Divide focuses on pain, loss, and self-destruction that arrives at self-awareness. It’s a harsh truth, made visual in his textured palette, throughout which the protagonist rides the wave through a pillow R&B lens.

It’s not just R&B here – or if it is, it’s a wholly refreshing take on the genre. Psych influence is rife in “Falling”, while lo-fi experimentalism rules “Try Me”. The whole EP grows progressively darker as it ensues, wrapping you up in a fascinating, cloying audial journey.

The second of three EP projects, Robin Myles’ latest offering Synergy is a dark and honest display of emotion, spread out across six sprawling tracks – each filled with a dense atmosphere of sound that centres his understated style. 

Birthed from the aftermath of Robin’s first EP Divide, a major success for the up-and-coming muso, Synergy immerses listeners in a forest of lulled piano chords, soft bass lines and distant echoes, pulled together by Robin’s soulful voice.

And it’s a voice full of longing and pain, tackling deeply personal issues of mental health, negligence, violence and an all-round global madness. 

“Tension” speaks of a failing generation that just keeps doing things wrong, while Rhye-like lullaby “Broken Piano” uses discords to comment on what it feels like to chase a dream that is unattainable. 

It’s easy to understand why Synergy feels so troubled – it was recorded and produced by Robin during SA’s numerous lockdowns, entirely on his own – however closing track “I Need Money”, taken straight from a quick jam session, is a jazzed-up remedy to all the despair that came before it, and seems a fittingly hopeful end to the project. 

And if Despair and Synergy are anything to go by, Robin’s upcoming third and final EP promises to be just as broodingly heartfelt.
