In the sultry haze of 1980, as disco was gasping its final breaths in America, something different was emerging in the UK underground — a kind of raw, funk-infused resilience. Mirage, a lesser-known but deeply resonant band, carved out one of those moments with “Summer Grooves.” Released under Flamingo Records, the track didn’t make waves in the mainstream — but that wasn’t the point. It was a signal, a pulse, from the heart of what would later be recognized as Brit funk: a working-class response to slick American R&B, with all the imperfections and urgency that made it real.
“Summer Grooves” doesn’t just play; it radiates — equal parts sweat and sunlight, groove and grit. The song became a cult relic, unearthed and revived decades later by selectors like Joey Negro in compilations like Backstreet Brit Funk, not out of nostalgia, but because certain sounds don’t age — they echo.
In a scene where many tracks faded into obscurity, this one stayed — sampled, remembered, and spun again by those who knew where the soul lived.
