This was year number 12 for Opulent Temple.  Through the years of helping organize OT, it's still a major motivator to have that defining playa music moment.  This year it was Wednesday night at our annual Sacred Dance party.  Of course I wanted to play to the moment, of music that I was passionate about while being conscious to set up Rob Garza from Thievery properly, who was on after me.  That endeavor ended up with this set, which I think is a stand out of my BM sets for it's range of music and emotion.  Never wanting to be pigeonholed and mostly having a disregard for if a tune was old or new, I ended up with a couple classic Alex Metric tunes, some Elite Force revamps that had 'playa tune' written all over them, some unreleased tracks from Lot 49 and Lee Coombs, some bassline techno and moving into the nudisco ala' Croatia Squad, etc I've been playing the shit out of lately cause it's music I love right now seemed a good note to leave it off for Rob Garza.

Hope you enjoy and it takes you back to some playa magic with a packed and beautiful crowd, jellyfish floating through the masses, an aerialist performing high on a forklift, dancers on the stage, and all the unique sights and feelings of OT in top form in the desert.

The hypnotic momentum of the night passes to the hands of DJ Three as light begins to fill sky and the new day creeps ever closer.  For forty breathless minutes we wait… until at last the sun breaks over the horizon, and a collage of verbal musings, psychedelia and ornate music fills the air.  Toying with echoes and teasing with nuance, shutters fluttering to capture the fleeting moment…a moment not soon forgotten for those who were lucky enough to be there, at sunrise on Sunday, Black Rock City, Burning Man, 2014.   And then, just as easily as we are led into that place, a whole movement of sound and energy returns the dance floor.

" For the second year in a row, I had the honour of playing during the burn on the Warrior´s closing night... both times sharing the decks with a good friend, last year with Superpitcher as Pachanga Boys, this year with Barnt, who I convinced to come because his music fits so well to the place and situation… originally we wanted to have some back-to-back moments and some solo parts but we got so into it that we stuck together until the end for an almost twelve hour set… Such an experience… from the ritualesque drums to watching the man go up in flames until the sunrise, going through different peaks during the night with all this great people dancing between neon, lasers, fire and metal machines… it was so great to be part of this!! Thanks a lot to the Mayan Warrior crew, and thanks to all the warriors who were there…"

With little time to settle at our camp, we can't set up our newly purchased bikes. So we venture out in search of Robot Heart by foot. Arriving onto the playa for the first time at night is incredibly intense, the place is so vast. The lights, sounds and atmosphere is other worldly. It's distracting, let alone the fact we need to somehow find Robot Heart by foot in amongst all of this brilliant and mesmerising noise. We start walking in any direction, Sarah being an experienced burner knew full well the bus could be out deep in the desert far away. We ask people if they have seen it. Mixed answers get us nowhere. Scanning the horizon for anything that resembles a heart. So many things look similar. Somehow my eyesight pays off and the saving grace was the giant Robot held up high. Finally arriving and panic over we run straight into Phillipp from M.A.N.D.Y. With some time to spare before I play he asks us if we want to go for a quick cruise around to explore. With the obvious lack of our bikes he purposefully and very quickly introduces us to Benjamin and the crew from Robot Heart, who throw us both on the bus immediately. To our surprise the bus suddenly starts driving away. Everyone follows. An amazing experience as we watch thousands of bikes, lights and art cars slowly following the bus. It was like the bus was leaking - spewing out these bikes, lights and art cars all over the desert floor, leaving this incredible trail behind itself.
A good 30 minutes pass, the bus and gathered crowd is settled and in its final place for the night. I begin to play - my first gig at Burning Man, my first time on Robot Heart, all on my first night at BM in this crazy desert. All brilliantly overwhelming. Even after everything though, I am completely relaxed. It's a setting and experience I'll never forget. Playing and looking out over everything down below. You could take a picture of what you see in front of you and look at all of the different things for hours. But this was real life and in motion, always changing, so much to take in. By far one of the most enjoyable moments of my life. Which was topped only by mine and Sarah's fun wedding ceremony we had later that week in front of the Temple. The picture is our first kiss as newly weds!

Thank you Robot Heart and Burning Man! I definitely hope I can return to the Bus and the playa every year now!

Tim Green - Robot Heart - Burning Man 2014

I am so lucky to be able to celebrate my birthday on the bus each year, and I get to share these moments with the people I love.

On this special day when I am supposed to get older, instead… I feel younger.  Whoever has been in a desert before knows what energy and pureness lives in it, and what you as a person can gain from it.

On the Playa there is the possibility to be who you really are, and to give what you really have. This could mean you or something that is important to you.

I decided not to take any pictures this year, to see the place through my eyes and not a camera.  And every moment and every breath, got inside my soul. I was really careful not waste any of it. 

I want to thank all the people who were there to make this day such a special one for me.

Thank you Robot Heart for having me again and supporting our music with all your hard work.

Francesca Lombardo - Robot Heart - Burning Man 2014

Sunrise is my favorite way to describe the magic of Burning Man.

There are 365 sunrises each year, and most of us consider it a privilege to sleep through them. But during one week at Burning Man the attendance of sunrise is a must. In the desert, as a collective, we make things that are otherwise ordinary occurrences into sacred spectacles. We make costumes for the sunrise, we compose music for it, and we go through death-defying stunts to take incredible pictures of it. And so it goes with many things at Burning Man; things that we take for granted in the real world are treated differently on the playa. It is not just the rising of the sun that we elevate to mythical proportions, but human traits like kindness, patience, uncertainty and flexibility are also celebrated, tested and recharged in Black Rock City.

Through audio and video captures, these extraordinary treatments of ordinary things stand a chance to be implemented in the outside world, not just for those who were there, but also to people who never traveled to Burning Man, and who - through these captures - are reminded that certain basic things in life can hold more value if we so choose. With every unusually nice thing that someone did or said to us at Burning Man, with every unprovoked smile we received from strangers in its dust storms, we will be charged and challenged to pay that spirit forward the other 51 weeks of the year.  And every morning, the sun will faithfully show its face to remind us of this opportunity.  

So, the next time we need to set our alarm clocks because real life responsibilities demand us to be awake before dawn, let’s choose to be grateful for witnessing the sun peek over the horizon or through our concrete jungles, while most other people are sleeping through it, and let’s remember that we are ambassadors of that magical place that celebrates the beauty in ordinary things. 

Today is a good day to be awake!

Being given the honour of playing the penultimate set and the last sunrise of the Burning Man on Monday morning after temple burn was one of the most magical gigs of my 26 years behind the decks…. after a truly astounding week, where by this point complete manifestation of all things desired appeared within 10 minutes of thinking about them - ending 2014's Burn in this way and sharing all the love I have to give musically with tracks from 1988 all the way into the unreleased files of the future - this gig was the stuff dreams are made of…. Until we meet again
