EarToGround Podcast 7 - NWHR

OUT OF PLACE ARTEFACTS, the collaboration alchemizing the sounds of german producers Rødhåd and .VRIL, embarks on a new sonic exploration with “II” on Rødhåd’s label WSNWG. 

This second longplayer ventures significantly deeper into the spheres of electronic music - exploring a wide range of abysmal drums and breaks as well as focusing on flickering sound sketches and elusive noises whose origin will have to remain a mystery for the listener. It aims to leave them in inexplicable realms between the dance floor and deep listening, unfolding its magnetism beyond genre definitions. 

Throughout the listening experience, one is exposed to bewildering surprises such as traces of lightheartedness and stronger use of samples, vocals and strings. “Universian” invites a softer tone, revealing a more seductive, gloomier and poppier facette of the duo.

The closing track “Triskaideka” concludes the journey by featuring classical musicians Angelina Delgado (Violin) and Alexandra Ivanova (Viola).

OUT OF PLACE ARTEFACTS considerably developed the rapport between both artists' contributions for this LP- merging them into a more harmonious, yet very distinct expression. Each of the 13 tracks showcases layered, intricate arrangements so that they become their own microcosms, forming a radiant universe as a whole album.

Handing over the controls to well-known figure of the German and Georgian electronic scenes in the persons of .VRIL and HVL, our next installment finds the pair laying down a quintet of hybrid electro and techno weapons that sends us straight back to the heyday of Rephlex and like-minded visionary ventures. All in that stark contrast between ethereal spaciousness and steely, martial rhythms out the industrial spectrum, ‘Far Field’ takes us on a voyage across the board, from breaks-heavy machine stunts to washed-out tapestries, via EBM-laced detours and junglistic maneuvers. Investigating the nexus zone between dance functionality and limitless escapology, it extrapolates both artists’ blends to further immersive, hypnotic effect. 

Taking over the A side, .VRIL gets the ball rolling with ‘Lost Together’, which sets the tone on a low-slung, nostalgia-drenched note; combining the syncopated swagger of downtempo techno with ambient-oid stasis and static-filled opacity. Like watching an all-metal sun sinking past the blazing skyline. Revving up the engines, ‘Fnord’ feat. RÆYN conjures up a way more muscular arsenal of big-room-ready wares, from aggro snare salvos to anthemic synth kinetics, through that replicant-hunting kinda vibe. One to have the Saturn rings go hula hoop, with all woofers and brains in the vicinity melting in XTC. Shutting the A side off, ‘We Believe’ returns to a lighter, more vaporous mindset but sure implements that signature heavy swing of .VRIL, flush with textured kicks and FX-soaked arps. True monster prog swell. 

Flip it over and there’s HVL dishing out a textbook example of his vortical electronic furls with the title-track, ‘Far Field’ - an oneiric drift that slowly rises from its heavy-lidded slumber, ascending towards bleepin’ n bloopin’ experimental effervescence as bars fly by. A number bound to hack your body and mind into two distinct facets, and while one dances its way frantically across the ever buzzing space/time continuum, the other shall reach a state of healing calm and transcending ubiquity. Smoothly shuttling us off to the upper layers of the ionosphere, ‘Lancet Mxi’ clenches it on a trippy note, taxiing us midway zero-G UK bass territories and eerie ambient abstraction. HVL’s total, widescreen vision at its most unhindered, all set at expanding your mind to yet uncharted horizons of sound and closing the gap between two distant, estranged galaxies. A fractured headspace to both dance and dream to.

In-Tan has quickly made a name for himself on the Paris techno scene, thanks to his deep, dark sets. He draws inspiration from his many European travels, from German techno in Berlin to melodic techno in the Netherlands. He also discovered a passion for breaks, UK garage, jungle and drum & bass during his stays in the UK, notably in the hippie city of Bristol. In-Tan offers an eclectic and open universe, in which he mixes different styles, from acid house to progressive trance, via breaks, hypnotic techno and hardgroove with a touch of acid.

All these influences have led him to produce tracks that blend abstract, hypnotic sounds with darker, 90s-inspired grooves to draw you into his musical universe. You can also hear his house-inspired touch through the sunnier sounds in his productions.

When Lego just turned 16 the Swedish duo 'The Knife' released their album 'Deep Cuts' with the track 'Pass this on' which enchanted her and brought her into the world of electronic music. Ever since she has explored the techno scene both in Sweden and worldwide, which inspired her to start doing underground raves such as Stockholm based 'Funny Bunny' and .WAV, and also later on club nights at clubs in Stockholm like 2.35:1, Södra Teatern and Slakthuset. In 2012 the will of spreading her own favorite tunes lead her into the DJ-booth. Her driving, trippy and hypnotic sets has since then taking her to festivals like Exit in Serbia and Volt in Uppsala, as well as clubs like Tresor in Berlin, Wave Athens and Pratersauna in Vienna. Lego is also one of the captains on the techno ship Parabel, handling bookings as well as being a part of the label.

Now an established force in contemporary Techno, Mike Bierbach, better known under his stage name Rødhåd is someone who has seriously put in the work. Having cut his teeth DJing as a relatively unnoted (but well loved by those in the know) local in Berlin for 10 years, one could argue that by the time success knocked on his door, he was more than ready for playing the international stage. It was during these 10 years of obscurity when he refined his craft to become the singular DJ he is now. 

Launching his party-series-turned-label Dystopian in 2009 was what truly tipped the ball over for Rødhåd. In a time where the Berlin scene was heavily oversaturated by fluffy, miscellaneous dance music, he & his peers set out to form a platform for real techno. The reception to this was raucous. 

Although he has lauded productions and remixes to his name, DJing is his true forte. Before abandoning his day job as a draftsman in construction “The Red” (as some call him due to his gingered, bearded appearance) was known for playing very long sets in Berlin’s most notorious hideaways. 

With an album, several EPs & remixes for a multitude of different artists under his belt, Rødhåd the producer has received equal praise as Rødhåd the DJ. Dystopian has hosted most of his releases, but in 2018 he founded a new label WSNWG that serves as a home for collaborative productions, excavated in sessions at his East-Berlin studio with his peers such as Lucy, Alex.Do, & Antigone.
