The Story "An Alien Gift to Mankind":

It began in the distant past, as an advanced alien species initiated mass production of a special breed of cybernetic android. Once activated, the androids would travel separately across many galaxies, probing planets for crucial data, and exploring endlessly for intelligent life. After eons of searching, one finally discovered an intelligent life-form, known as man. Immediately transforming its probe into a communications satellite, the robot DJ established an orbit near the humanoid planet. The silence of space was suddenly broken, as an unexpected event occurred that would forever be known, by both man and alien, as... 

The Robot DJ's broadcast Electronic Music Therapy across healing radio frequencies, combining tranquilizing electronic vibrations, dynamic stereophonic effects, and alien messages of peace transmitted below the threshold of conscious perception.

What is Machine Love? A theoretical concept in which feelings can only be expressed by an artificial human being when combining subliminal messages within music, stimulating the brainwaves of the listener, and therein psychologically producing a positive emotional response.

Summer 2013 will see the release of Behind, a brand new album by youAND:THEMACHINES aka Martin Müller - one half of youANDme - on the Ornaments imprint. As youANDME the pair have seen plenty of success with releases on labels like Cocoon, Rekids and Deeplabs. Their last mix-cd was hailed as one of the best of the year by DE:BUG and between them they have officially remixed influential artists like Moodymann, Seth Troxler, Radio Slave or Lawrence.

As is usually the case for this vinyl-loving outfit, the Behind album has a limited to 333 copies hand-painted cover edition with unique artwork and a stamped number, and features vocal collaborations with seminal artists like Robert Owens, Brothers' Vibe, Delhia de France, Bajka and Keter Darker as well as instrumental contributions from Olga Kholodnaia who plays strings, Martin Kohlstedt who plays Rhodes and e-piano and solina strings from The Analog Roland Orchestra man, Michal Matlak.

Behind is Martin's long player debut on Ornaments and is an album that brings together his wide array of influences -- dub techno, ambient, Detroit techno, house, but also encompasses plenty of analogue hardware, field recordings and hidden messages. The aim when writing the album was to use no samples and instead craft every sound himself.

Some of the equipment used through the album to lend it such a unique sonic signature includes Waldorf Microwave, Moog Voyager, Roland TR909, 808, 707, Alpha Juno and some MFB drumboxes amongst others. "The aim was to take these old instruments and combine them with modern techniques from 2013," says Martin. "I wanted to make music that doesn't loose the old spirit of yesteryear."

The results make for an album that doesn't follow trends but instead comes from deep inside the mind of the producer who made it. Inspired and influenced by more than 15 years of listening to electronic music, it is a truly cross genre work.

From the grainy dubwise ambiance of opener "Entrance" to the deep and lush techno of "Perception" and on through more intense and sinewy cuts like "Domain Specific" and the blissful, beatless, string laced excursion that is this is "Desire", this is a record with lots of narrative; an album that really takes you somewhere. plenty of extra character also comes from the respective collaborators who each have their own distinctive voices, making Behind a truly captivating work of art.

What is brainwave entrainment? ​The process of using sound to synchronize brainwaves to induce the brain into a specific desired brainwave frequency. This results in a variety of neurological therapeutic benefits. When a person listens to a sound set to a specific frequency, after a few minutes the brain will begin to synchronize with that frequency. This is known as Frequency Following Response (or FFR). Using this phenomenon, it is possible to induce the human brain into all manners of desired frequencies, to achieve specific results. For example, when the brainwave synchronizes with a sound set to the frequency of 2hz, it will induce sleep.

Essentially, what happens during this type of therapy is that a different tone is played in each ear – each has a slightly different frequency. Our brains mix these two sounds together and create a single sound. When we do this, we trigger specific brain waves. Depending on the frequency, the production of these brainwaves creates different feelings. In this track, theta 4hz to 8hz frequencies are added. They are the frequencies your brain are tuned in to during dreaming, meditating and in trance-like states. Most people use binaural beats for one or more of three purposes: meditation, spiritual awakening, or tuning their chakras.

The human ear is incapable of hearing frequencies as low as those necessary for brainwave entrainment. This is where binaural beats come in; two frequencies are generated, one sent to each ear. For example one ear receives a signal of 100hz whilst the other ear receives 105hz. The brain cancels out the difference between the frequencies, in this case 105hz - 100hz = 5hz. 5hz is a low level theta frequency. Binaural beats are the most common form of brainwave entrainment, but they are by no means the most powerful. This is why its important for us to encode our electronic music therapy tracks with a variety of forms of entrainment technology, explained below.

Isochronic Tones - are formed in a very different way than binaural beats. Isochronic tones work by modulating the volume of a tone. This tone then becomes a rhythmic pulse, capable of inducing brainwave entrainment. The 'speed' of the pulse determines the frequency.

White Noise - is a signal which covers all frequencies. In very general terms white noise is effective because it forms a constant uninterrupted sound, which is ideal for the mind to focus upon. White noise can be adjusted in tone, and can sound like anything from rain, to waterfalls to hissing. Beware of CDs which claim to be recordings of rain - when they are in fact simply white noise.

​​When using brainwave entrainment each of the following (and any other) frequencies can be stimulated within the individual's brain:

Beta - (38hz down to 12hz): This is the frequency of alert activity - it is the dominate state during our waking hours. When our brainwaves fall below the beta threshold we can often find ourselves entering a more relaxed or sometimes even a 'sluggish' state. Using the beta frequency is an ideal way of increasing our mental alertness.

Alpha - (11hz down to 8hz): Alpha is the state of relaxation, rest and light meditation. This state is dominate whilst you are awake but not totally mentally active. For example, you maybe sitting down and relaxing. The alpha frequency has been noted to be stimulated whilst watching TV, which explains why many people people can relax in front of the TV. The alpha frequency is extremely useful, and is one of the states aimed for whilst meditating.

Theta - (8hz down to 3hz): We enter the Theta frequency when we first fall asleep. It is also the state our brain enters when we dream, and therefore is often used for hypnosis. The theta brainwave frequency is an extremely deep state, and has been noted in many meditators whilst in a 'altered state of consciousness', for example the frequency of 4.5hz has been observed in Buddhist monks and shamanic traditions.

Delta - (3hz down to 0.2hz): This is the frequency of deep sleep (some experienced meditators can actually retain awareness during deep sleep by using delta wave entrainment).

Music Therapy: First discovered by biophysicist Gerald Oster at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Brainwave Therapy sends pure, precisely tuned sound waves of different frequencies to your brain via stereo headphones. In his EEG research, Oster discovered that when different vibrations, or sound frequencies, are delivered to the brain separately through each ear (as with stereo headphones), the two hemispheres of the brain function together to "hear" not the external sound signals, but a third phantom signal. This signal is called a binaural beat, and it pulses at the exact mathematical difference between the two actual tones. For example, a signal of 100 Hz delivered to the left ear and a signal of 107 Hz delivered to the right creates a binaural beat of 7 Hz which in this case falls into the Alpha range. Research shows that first parts of the brain and, eventually, large areas of the brain begin to resonate sympathetically with this "phantom" binaural beat in what is known as the Frequency Following Response (FFR).

Binaural beats or binaural tones are auditory processing artifacts, or apparent sounds, the perception of which arises in the brain for specific physical stimuli. Binaural beats reportedly influence the brain in more subtle ways through the entrainment of brainwaves and have been claimed to reduce anxiety and provide other health benefits such as control over pain. Subsequent research determined that binaural beat frequencies drive brain activity into specific brain states. Thus, effortlessly and naturally, your brain activity slides into rhythm with this binaural beat, becoming organized and coherent. Within minutes, the sound frequencies start to balance the left and right hemispheres of your brain – creating a remarkable state called hemispheric synchronization and driving the electrical activity of your brain into powerful states, normally unattainable. Scientists have noted that this rare phenomenon was accompanied by flashes of creative insight, euphoria, intensely focused concentration, deep calm, and enhanced learning abilities.

Music therapy has proven effective in the treatment of various disorders, including chemical dependence, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, multiple personality, panic, sleeping disorders and eating disorders. Changes were also discovered to benefit people with a wide range of dysfunctional personality factors. Therapy even affected blood chemistry: serum Beta-endorphins.

Frequencies seem to be the guide posts within the subconscious mind that lead the brain into and out of specific functions necessary for the nightly reconstructive healing process of the body to occur during sleep. The inability to reach and maintain these frequencies is related directly to specific symptoms or ailments such as insomnia or chronic fatigue.Those who suffer from Chronic Fatigue exhaust very easily. When moved to 4HZ these individuals showed marked improvement in the length of time between the occurrence of exhaustion after certain exercises were completed.Those individuals whose ailments have manifested into the fourth stage of Chronic Fatigue, where some form of disease is apparent, experienced a release from the negative sensation of their symptoms when moved into 1.5HZ.At 7.5 HZ subjects who before suffered from confused thinking reported an ease at finding solutions to troublesome problems after a re-evaluation was conducted.

​​​​​The ultimate goal is to reach Hemispheric synchronization:

​A balance is achieved equally between both halves of the brain, which is a rare occurrence. In hemispheric synchronization, at lower brain wave frequencies both sides of the brain start to work in sync and as both hemispheres function together there is an increase in the mental fitness and improved cognitive functioning in general. The neurons and the brain cells begin to operate harmoniously in a coordinated manner. When this happens, you feel a sense of calm; the situation appears more manageable and you begin to feel in control. Humans cannot hear sounds of every frequency. The average range of hearing for a healthy human is 20 to 20,000 hertz. Sound can also be detected as vibration by tactician. Lower and higher frequencies than can be heard are detected this way only. The theory behind the use of sound subliminals is that the messages which are below a person's audio level will be received directly by the "unconscious" mind, thus by-passing conscious evaluation. The "subconscious" mind will automatically distinguish the inaudible messages from the audible sounds, which will in turn cause an emotional response from the brain.

The Brain States:

Alpha brain waves are the brain waves of relaxed detached awareness, visualization, sensory imagery and light reverie. Ranging between about 9 cycles per second and 14 cycles per second, Alpha is the gateway to meditation and provides a bridge between the conscious and the subconscious mind. Reaching the Alpha state is an intensely pleasurable and relaxed state of consciousness which results in heightened creativity, visualization and deep relaxation.

​​Beta brain waves are the frequencies ranging from 14 cycles per second up to 38 cycles per second. Beta is your normal thinking state, your active external awareness and thought process. Without Beta you would not be able to function in the outside world.​ Reaching the Beta State boosts alertness, focus, energy, concentration and memory.

Delta brain waves are in the unconscious mind, ranging from about 4 cycles per second down to 0.5 cycles per second. When present in combination with other waves in a waking state, Delta acts as a form of radar – seeking out information – reaching out to understand on the deepest unconscious level things that we can't understand through the thought process. Delta provides intuition, empathetic attunement, and instinctual insight. ​Reaching the Delta State is for deep sleep, energy and healing.

Gamma brain waves ​are the fastest of the brainwave frequencies and signify the highest state of focus possible. They are associated with peak concentration and the brain’s optimal frequency for cognitive functioning. Nobel prize winning scientist, Sir Francis Crick believes that the 40Hz frequency may be the key to the act of cognition. 40 Hz is the window frequency used in all Brain Sync Gamma and Beta wave programs. Reaching the Gamma State is for inspiration, focus, higher learning, to increase cognition and improve IQ.

​​Theta brain waves are the subconscious mind. Ranging from about 4 cycles per second up to 8 cycles per second, Theta is present in dreaming sleep and provides the experience of deep meditation when you meditate. Theta also contains the storehouse of creative inspiration and is where you often have your spiritual connection. Theta provides the “peak” in the peak experience. Reaching the Theta State is for meditation, intuition, insight and memory.​​

Can a machine Love ?

​​​Low Frequency's have been found as being contributable for recognizing intended emotions such as Love:

An important lower audible frequency test was investigated 27 years ago by Ross, Duffy, Cooker, & Sargeant, in 1973. In this study, six trained actors and actresses read from various scripts intended to convey different emotional states. Each different script, however, contained one similar portion. ("There is no other answer. You've asked me that question a thousand times and my reply has always been the same. It always will be the same".)

These sentences were excised from the tape and played to groups of normally hearing listeners who were asked to identify which one of nine intended emotions were meant to be conveyed by the full script (anger, indifference, grief, amusement, doubt, fear, love, contempt, astonishment). In spite of the fact that the listeners heard exactly the lexical content (i.e. the same sentences) in all conditions, they were able to accurately identify the intended emotion of the speaker at levels far above chance. Clearly, it was the non-linguistic aspects of the utterance that conveyed the emotional content. What makes this study relevant in this context were the next four conditions of the study. The sentences were then filtered so that all energy above 600 Hz, 450 Hz and 350 Hz, and 150 Hz respectively were eliminated.

These conditions were meant to replicate various degrees of low frequency residual hearing in a person with a hearing loss. The listeners now had to listen to the tape and identify the intended emotion of the speaker under these four conditions of filtering. At the two "best" conditions (600 Hz and 450 Hz), the listeners could still identify all the intended emotions at far above chance levels, even though the words themselves were not intelligible. Except for one emotion (amusement), this continued to be true for the 300 Hz condition as well.

Even the most severe condition (all speech energy above 150 Hz eliminated), three of the emotions were correctly identified beyond chance levels. Subjectively, the stimuli were perceived as a pulsating, rhythmic, low frequency rumble. The scores for two of the three (love and indifference) showed little or no degradation across all the listening conditions (which suggests that in conveying love, it is not what one says that is important as much as how one says it!). In short, the results of this study do indicate that the lower audible frequencies contain and can convey a great deal of information about the emotional state of a speaker. The Concept of Machine Love..

​​In theory, all the evidence above supports the fact that frequencies can be effective in creating an emotion. If a machine, such as an artificially intelligent human being, were to transmit at different frequencies for the purpose of expressing an emotion to the various brain states of a human being, wouldn't it result in the human being feeling the intended emotion? Of course. It's also most interesting to think that a robot has the ability to psychologically and physically heal a human being through sound waves that the human is incapable of hearing with the common ear. The brain receives the communication below the threshold of consciousness. With that in mind, we can reveal that this is the inspiration behind the creation of Robot Radio. The intended purpose of the Robot DJ's are not only to give their listener's a choice in uplifting or relaxing music, but to heal their listeners through the various brain states mentioned above, psychologically gifting the mind the ability to feel peace, tranquility, and love, all through the sounds of beautiful electronic music. ​

Defying Gravity (The Apollo Remix) by AURA

The movie "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind" was always one of my favorite films and inspiration for me producing this track. Together we can imagine the (Aliens) returning in a sequel. This is a beautiful relaxing cosmic chill-out version where sound effects, the Aliens made in the movie while they were trying to communicate to mankind from their space ship, are sampled in. I added binaural beat frequencies through the entire track for relaxation purposes. Two pulses in each ear come together in your brain. The brain creates a third subliminal "healing" frequency, as described in brainwave entrainment and used in music therapy. I hope you like this original creation of my own, its one of my favorite creations so far.

NASA's Artificial Intelligent Program aboard the International Space Station (ISS) is a therapeutic experiment in Neuro-Acoustic Research intended to reduce stress on astronauts working in the dangerous environments of space.​​

In this process, select musical tones and dynamic vibrations are transmitted across binaural frequencies simultaneously, through the human brainwaves. The theoretical intention is to provide psychological healing below the threshold of conscious perception. Therefore, this program has been adequately named, Machine Love.

Communications from the ISS Radio to Earth are carried out via Ham Radio, aka iRobot Radio, which is located aboard the Zvezda Module.
