When is loose, too loose? I decided to keep as much of that funky ass looseness as possible with this edit, resisting the urge to beef things up, while keeping it fresh for today's dancefloors. That bass!!

Spoonie Gee (born Gabriel Jackson) is one of the earliest rap artists, and one of the few rap artists to release records in the 1970s. He has been credited with originating the term hip hop and some of the themes in his music were precursors of gangsta rap.

Jackson was born in Harlem, New York City first recording came about after Peter Brown visited Robinson's record store and mentioned that he was looking to make a rap record.[3] 

Spoonie's name was suggested, and he recorded "Spoonin' Rap", which was released on Brown's Sound Of New York, USA imprint, featuring a lyric that included jailhouse references that would later become common in Gangsta rap, and with echo applied to vocals in a similar way to many Jamaican deejay records.[4] Spoonie Gee has been described as "the original gangster rapper".[5][6]


He then recorded for Robinson's Enjoy! Records, his first release for the label being the similarly minimalistic "Love Rap" (on which he was accompanied on Congas by his brother Pooche Costello), issued on the B-side of the Treacherous Three's "New Rap Language" (on which he also featured), leading to his early nickname of 'The Love Rapper'.[1][4] 

Jackson was a founding member of the Treacherous Three, along with L.A. Sunshine and Kool Moe Dee. The group added Special K as a member when Jackson left to record his first single. The group was named Spoonie Gee and the Treacherous Three when Jackson returned for a period before going solo.[7]


He left Enjoy! and moved to Sugarhill Records, where he enjoyed further hits with "Spoonie's Back" and the collaboration with The Sequence on "Monster Jam".[1][4] 


He moved on again to Aaron Fuchs' Tuff City label, on which the majority of his later output was issued, including "That's My Style", on which he attacked Schoolly D for copying his style.[2] By the mid-1980s, he was also working in a rehabilitation centre for people with learning disabilities.[1][3] 

His career took off once again in 1987 with his debut album, The Godfather of Rap, produced by Marley Marl and Teddy Riley, and issued on the Tuff City label.[1] His career has since been hampered by several spells in prison.[2]

Amsterdam dwelling editor par excellence Em Vee took the solo reigns on the inaugural Lumberjacks In Hell - and truly excelled with a great reimagination of "Miss You". The second release on the label sees the German share duties with Spanish edit demon Rayko, with the Rare Wiri boss hogging the A Side. First up is an expert rearrangement of Candi Staton's cover of the Bee Gee's standard "Nights On Broadway" which strips the track of its orchestral leanings to focus on the groove! Following this is a meaty take on a classic, with Barbara Keith's cover of "All Along The Watchtower" reinforced with some bottom end bump. Em Vee spreads a special disco version of Alma Lee's late 70s Philly delight "Gimme Your Love" with an extended intro that fully displays his edit talents.

Luv N’Haight presents Lost Soul; a comprehensive collection of material recorded by Geater Davis for the House Of Orange label. The name of the album is an accurate description of the life and career of the legendary blues and soul singer who passed away at age 38 while on the verge of breaking through.

Geater Davis’ career began in Texas but with the success of a few regional hits he was able to go to Shreveport and all throughout the South. He was always on the move looking for a better chance, keeping his career alive and the “big break” so many artists look for. Just weeks after moving to Dallas he suffered a heart attack and a few weeks later died from heart failure on the day he was supposed to record a session. Although he didn’t find the success he sought while he was alive, his legacy is secure as one of the finest blues-soul singers of the 1970’s.

Geater Davis : My Love Is So Strong For You

The first time I heard Sivuca's amazing version of "Ain't No Sunshine" was around '89; acid house was all the rage and, quite frankly, pissing me off a little bit, so we decided to organise a rave of our own. One where you could hear all sorts of sounds. Case in point, the DJ dropped the Sivuca bomb at about six in the morning, the sweat was crawling up the walls and people started peeling off their shirts. It just blew everyone's minds. Then the police turned up. Luckily though, it was just some coppers coming off the night-shift and wanting a beer so we let them in and carried on. 

But I never forgot that moment and recently I decided that I really wanted to do a tribute to that great man and his band, of which this was the result.   

This is track A1 of a 12" vinyl-only release out on Kat Records.

One of London’s original warehouse party DJ's and co  promoter of the infamous Dirt Box parties of the 1980's.
From Club Promoter, Club DJ, Radio DJ, Record Producer to Record Label Manager. 
As a DJ he has the experience, the passion and the ability to make a dance floor rock or a DJ that can play the coolest funkiest soulful house for those select intimate sessions and even a mind blowing rare groove funk and soul set - Rob Milton is one DJ that will definitely deliver the goods!
With a DJ career that spans over two decades Rob’s DJ pedigree dates back to the Eighties in London where he was the co founder/promoter and original DJ of the infamous and notorious DIRT BOX
which produced London’s first illegal warehouse parties. Which paved the way for the capital’s forthcoming rave scene.
Rob’s popularity as a DJ also saw him with residencies at some of London’s top clubs at the time such as Oliver Peyton’s RAW with Dave Dorrell and the Electric Ballroom in Camden alongside Jay Strongman. He was also a regular at Philip Salons Mud Club and the Wag Club. As well as resident DJ at some of London’s biggest and hippest clubs and one off events around the UK. Rubbing shoulders and turntables with some of the biggest and now legendary DJ names.
Rob left the UK in 1988 to set up home in Sydney Australia. On arrival in Sydney he was responsible for setting up the omni present LOVE parties with Sugar Ray, which pioneered the huge Sydney house scene in the early Nineties. And was resident at the world-renowned Vibes on a Summers Day and Sydney’s freshest funkiest parties at the time Funk Inc.
Over the years Rob has played at most major Sydney and Australian clubs and bars and was co-promoter and resident DJ of Sydney’s infamous Kings Cross club the Underground Café. The late lamented HIGH TIMES & DELICIOUS nights were two of the most popular club nights in Sydney’s clubbing history. They were the epitome of all that was good about the house scene - no hype, no bulls**t , just pure sexy house! Both nights ran for an incredible seven years from 1995-2002 and were constantly voted in the top three club nights in Sydney, with Rob being touted as one of the best “funky” house DJs in Australia. And the club was one of
the first to book international DJs on a regular basis. With some of the UK and US top DJs playing virtually every other week. After the closure of the Underground Rob took up resident DJ slots at Home and Yu as well as guest spots at clubs all over town. And was a regular on Sydney’s airwaves – hosting his own daily Mon-Fri afternoon shows on Radio Dex and Rhythm FM.
He then immersed himself into music production releasing two of Australia’s biggest house tracks- the anthemic (and still much sort after) “Same Old Thing” by LOVERUSH (voted Australian dance track of the year by 3D magazine) and the excellent follow up “Love 2 See Ya (Dancin’)”. Both tracks were picked up for release in the UK on Credence and Azuli records respectively.
Rob was also responsible for putting together the essential “GROOVE ORIGINALS” compilation series. Which consisted of those original soul/funk and disco tunes that were being sampled for today’s dance tracks. Which was a formula that preceded the huge influx of similar compilations from around the world.
Recently Rob has been taking more time out in the studio to record an album and various single projects. With notable releases like “Keep it Right There” by ULTRAPHONIC on Sydney’s prolific Hussle label and ‘All Over Me” by Body Corporate on Casa Del Disco which encompass all the essential ingredients that makes you wanna dance your ass off – which is all together an apt description of his DJ sets. Rob has recently returned to his adopted Sydney Australia after four years back in his hometown London. He is currently working hard in the studio on remixes and his own new productions and re-edits for his new label Spin Cycle. Watch out for DJ sets around Sydney in the coming months.
