On July 13th, 2021, one of my all-time favourite labels, named after its inception date, 130701 celebrated its 20th birthday. What can I say about its output, its delicate curation, and its monumental impact on our lives? Just look at the roster of its artists, many of which are showcased in this exclusive mix put together by Dave Howell, and you will immediately be swept away in the beautiful torrent of music that has been so extraordinary comforting in the last two decades. I would even proclaim that because of this imprint, on which many of today’s biggest names made their debut, the world is a different place, a richer place, and definitely better. Just look at HC’s coverage of its releases – I think I wrote about every single one! There is so much more praise which I would like to publish, but Dave has also written a little bit about this special mix, and so I’d like to give him the stage for a moment. About a week ago, in collaboration with Hollie Kenniff who curated the roster of artists, Headphone Commute released the first volume of the benefit compilation For Ukraine with 100% of all proceeds being donated to the International Rescue Committee (rescue.org). This is one of those things, folks, that does not need to be written about, promoted, or sold. Nevertheless, with the help of Brian Housman of Stationary Travels, I am happy to share with you an hour-long compilation teaser, featuring some of Brian’s favourite pieces. It’s only about half of the entire content, which you can now stream as part of our mix series and podcast, but we still ask you to share and help in any way that you can to support our message. There is a sense of humble intrigue about the musical outpouring of Martyn Heyne. The German producer has done well to craft a niche for himself within a world which is often so restrictive in the perception of genre and place. A classically trained musician he is more capable than most, however it his attention to the conceptual which makes him such an interesting prospect as an artist. Next month he will releasehis first full length album in the form of "Electric Intervals". Set for release on the newly launched 7K! imprint he has recorded an album with divine promise, a lengthy composition which was recorded at his studio next to Tempelhof airfield.

We welcome him to contribute as part of our Monday mix series, a platform which allows artists to dig through the eclectic reaches of their back catalogue, music collections and beyond.

Roel Funcken officially popped up on the scene in 2010, with his solo debut, titled Vade, out on Ad Noiseam. But fans of electronic music, and IDM in general, have been tracking this Dutch musician for over a decade prior, when, along with his brother, Don, the duo has released some of the genre defining music on labels such as Djak-Up-Bitch, Schematic, Sublight Records, Neo Ouija, n5MD , Arcola (Warp) as the one and only Funckarma. In 2009 the Funcken brothers kicked off their very own, digital-only, Funcken Industry imprint, which hosted a few of their other projects and offshoots, such as Shadow Huntaz, Scone, Quench, Automotive, and the latest from Roel's solo works. Roel continues to influence the evolution of music through numerous releases (Sapper Morton on Analogical Force, Semtinal Convex on Methlab and Prester Hynn on his own imprint to name a few) and active engagement in the community, with music festival curation, mixes on mixlr and soundcloud and weekly playlists on Soundcloud and spotify. Roel's music is advanced in sound design, often incorporating unique experimentation in electronic sound, with cut-up, twisted, atmospheric sonic soundscapes, leaving the cranium always begging for more. His ambient textures maintain a cinematic quality throughout, while his percussive arrangements retain a constantly mutating framework, always reconstructing its rhythm and structure, contradicting complex configurations and minimal design. It's always a pleasure to taste the latest treat from this aural engineer, and find the latest gem in his never-ending arsenal of sound.
