PUSH COMES TO SHOVE (cover)

In memory of one of the very greatest guitarists and songwriters... Eddie Van Halen...

After I posted my cover Eruption, I was going through Van Halen’s catalogue and Fair Warning was always one of my favourite VH albums. It features songs like Mean Street, Dirty Movies (I love That song!), Unchained, Hear about it later, So this is Love?, Sinner’s Swing, so many classic rockers. But there is one quite peculiar song there too, which contains in my opinion one of Eddie’s very best guitar solos: Push Comes to Shove.

What strikes me here is the great and really special songwriting. Killer sections and Dave singing at his best. Many influences, it has that seventies vibe, reggae, funk and a bit of fusion. For me, Eddie steals the show here for coming up with that solo section and those most peculiar chords on rhythm guitar that gives this song such a strange feel. Eddie chose the most unique notes, that basically according to music theory wouldn’t fit in. But it creates such a tension and unique feel. That paired with his playing style, picking very hard and always with passion and maximum intensity. Great, great work.

I really sat down with all the instrumentation, all the parts, not using any tabs, all by ear, so I might’ve missed a few things here, nor do I claim to come close to Van Halen’s original. This is to celebrate Eddie, his life and legacy, so much I owe to Eddie. He is the one that made my early years so much fun and he’s the reason I play guitar... Rest In Peace Eddie... here’s to you!

Eddie has set the bar too high. Before Eddie you could get away with pushing up some strings and pulling a complicated guitar face, but because of his juggling in Eruption and his solo in Michael Jackson's Beat It, millions of boys and girls stopped playing the guitar and then started filling courses in the neighborhood supermarket."
