with an austere beat and a penchant for memory, chicago-based electronic duo vytyls run a veritable shop of musical curiosities. pick up a track. turn it over in your hands and admire its craftsmanship and meticulous design. though the original intent and history of the piece may no longer be overtly discernible, the intricate, driving rhythms and atonal underwater soundscapes suggest an implicit purpose. one offering might attempt to communicate via dial-ups or esoteric and deep-sea-grit sampling; another, with an evolving click beat drowning in reflective synth melodies. some pieces may arouse a feeling of dismay while others may induce the hypnagogia of a dying battery. if you find yourself lacking this shared vocabulary, remaining content to listen to and observe the digital beauty of the music’s unyielding robotic language is still more than a simple pleasure. vytyls creations are never of the here, the now, or the mundane.



I havent posted a track in a million years, but am actively still producing privately.  As a dubstep producer, I tend to aim for tracks that are somewhere between hard and gritty.  What I usually end up with, however, is something between gritty and chilled out.  Dubstep is not for everyone, and my personal flavor of dubstep is for even fewer people.    Music is not my career, but rather, a passionate hobby.  I know I will never be famous, and I do not care.  I do this for me.  I am my own biggest fan, and my own worst critic.  I have been making hip-hop beats casually for over a decade.  Then i  discovered Dubstep, and it was love at first listen.

I always have a bassline or a melody running through my head, and I make tracks as an outlet for that constant stream.  I also produce because the process moves me.  When I am producing, I am in another world.  Each track is born out of a particular mood or feeling, and when I listen to the tracks months or years later, I am drawn right back into the mood of that time, for better or worse.  I began putting my music online because I figured if I can move myself with my music, then perhaps it can also move somebody else.  I am thrilled to see so many people enjoying my music.

My current setup revolves around Ableton Live.   I use a Beringer 49-key keyboard and an Akai MPK Mini pad-keyboard.  I also own a Novation Launchpad (which admittedly gets little use.  Most drums are done on a Mashine Mk2. To create my basslines and synths,I mostly use NI Massive + Kontakt.    I have no formal training, and learned all I know by experimentation and online tutorial.

EK

EK (born Daniel Ibeh, May 4, 1990, in Lagos, Nigeria), is a Boston based rap artist. After migrating to the United States in 2001, EK found it hard to adapt to a life with so many cultural differences. He found the universal voice of music as a comfort and connection to the ever changing road that lay ahead of him.

Making a promise to himself to always follow his dreams, EK uses his love of words to tell his story. His first mix tape “Road 2 Stardom” was released in the winter of 2008, and his follow-up project “Radio Friendly” debuted in May 2011. The lead single Mr. Politician was a thought-provoking track that reflected on the political climate in America. He is currently working on his EP Hands of Time, which is scheduled for release in Fall 2014.

In 2013, EK officially signed with Defend Music based in Los Angeles, a record company that has sold more than 20 million units worldwide. EK’s compelling track "Mean Ol Town" was featured in "The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete", a critically-acclaimed feature film starring Jennifer Hudson in the lead role.

Currently, EK is collaborating with Ryan Sparker, the co-writer of Eli Reed's album "Nights Like This". EK regularly appears at music venues throughout the Boston area including Church, the Strand Theater, and Bentley College. EK's music has been broadcast on radio stations including 88.9 WERS in Boston, and he has appeared on BNN TV's "Shine" program. EK says, "I want my music to tell my life's story and speak of my challenges adapting to a world that knows how to stop dreaming. I want to be an example to young people that dreams can come true!" 

Growing up in Nigeria, EK realized he was always an outgoing child, able to articulate himself through his words. At the age of 10, EK moved to the United States. Living in an unfamiliar land, he connected with the wrong crowds and constantly struggled to defend his heritage. EK was arrested at 14, and the shocks of possible imprisonment made him realize that he needed to change his ways and find another outlet for his emotions. EK took out a pen and paper and began to write. 

His lyrical expression helped EK make his transition into manhood. From that point on, EK started to identify himself as rap artist and desires to influence today’s youth in a positive way. His music also helped him develop a spiritual balance within his life, and ultimately it made him the grounded man he is today. EK challenges himself everyday to practice his craft and exercise his passion.

Over time, he found himself naturally memorizing his words and putting them to beats. From that point on, EK started to identify as a hip hop artist who desires to influence today's youth in a positive way. His music helped develop a spiritual balance in his life, and ultimately made him the grounded man he is today. EK challenges himself every day to practice his craft and exercise his passion. 

EK has given 100% of himself to his passion for rapping and is focused on fulfilling his dreams. Through hard work and determination, the sky is the limit for this versatile urban rap artist. EK says, "If people open their hearts and minds to my music they will hear my story, and something will resonate in their souls."
