NET LIKE KOBE

'Remembering Bells' was composed following a series of workshops from the International School of Music Finland exploring traditional Arabic music. The piece applies ideas from the Arabic maqam system, in particular building modes from small scalic fragments and jins modulation techniques. The piece is entirely aleatoric, with a focus on the interactions between the performers, who take cues from each other and judge when it is best to move through the material. In this piece I also wanted to explore personal feelings of anxiety, both recent and historical. The cyclic nature of anxious thinking is important on a micro and marco level, with lines and gestures often returning to their starting point and the guitar returning to its original gesture at the end of the piece.

This piece was composed for and is dedicated to the Aulus Duo.

From Menton to Toulon (Song-Art)

In 2021, the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ finalists consisted of Rose Aisling-Ellis (a deaf woman), John Whaite (an openly gay man) and AJ Odudu (a working class, black woman). Acknowledging the significance of one of the UK’s biggest television events of the year featuring such a diverse group, Whaite posted a photo himself and his dance partner Johannes Radebe in their show dance, surrounded by confett􀄴i, stating that ‘What started life as an entertainment show has this year provided solace for so many outcasts.’. This image and statement inspired me to compose a new work that explored
and celebrated the beauty of difference and diversity in our world.

Confett􀄴i for the Outcasts is a synthesis of ideas from my own training
as a western classical music and Javanese gamelan player with instruments and elements from the Japanese gagaku tradition. Each of the instruments in the ensemble have a unique method of sound production, leading to distinct voices and timbral colours in the piece. The musical material of the piece is based around four small motifs that each of the instruments explore through melodic and/or harmonic expressions. Elaboration on the melodic materials
found in the ryūteki, hichiriki and cello is key to these expressions, helping to develop the motifs organically through each performer’s unique voice. Microtonal inflections around particular pitch classes are used to expand the harmonic language of the music. Of particular interest to me whilst composing this piece was the microtonal embellishments used between the ryūteki and hichiriki in gagaku music, where the hichiriki will slide to its pitch an octave lower than the stable ryūteki note, resulting in the first harmonic of the hichiriki beating against the fundamental of the ryūteki. This effect is key to Confe􀄴i for the Outccasts, being seen frequently between the ryūteki, hichiriki and cello.

Cryogenesis

The world première of 'Castle in the Sky' by Robin Fiedler on 1st December 2023 at Regent Hall, London. This is performed by the joint forces of the Camden Youth Brass Band and Regent Brass, conducted by Alan Duguid.

Programme Note: 

Castle in the Sky was written for Regent Brass and Camden Brass Band
for Adopt a Music Creator 2023, using materials from two workshops led
with the bands within the Scheme. Thinking of brass band as a medium,
I wanted to paint the image of something heavy and somewhat imposing,
yet floating and moving flexibly. I associate brass instruments with having
found (or returned to) one’s core as a person and being able to act
and engage with life from a grounded place. The castle, in its role as
the base and centre of a ruling force or entity, is meant as a metaphor for
this core, but it needs to defy gravity and float in order to remain flexible
and open as we grow and go through life. Within the workshops, Regent
Brass was set a task to improvise around images of extraordinary,
alien-looking animals, whereas Camden Brass were imagining themselves
to be superheroes, composing their own theme tunes. Castle in the Sky
means to be an affirming synthesis and representative of the belief that
as people, somewhere between dreaming big and embracing our quirks
and strangenesses, we can become something that defies anything that
