For over 30 years, the world-renowned Burning Man Arts Festival in Gerlach, Nevada has always been a harbinger of the future — and a ritual that reverberates around the world. 

For this ritual to happen, in this inflection point in history and to show the world, and remind us, that We the People can do a pretty good job of taking care of ourselves - It had to change! (In fact by law..)

To discourage the renegade burn from happening, the US Government made everything about Burning Man temporarily illegal (with fines up to 12 months in prison..) including all services like water trucks, ice delivery, gray water pumping and porta potty pumping.

No big art or camp structures.
No lasers or massive sound stages (except Robot Heart).
No Instagram celebrities and Hollywood A-listers
No riot of lasers during the sheer overwhelming madness of “burn night.”
In fact, no burning of anything larger than a campfire.

So the people started a new city, three miles away - losing the airport and the plug and plays: Plan B.

There were no landmarks no entrance or ticket line.
There was no “Welcome to Burning Man” sign this year. 
But it felt like home.

And it was done, all so elegantly, so kindly, so politely, so playfully, and within the rules and laws, that our obedience was in itself an act of civil disobedience. 

Free, diverse, inclusive and ecologically sustainable, the People’s Burn “redefined fire.”:

Weapons of war were transformed into a peaceful ritual. The primal spectacle of past “burns” was replaced with a playful humility and heart to symbolically “burn” a “man” figure. 

The aerial light show symbolized the dissolution of the old ways. It was produced by Studio Drift of Amsterdam, live-streamed simultaneously on Twitch and YouTube, and came as a spontaneous and unscheduled surprise.

The lesson? 
When we bring everything back to human scale, the people become the art.
Giving feels better than taking.
Participation is always more fun than being a spectator.
I think there are so many lessons in this for us as a culture, on Earth, about ways to make life more sustainable and less resource intensive and still have fun.

Remember, it’s a ritual that depends foremost on people trusting their own hearts and intuition, rejecting fear, and uniting with fellow courageous and creative souls in like-minded vibe tribes to build what they truly desire.

The Renegade Burn rebirthed the spectacle with something we all need a lot more right now: 

LOVE.

Golden Hour

Which date could be better to release a fundraiser set I’ve played for my Mexican Mayan Warrior fam than the week where we would normally stroll over the playa in Nevada. I can tell I miss it a lot and can’t wait to return next year properly. 
This set got recorded a month ago in NYC with the full art car at the Brooklyn Mirage. It was a hot and rainy summer night, with a pretty magical vibe and so spectacular with all the lasers & fire. We had a little blackout at the end caused by the heavy rain which soaked all of us and of course the equipment too but this made it even more special.

Hernan Cattaneo - Burning Man Multiverse-  2021

I am so grateful to Robot Heart for inviting me to perform this set which was without doubt one of the most memorable experiences of my life. 

A few years ago, I was dancing as the sun rose over Robot Heart in total wonderment, in a state of total inspiration. During lockdown I recalled that feeling and got to work on two albums, Yin, a classical record and Yang an electronic one. 

Writing these two albums was my therapy during the pandemic, dreaming of a day I could connect with people again on the Playa. It’s just so wild, that the fantasy came true in the best way possible and I got to perform this set, transitioning from Yin to Yang with a special arrangement for the Robot Heart Sunset, opening with about 20 minutes of piano and sound bowls before the electronic beats kick in. 

In order to play the piano live here, I had my beloved Steinway sampled into a virtual instrument and it was a real thrill to be able to play with that sound on the playa!

Yin and Yang were recorded in 432 Hz tuning and are musical expressions of my musings about life, the universe and infinite consciousness. 

I’ve always been fascinated by this quote by William Blake, and it was ringing through my mind the whole of the Freeburn week, and especially during this performance. 

He wrote: “If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern.” 

The view from atop the Robot Heart bus warmed my heart, the doors of perception were being cleansed by the beautiful souls in front of me, and I am infinitely grateful. 🙏🏽

Reza Safinia - Robot Heart - Free Burn 2021

This year's free/renegade burn unfolded itself most unexpectedly. 
14 days before the burn, I received an invite from Amsterdam to support a friend's art project with my music. Everything which followed felt like a streak of kind gestures from the universe. 

This art project by Studio Drift brought two hundred drones to the playa to fly a series of magical art pieces in the black rock city sky.  

A tribute for all hearts who have burned in this place. ⁣⁣⁣A gift for the burning man culture and an homage to previous artists who united this beautiful community.  ⁣

To everyone who made this trip and experience possible, thank you. I have no words. The same goes for all those who came to listen. 

All the beautiful burners who showered me with love, support, food, and gifts all week, realize you are part of this recording. 

I am sending my endless love to the Studio Drift  & Robot Heart families for this opportunity to co-create. Without words of how you gift in such a selfless manner. ⁣⁣

Unders - Robot Heart - Free Burn 2021

The “FreeBurn” was so needed! To celebrate life - we needed to reflect, dance, laugh, cry, and let go - in the place we call home. 

I was a bit nervous playing music this year - I had not DJ'd on the bus for four years after parking myself on “a bench” because of hearing issues. So when I found out I was going to play a small “opening of the bus” set I was stoked to get reacquainted before my scheduled Friday sunrise set. I started with my favorite chill track at the moment. The rest were selected because they gave me a dusty vibe, and I wanted to hear them on the bus system. Some were given to me by close friends - So it was a dusty family affair of sorts. The last track of that set has the vocal “Fade out again” - those lyrics gave me the idea to fade the set into my sunrise set. It was unplanned that these two sets would live together. Or even work together - I only planned my bus opening track and my sunrise moment. 

This leads me to my sunrise set. Where to begin? - how to honor Geo - celebrate the sun - tip my hat to the night - take the crowd on a bit of a journey - share sounds that speak to me - spread some love. I knew I wanted to have a special moment for Geo, but it did not hit me until I was on the plane headed out west. It was sunset and the sun was hitting my eyes through the plane window - and that was the moment it clicked. I was lucky to have WiFi on the pane and searched on all our group chats for a sound bite of Geo that would make sense with the track I had in mind. It took me a few hours, but I found a video with one. It was perfect - very subtle and very Geo. I did a quick edit in Ableton and thought WOW indeed. Big thank you to Brian Cid for taking the edit to the next level and to Jean for delivering the track to me before my set. 

We designed a Geo tattoo this year - I placed one on each forearm - facing opposite directions a few hours before I was to play. Energy in, energy out - That was my “mantra” for my set. I could feel so much love around me, in front of me, and above me in the heart - then the Drone show appeared and blew my mind. Thank you Studio Drift for the beautifully concepted and executed tribute.  

It was hard to judge the sun this year -  as there was so much smoke, but in the end, all was perfect. Feeling all the emotions, I just looked directly at the sun and had a little chat with Geo, expressed gratitude and shed some tears of my own. 

One of my favorite all time sunrise Djs was to play after me - it was surreal. Looking back now, I can see Lee Burridge showing up at sunset and surprising us all was part of Geo’s doing. Geo always called me Dilly Dill. So to have a DillLeeDill morning still has me smiling. Ironically this was the ten year mark where Lee and I first truly connected on the bus with a random morning 5 hour b2b set that started our friendship :) 

Lee had to leave early and there was only going to be an hour left till we were originally scheduled to close the morning. We had asked Holmar if he wanted to play the next day after Diplo (so he could have a long set) and I would just go back on after Lee. Somehow this one hour turned into almost three hours. And I was playing music from folders that were dusty themselves. This set is a whole other story!

John Dill - Robot Heart - Free Burn 2021

We understand a set as a journey into the unknown. To enjoy this journey you need time, that is why we came to the conclusion of only doing extended sets of at least 3h from now on. This year I will play fewer times, but longer, and if they are all like one of the last sets I played in 2021, we will all enjoy it very much. More than 6 hours, starting at 10:30 AM, after an early morning of Meditation and Yoga in Barbarenas, an eco paradise in southern Mexico. Many things happened this day, you can hear it for yourself. This is the “Story of my life”

There was no need to push the vibe, no need to push the tempo, we could all just be together and feel...

On a beautiful but cold April day, Hekske (the little witch) did her usual inspection round of the forest in the company of Falke (the 9-year old witch apprentice). She was very happy that the dark energy (which was present in one small section of the forest) had completely dissolved since a group of badgers settled in the middle of that area 3,5 years ago. She really loved these lively animals, who never seemed to get tired of their endless digging of tunnels and chambers and keeping their den (or sett) clean and tidy. And the girl was really reassured as the tiny oak tree (which she planted 4 years earlier and was destined to live for 1000 years and become a mother tree in a distant future) was growing safely right in the middle of the badger’s sett.  And the ever friendly and ebullient badgers had even dug a pond for Lalita, the nymph who had come all the way from South-East Asia to fulfil her life-long mission to protect this little tree.
When the witches approached the badgers’ territory, they were welcomed by Lalita while the guard badger saluted them and blew his whistle - which was the sign for all his clan members to converge around the girls. The elder badger took the word and explained that they had done a complete overhaul of their sett and that the witches may be interested in the result.  Traditionally, digging tunnels has always been a task of the male badgers, but – after drawing a yantra around the little tree last week – the female badgers sensed that something was missing.  The network of tunnels looked like an impenetrable fortress, but there was a deeper spiritual dimension lacking.  So the females started to dig spontaneously, just following their intuition.  And now we’re inviting you to come and have a look…
The girls were very excited to go inside the badger’s den, which is a very rare honor.  Hekske uttered a reduction spell, so that the 3 girls were small enough to enter the realm of the badgers.  Actually, Falke had even never been inside the sett and was very eager to have a look.  Along the way, Hekske lit up countless floating sparks, creating a spellbinding atmosphere in the dark tunnels.  After a while, they arrived at a junction.  When looking into the newly dug tunnel, they saw pink roots hanging down from the ceiling.  These were the roots of the future mother tree.  The witches were amazed to see how far the roots extended, up to 30 meters away from the little oak tree, which is still only 3 feet tall.  The youngest female badger explained that they had dug 11 concentric circles.  Hekske immediately remembered that the forest animals had arranged themselves automatically in 11 concentric circles, when she planted the little oak tree 4 years ago (see Witchtape #22).  And when the witches walked through these concentric tunnels, the pink roots lighted up and started to emit a heartbeat… the beating heart of the forest…

We meet with unusual events this year, be it a haze in winter, or more like a late snowfall in spring. We are so happy to host our next mixtape by our dear friend Mattmosphere.

In the past we know Matt for his special sound and way of playing music. Based mainly on ambient and experimental atmospheres. Today he has given us an extraordinary set that represents the sound that is usually directed towards clubs and dancefloors, perhaps as a celebration of having them back after a long wait. Us being big fans of minimal and house, could not feel a better fit.

Guy Laliberté - Robot Heart - Free Burn 2021

I'd be lying if I said it was easy to play a sunsrise set at burning man... especially at robot heart.  I had to literally help pull an ancient cow statue down from the top of the heart two years ago to be sent to Germany.  It's like I had to do these ancient quests and other sunset sets to be put in the position to play this past burn, so i was not taking that lightly.  By sheer coincidence I found myself in Reno the night before this and drove straight from my set there to the middle of the desert to a gps location at 5:30 in the morning.  I prepared myself for the sunrise; I knew there would be some doubters, but that just made me work harder... oh and I was on acid.  I think it may have been the best dj set of my life so far ..
