Season 3 Episode 4 - My guest is Suja Rishikesh Mavroidis, Director of the Market Access Division at the World Trade Organization (WTO). Suja is a fascinating individual who has been working in international trade since the GATT Secretariat days. In our conversation, she talks about having a very International upbringing and how that shaped her into eventually getting a job at the GATT Secretariat. 

She tells us how she experienced the GATT transition to the WTO and how International Trade has evolved over the years. Our conversation may become a bit technical, but only because Market Access is a very technical subject. Season 3 Episode 6 – My guest is Kholofelo Kugler. Kholofelo is a Counsel at the Advisory Centre on WTO Law (ACWL) in Geneva, Switzerland, where she advises developing country Members and least-developed countries (LDCs) on all issues relating to WTO law.

Kholofelo is originally from South Africa, and in our conversation, she talks about how she ended up in law school and how at one point she thought of becoming a diplomat. Her career eventually led to her getting involved with international economic law and Trade.

She eventually made her way to the World Trade Institute for the MILE program and has been at the ACWL for over five years.

She also talks about writing and editing a book on Trade from the South African perspective and her role as co-founder of the Trade Policy Exchange.

It is fascinating to hear how she balances her work and manages to be involved with all the other work she is doing, on top of her family life.

Season 3 Episode 8 – Doctor Edgardo Muñoz, Law Professor at my Alma Mater, Universidad Panamericana of Guadalajara. Edgardo wears many hats, including Arbitrator and Author.

In our conversation, Edgardo talks about his early interest in literature, pursuing a legal career, and how this took him to the UK and Switzerland. The literary bug bit him early on, and he has written a couple of novels, with the latest being influenced by his time as an associate working with banks in Switzerland.

He then returned to Guadalajara and has been a full-time professor ever since. He uses his novels as part of his teaching curriculum and talks about how storytelling engages with his students. He also juggles raising his family with his wife and a growing practice as a lawyer.

We could have talked for hours, and in fact, we did, but for now, I hope you enjoy this conversation.

Season 3 Episode 13 – Colette van der Ven. Founder and Director of TULIP – a Geneva-based consulting firm. 

Colette is an international lawyer with expertise in trade and development. In her work, she advises governments and international organizations on leveraging legal and regulatory frameworks to promote inclusive and green development. Colette holds a Juris Doctor from the Harvard Law School and Master in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and a Bachelor of Arts from Middlebury College.

In our conversation, she talks about how she got interested in impactful change to better the living standards of others. At first, this was in the direction of becoming a medical doctor, but soon after, it moved into trade and inclusive and green development. As she went from one professional experience to another, she did it systematically towards a very clear goal in mind- helping others. She founded and served as the director for Sidley Austin’s pro bono program – the Trade for Development Initiative. All this led her to create TULIP, where she spends most of her time. Although TULIP is just a few years old, it keeps growing and doing impactful work, being almost a synthesis of all the work Colette has been doing all along. Lastly, Colette tells us about her passion for helping younger generations discover their path, something she will be doing this semester as she teaches at the Graduate Institute.

Season 3 Episode 14 – Prof. Dr. Peter Van den Bossche. Former Chairman of the Appellate Body at the WTO and current Director of Studies at the World Trade Institute in Bern. 

I met Prof. Van den Bossche when I was an intern at the Appellate Body, and since then, I remember being impressed by how knowledgeable and kind he was. I did not know it at the time, but those felt like the golden years of the Appellate Body and one of the reasons for this witnessing the high-level work of the Appellate Body Members and the Appellate Body Secretariat.

But it is better if you hear this from Prof. Van den Bossche. We discuss going into law with a stronger emphasis on European law, particularly at the European Court of Justice. His interest and focus shifted towards International Economic Law when he studied at the University of Michigan Law School under Prof. John Jackson. Eventually, he made his way to the Appellate Body in the early days, and he tells us a bit about what he experienced during those formative years of the Appellate Body. 

He then tells us a bit about the selection process to become a candidate for the AB. He then shares some of the significant differences in his experience serving as an AB Member and serving as part of the Secretariat.

He also shares his views on the MPIA and what a future AB could look like. Lastly, he tells us a bit about his experiences with the WTI and the much-awaited 5th edition of The Law and Policy of the WTO.

We could have talked for hours, and in fact, we did talk for quite a bit after switching off the mic. So perhaps we will have to do the first, second part episode.

Season 3 Episode 15 – Nazrene Mannie. Executive Director of Global Apprenticeship Network (GAN) Global. 

Nazrene is a South African national and a specialist in social policy focusing on youth employment and skills development. 

In her work, she collaborates closely with organizations such as the Global Alliance for Youth, private sector companies, and international development entities such as the ILO, World Bank, UNESCO, and OECD to drive forward the agenda for agile Workforce Development within the context of the Future of Work.

Although many of these topics have been on many organizations' agendas for years, the COVID-19 pandemic brought them front and center to the collective consciousness, fostering dialogue and a stock-taking of where we stand and where we are heading. All this, in the minds of many individuals and their professional careers and work-life balance, as well as from a larger social and cultural perspective.

We touched upon many of these topics during our conversation, including automation, remote working, skill shortages, the future of universities, etc.

We could have talked for quite a bit longer since these are topics of great relevance. Nazrene discusses them so clearly and interestingly that the conversation flew by.

Season 3 Episode 16 – Professor Gabrielle Marceau, Ph.D.. Counsellor for Research on Legal Policy at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
 
Gabrielle is a Canadian national and an institution at the WTO, where she has been since its inception. 
 
I have known Gabrielle for many years, but this is the first time we had an extended conversation, and I enjoyed it.
 
During our conversation, she talked about how she got interested in law and how this eventually led her to International law at LSE. She also shares a bit about the recruitment process when she began working in International trade, which shows the importance of perseverance.
 
We also talked about the evolution of the WTO, which she has witnessed firsthand throughout her career at legal affairs, the office of the Director-General, and now focusing on Research and Legal Policy.
 
There are some parallels in the work she has done and the objective of this podcast, which we discuss when addressing some of the motivations behind the book “A History of Law and Lawyers in the GATT/WTO” ( https://www.wto.org/english/res_e/publications_e/historylaw15_e.htm) and her project chronicling stories around the creation of the WTO available at http://www.wtocreation.org/en.

Season 4 Episode 02 – Dr. Juneyoung Lee (이준영), Legal Affairs Officer at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

June has been working at the WTO for over 14 years, with a stint at the International Trade Center (ITC) and previously at UNDP.

Dr. June is a national from Korea, and as she tells it, even though she’s been away from Korea for a long time, she still longs for going back.

In our conversation, June talks about how her studies brought her to Switzerland and eventually to the WTO through the internship program. She has always been curious, and this has led her to explore working across various divisions at the WTO, including Accessions and currently Trade and Environment. Through this journey, it is clear she has formed a holistic view of the organization.

She’s had experience teaching, which she has found rewarding, as she has also learned a lot from her students. Lastly, Dr. June was the first-ever secondee of the WTO to the ITC, which she tells us opened her eyes to the potential of further collaboration.

June has had an impressive career as an international civil servant, and her devotion to her work and constant improvement was refreshing. It was a pleasure talking to her, and our conversation flew by. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Season 4 Episode 06 – Marco Tulio Molina Tejada, Deputy Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Marco is one of the longest-serving Deputy Permanent Representatives to the WTO currently working In Geneva. If you know a bit about the WTO and/or International dispute settlement, you’ve probably heard about him. I have been meaning to invite him for a conversation. After a few hectic weeks, which led to the WTO concluding with has been hailed by some as one of the most successful WTO Ministerial Conferences, we found some time to sit and chat on this and a couple of other topics.

Marco tells us how he got into the legal profession, primarily influenced by a long line of lawyers in his family. Then, he talks about how he got into International Trade and participated in negotiating Guatemala’s first Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Mexico.

After a while, he made his way to Geneva, where he has been since 2004. Season 4 Episode 09 – Leticia Caminero, Consultant Research and Special Projects at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

This season is the Caribbean season at The Rodolfo Rivas Project! Like a couple of my previous guests this season, my guest hails from the Caribbean, specifically the Dominican Republic. She is Leticia Caminero, a fellow professional in the International Intellectual Property scene. We have been trying to arrange it for a while and finally got around to it, and I could not be happier.

Leticia is a lawyer and holds an LLM from the University of Cambridge. She was also part of the first cohort of the Young Professional Programme at the World Trade Organization. As she tells it, the Programme was integral in her career, and she talks a bit about the selection process and the whole experience.

Early in her career, with her entrepreneurial spirit, she started a thriving law practice and talked about the successes and challenges of following this path.

After her stint at the WTO, she joined the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington D.C., which eventually led her back to Geneva, where her heart is, but let her tell you more about that.

Currently, at WIPO, she is doing a lot of capacity building, something she is truly passionate about.

Season 4 Episode 08 – Roy Davidoff, Modern & Vintage watch expert and half of the Roy and Sacha duo.

The Rodolfo Rivas Project has always been about talking to interesting individuals and learning from their experiences. Since I am a lawyer working in International Trade, Intellectual Property, and Dispute Settlement, many of my guests work in these areas. 

However, I’ve also featured filmmakers because film is a passion of mine, CEOs because I also dabble in entrepreneurship, and other professionals, with the idea of covering some of my interests. As this project grows, I look forward to including writers, scientists, athletes, politicians, and many other industry leaders.

Since I am based in Switzerland, and Swiss culture is closely linked to watches, I plan to talk to many individuals in the industry to learn more about the different facets of the industry.

The first of hopefully many guests in the watch world is none other than Mr. Roy Davidoff, a celebrity dealer in the watch community.

Roy and his brother are based in Geneva out of their shop in the Old Town. Roy has become a point of reference, and his shop is an essential stop for any watch enthusiast visiting Geneva before a necessary appointment.

Roy has worked in the industry for decades and made a name for himself as one of the foremost experts on the Omega Speedmaster. But since then, he has branched out into everything related to watches.

In our conversation, we covered how he got into watches, his views on the ever-changing industry, the Omega x Swatch Moonswatch collaboration, and if the balance of power in the watch industry can be altered. During my visit, I was a fly on the wall and saw with delight how he operates, and believe me when I say he is working 24x7.

For episode 50, I wanted to do something a little different, and I cannot think of a better guest to track how ten films have influenced the personal and professional life of someone than my friend and colleague, Marijke Smit.

We have been colleagues for over six years, and we usually talk about International Trade but also about films, music, and popular culture. Hence, let us bring a bit of that conversation to a special podcast episode.

We talked about how she became a lawyer, got into International Trade, and made her way to Geneva. I had asked her to make a list of 10 influential films, and in our conversation, we discussed all of them and how they influenced her. We try to avoid spoilers, but in some instances, we do go into specific plot details. I did not know her list beforehand, and I was surprised about some of her picks.

It was a fun conversation, and I enjoyed getting to know Marijke through her film choices.

Season 4 Episode 14 – Anna Kazejak, award-winning Filmmaker.

Anna is the talented filmmaker behind the funny and intelligent "Fucking Bornholm", which I had the pleasure of watching during the Zurich Film Festival in a packed theater. The film is very personal, and we hear a lot more about the development and some behind-the-scenes stories in our conversation.

Although we try not to go into spoilers, we delve into some of the story's specifics. 

Anna also tells us about her career and offers valuable insight into what it means to be a director and the arduous task of creating a film, and a career.

We recorded this in a hotel lobby, so the audio may not be as clean as I would like it to be, but the conversation was worth it.

Anna is delightful, and I highly recommend watching her latest film. I also look forward to seeing what she does next!

Season 4 Episode 15 – Gavin Weeks, Associate Fellow at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, and a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist.

During my recent trip to Oxford University for a Chief of Staff Certification at its world-renowned business school, I had to opportunity to meet Gavin. As part of the program, he delivered an insightful lecture on sustaining energy at work.

I found the lecture very useful and thought we could talk more about it and other topics in a wide-ranging conversation covering psychology, grit, sports, and talent, to name a few.

Gavin is a clinically-trained psychologist who consults with individuals, teams, and organizations on leadership and behavior change.

Gavin draws on a professional background in clinical and sports psychology to build performance and understand and overcome barriers to change. He has a doctorate in Clinical Psychology and a Masters of Science in Neuropsychology.

Season 4 Episode 17 – Juan Pablo Moya Hoyos, Dispute Settlement Lawyer at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland.

I have known Juan Pablo for some time since we ran in the same circles, and we have common friends, but we only really had time to talk recently. We have a lot in common and cover much of it in this fun and insightful conversation. However, we only got to some of it.

Juan Pablo is an economist and a lawyer, but as he tells it, his brain works more like an economist. Like many Colombians, he got his trade start through the Moot Court Competition. He talks about his experience in the Moot Court and how he stayed involved with it afterward.

This led him to a stint working in Colombia's Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism, where he worked on disputes and FTA negotiations. Afterward, he traveled to Georgetown University for an LL.M., eventually bringing him to Geneva and the WTO.

Ah, there is also a story about how he got to New York for his Bar Exam.

Antony Taubman, a well-known figure in the International Intellectual Property scene, serving as Director of the Intellectual Property, Government Procurement & Competition Division at the World Trade Organization. We had a fascinating conversation spanning his illustrious career across the private sector, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, various embassies, World Intellectual Property Organization, academia, and the WTO.

During the last few years, Intellectual Property in International Trade has had its moment in the sun. So, it was great to catch up with Antony to talk about his career and some challenges and opportunities in the sector for the next few months and years.

Season 5 Episode 06 – Jorge Castro, Chief of Section at the World Trade Organization’s Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation (ITTC), in Geneva, Switzerland.
Jorge is a very experienced professional on the regional and multilateral front. He worked for the Venezuelan government and then for the Andean Community before making his way to the WTO. He was in Legal Affairs for many years before a stint at Pascal Lamy's DG office and now as Chief of Section at ITTC.
We covered a lot of ground in our conversation, and if you stick to the end of the episode, you can hear a new section in the podcast, which I look forward to incorporating from now on.

Season 5 Episode 07 – Geraldo Vidigal, Coordinator, LL.M. International Trade and Investment Law, University of Amsterdam.

Geraldo, although young, is a veteran of the International Trade world. Ask anyone interested in trade, and they will know of him. I have known Geraldo for a long time, with our professional careers running in parallel.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Geraldo during his last visit to Geneva, and the conversation was a blast! We covered his origin story and how his career has evolved, and at every stage of it, he was confident of being at the best place he should be at that precise moment. It may appear he took the scenic route, but he got to where he wanted to get all along.

We also got into some nitty-gritty of trade, but if trade is not your thing, there are plenty of other aspects worth listening to.

Geraldo also takes a stab at the new section of the podcast, and he does a great job at it. Stick to the end to listen to that.

Season 5 Episode 08 – Nir Baranga, Director, Trade in Services and Investment Department at the Foreign Trade Administration of the Ministry of Economy, Israel.

Nir is one of my earliest colleagues at the Ministry. We started around the same time and remain kicking and screaming. He is a frontline negotiator leading bilateral, plurilateral, and multilateral services negotiations for Israel.

When he visits Geneva, we usually talk about many things besides trade, and podcasts are one of them. We have wanted to do this podcast for some time, but fitting it into our busy schedules has been challenging.

Luckily, during his last visit to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the ongoing Joint Initiative on e-commerce, we managed to find some time to talk and record this interesting conversation covering his professional career and how his career path has changed a couple of times, and how in hindsight it all makes sense.

He also provides an insightful view into what it means to be an International trade negotiator going back to the Trade in Services Agreement negotiation (TiSA), which was one of his first experiences in International trade negotiations.

We could have also talked about many other things, but perhaps those conversations are left for another episode.

Willy has been in Geneva and the WTO since the GATT days and has had a vibrant experience across the WTO, serving in different capacities across various divisions.

Everyone knows Willy, and this is because he is a very knowledgeable and friendly person who, in terms of the Multilateral Trading System, has seen it all.

I have been working with him for many years, and we have worked together in many negotiations, including the ITA expansion, EGA, and TiSA. Since then, he has become a celebrity in the WTO, thanks to his involvement in agriculture, a topic that is close to his heart, and by the way he describes it, it should be close to everyone's heart. 

In our conversation, we covered a lot; from his background, growing up in Costa Rica, he talks about Costa Rica's strong interest in multilateralism and how they have decided to double down and be heard across all multilateral initiatives, successfully punching above its weight.

Our conversation was insightful, refreshing, and fun!

Season 5 Episode 12. Kilian Riedhof, Award-winning Filmmaker known for "Gladbeck" (2018), “You Will Not Have My Hate" (2022), and his latest "Stella. A Life." (2023), which stars Berlinale best actress award-winner Paula Beer.

Kilian is a multi-talented Director and writer who studied at the Hamburg Film School. He was at the Zurich Film Festival to present his latest film, and that is when I had the pleasure to sit down with him to discuss his career, his craft, his latest film, and also a bit about what he is working on next. 

As you know, I love films, and I enjoyed talking about films, techniques, storytelling, and some of the challenges faced when making a film and working as a filmmaker.

Kilian is a master of his craft and a delightful individual. I highly recommend watching his film, which has been a long-gestating project that he finally got to make.

Continuing with our second season, I had the pleasure of hosting Miguel Villamizar, who is likely among one of the most well-liked individuals in International Trade. When you meet him, you will know what I am talking about, and after listening to this conversation, you will likely agree with me.

Ana has worked in International Trade for many years, including in the private sector, the government, and in diplomacy in Geneva for the last few years. This is where I met her. Season 2 Episode 1 - My guest in the first episode of the second season is Petros C. Mavroidis, Edwin B. Parker Professor of Foreign & Comparative Law Professor at Columbia Law School, leading International Trade academic and CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) Arbitrator.

Our conversation delves into a variety of other topics, such as how Petros became a Professor, how the WTO has evolved, his views on the WTO as an institution and what are some of his thoughts on the future of the WTO. Season 2 Episode 4 - My guest is Manuel Sanchez, the CEO, and founder of Enloya, he is also a very good friend. Although we have known each other for many years, I tried to explore some new ground during our conversation. There are certainly many parallels between his professional life and mine, so hopefully, this turned out to be insightful and interesting.

Manuel talks about how he got interested in International Public Law, and specifically Economic Law, pretty early on and how this brought him to Geneva. He also shares his experience working for the Mexican Government, mainly in Anti-Dumping proceedings. After his LL.M. at Georgetown, he made his way back to Geneva, where he worked at the WTO, and also happened to be the point in time where I met him. After this, if it wasn’t interesting yet, he got bit by the start-up bug and he is currently trying to balance it out with his Ph.D. studies.

Season 3 Episode 1 - My guest is Edward Kwakwa, Assistant Director General at WIPO. This is the first episode of our third season. The second season did not go as planned, and I ended up recording very few episodes. That is something that I really want to fix this season.

To kickstart it, I am honored to host Edward Kwakwa. We have been meaning to have this conversation for some time now, and I am delighted we finally managed to sit down and talk. Edward has had a pretty International life, born in Ghana and then traveling to Canada and the US to study. He worked in a US law firm for some time and eventually made his way to Geneva. In Geneva, he was supposed to be here for one year but ended up staying for good. He has worked in many organizations in his professional experience, including the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Trade Organization.

In our conversation, he explains the role of WIPO and delves a bit into his new portfolio, which includes many global challenges such as climate change and global health. All in all, it was a fascinating and informative conversation that flew by!
