Love Is Strange

“Tome of Stars” is a 100 sonnet journey, equal parts art, therapy journal, and exorcism, both a celebration and an elegy, a single narrative arc tracing the birth and death of a relationship. The opening section of “Tome of Stars”, titled “Item 1: Anthesis”, comprises 21 poems that chronicle the emergence and flowering of a romantic relationship, structured around the botanical metaphor of anthesis, the period during which a flower blooms.

“Vox Animi” centers on the voice of the beloved as both a literal phenomenon and a symbolic embodiment of her spiritual and creative identity. The poem elevates her vocal expression to divine and cosmic dimensions, where it goes beyond aesthetic perfection to a generative force within the universe, capable of silencing gods and stirring stars. Despite the metaphysical scope, the sonnet grounds this grandeur in a tangible, intimate detail. It is her speech, murmur, and whisper that holds and expresses the soul (“animi”) alluded to in the title.

The Stargirl’s names in music can’t be told;
A trillion dialects cannot keep pace.
Her compositions, restless spirits hold,
And resonate through minds in matchless grace.

Of all her gifts, her voice is purest art;

My grandmother was born in Mecklenburg around 1900. She raised five children, had ten grandchildren, and was always gentle and kind. She was always my safe haven when I had worries and problems. ...and there was always tea and cake.

Sugar cracks, and milk clouds form,
While outside drifts the northern storm.
