Star Fox - Corneria (TurboGrafx-16/PC-Engine Chiptune Cover) [No Samples]

So this song was my attempt to utilize a groove beat in an original since I hadn't actually done that in quite some time. I originally wanted to create something with a much more sad, almost droning tone, but it kind of naturally evolved into something more lively (though still pretty somber). Kinda gave me the vibe of a rainy city at night, lit up by neon signs with almost no one on the streets. Very noir-ish.

The idea was "Helvetica as a pokemon trainer". I grew up on Pokemon Fire Red, & one of the most memorable themes for me was the gym leader battle theme. 
The powerful bells & driving melody is something I haven't heard in a Pokemon game in a long time, so I wanted to grab that nostalgia & just stick it right in, with a focus on Hel's pre-existing leitmotif. You can really hear the inspiration without even needing to listen!

I made this project from memory. Can't remember if I got the number of notes for the chords correct, but I do know that I got the chords themselves right. Which is good, considering I usually can't remember them for shit past the uppermost line. I kept correcting and re-correcting what is now the second-highest line, not knowing that there was actually three until I opened the original (by which I planned to grade myself) :phoenixwright-mybad:

I also forgot that there was a Hi-Hat in the original, somehow, but I was thinking it sounded a little empty... anyways. In other news, I'm really fucking proud of that Wario sprite. I probably spent more time on that than the actual project.

Johto Gym Leader (Remix)

The layeredness of the celesta/harp in this song reminded me of the way Beginning of the Journey utilizes its channels, which made me think of the MIDI for this song some guy on VGMusic made a number of years ago.
Making the Channel Volume events work properly by moving over to FL 20 during the final stage turned out to not be worth it, 'cause shit kept cutting out even though I was using less than 8 voices. YES, that's right, this track caps out at SEVEN voices, meaning there'd be a whole channel left for sound effects! It's something I noticed when working with EB and later LttP, but this is the first time I've ever made sure that 7 was the cap.
But yeah, anyway, I ended up making copies of the Strings and Choir in c700, and giving them Attack values of 2, since that's really all the volume envelopes were for to begin with.
