A Conversation With Virgil

A version of my generative music installation "A Lament For Mr Conway" that recently showed at QUAD in Derby... It's a desk that plays some music.

This version used Patter (http://playpatter.com/) to generate most of the notes and interactions between the parts. 

Virgil Patter

This project was a commission to write a soundtrack piece for a gallery installation where the visitor walks around a theatre set using an iPad to reveal hidden Augmented Reality scenes via an app. The set itself morphs between various film tropes including film noir, horror (evoking films like The Shining, The Thing, etc), action adventure and intrigue. This soundtrack tries to morph between these areas in a similar fashion, referencing music we're accustomed to in a new and - at times - slightly uncomfortable context.
The soundtrack was realised using traditional scoring, manipulated turntables playing 1930's jazz recordings, extensive sampling and time manipulation and synthesizers. Hope you enjoy it!

Glitched! The Quest for the Lost Maguffin - Installation Soundtrack

A little idea that came out of playing with Cycling74's excellent Pushpong (https://cycling74.com/project/push-pong/#.WLBY0BicZE5) music sequencer in Max for Live. I wanted to experiment with something that didn't have much melody and was mainly based around generative sub-bass events. I then layered some little sound experiments over the top, and consciously tried to steer clear of anything particularly 'musical' in terms of structure or melody. Instead letting the harmonic stuff dictate the feel of the overall piece. In the end it's sort of a hymn to night time walks through cold cities and unease in the darkness.
