'Environs' continues my interest in exploring the musical and structural implications of using recognisable sound sources. Indeed, the piece contains almost exclusively everyday sounds (the unidentifiable sounds being derived from the recognisable). I have used the sounds for their physical connotations as well as for their acoustic properties and musical potential. Thus creating different levels of meaning.

I have created different sound environments. Each environment having its own environs, or perimeter, defined by a door motif. Gradually these perimeters are broken down, as sounds occur in increasingly bizarre contexts. 

During this dialogue, sounds familiar to us are transformed into different material and from one source to another. Eventually even the opening and closing doors themselves are taken out of context and developed upon.  Further sections develop material to create longer sequences, exploiting the ambiguities which can occur when using recognisable sounds, out of context, along side each other.

'Environs' was composed between mid 1996 and early 1997 in the electroacoustic music studios at Bangor University. It is available on the ICMC98 CD (from the International Computer Music Association).

Rob Mackay is a composer, sound artist and performer. He gained a degree in Geology and Music at the University of Keele, studying composition there with Mike Vaughan, before going on to complete a Master’s and PhD with Andrew Lewis at the University of Wales, Bangor. Currently he is a Reader in Creative Music Technology at the University of Hull.

Recent projects have moved towards a cross-disciplinary approach, including theatre, audio/visual installation work, and human/computer interaction. Prizes and honours include: IMEB Bourges (1997 and 2001); EAR99 from Hungarian Radio (1999); Confluencias (2003); La Muse en Circuit (2004 and 2006). His work has received over 100 performances in 16 countries (including several performances on BBC Radio 3). Currently he is working with percussionist Evelyn Glennie on a composition project as part of Ruskin Rocks (http://www.leeds.ac.uk/ruskinrocks/).

He has held composer residencies at Slovak Radio (Bratislava), La Muse en Circuit (Paris), and the Tyrone Guthre Arts Centre (Ireland).

He is an improvisor working across many genres, and for several years played with the improvisation ensemble 'Imp'. He has also enjoyed improvising with Rhodri Davies and Jez Riley French. He has played, written and produced in a number of bands and ensembles, including the Welsh Hip-Hop collective 'Tystion' with whom he collaborated alongside John Cale on the film ‘A Beautiful Mistake’, as well as recording two John Peel sessions on BBC Radio 1 and supporting PJ Harvey. More recently, he has done session work for Gowel Owen and Euros Childs as well as playing in the Welsh Afrofunk outfit 'Drymbago'.

João Meireles is a portuguese flutist, working in Switzerland and abroad as a solo, orchestra and chamber musician. He received is "Master of Arts" diplom in 2013 from the Haute École de Musique de Genève in the class of Jacques Zoon.
Born in 1988 in Guimarães, north of Portugal, he received an early musical education and started playing the flute at age 10.
In 2000, he entered "Artave", recognized as one of the finest schools for young musicians in Portugal, where in 2006 he graduated with the highest honors. Following this period, at age 17, he moved to Freiburg i. Breisgau, Germany, to study with prof. Renate Greiss-Armin (former soloist of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra). He entered her flute class in 2007 in Karlsruhe, where he graduated as a Bachelor of Arts with honours in 2011. He moved then to Geneva, Switzerland, in order to work with prof. Jacques Zoon.
He colaborated with many orchestras such as the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Philharmonie der Nationen, Ensemble Contrechamps, Geneva Camerata, among others. He played under the baton of Emmanuel Krivine, Manfred Honeck, Kazuki Yamada, David Greilsammer, Illych Rivas and others.
As a soloist, he played many concerts in Germany, Portugal and Switzerland. In 2012, he was invited to play a solo recital at the commemorations of the European Capital of Culture Guimarães.  
He worked with eminent flutists such as Benoît Fromanger, Patrick Gallois, Barthold Kuyjken, Vicens Prats, etc. 


I am a composer based in Birmingham, UK. I have recently graduated from the University of Birmingham, specialising in the composition of Electroacoustic music. I am also interested in sound recording/engineering.

I'm a budding creative improving my crafts. I primarily post rotating selections of unfinished musical ideas I've created. I'm phasing out of using sample loops and moving towards original compositions. My style is leaning towards ambient, downtempo, and trip-hop with organic sounds.

I keep a lot of my pieces private until I feel more comfortable with them.

Fris first became known as a DJ supporting visiting US rap acts like Ice T, BDP, Cash Money & Marvellous, Sugar Bear, then as a musician with 90's dance bands & labels such as Flying, Luvdup & DMC. His multi instrumental & turntable skills have been used on many Film & TV productions & remix projects with artist like Dat Brass, Professor Elemental, Dr Syntax, The Nerve Agents, Wotupski & the Pitch Invaders.

Louise Rossiter is an acousmatic composer based in Leicester, UK. Her research interests lie in acousmatic music composition and performance, acoustic ecology, silence, and expectation. She recently completed a PhD at the Music, Technology and Innovation Research Centre, De Montfort University under the supervision of John Young and Simon Emmerson, having studied previously under Pete Stollery, Robert Dow and Robert Normandeau. 
Louise’s music has been performed and broadcast around the world. In 2012 Louise was awarded first prize in the prestigious concours d’interprétation spatialisée de L’espace du Sons in Brussels and in 2015, her work Tout Autour de la Montagne was awarded a mention in the Destellos International Composition Competition.
