"Each place in the known world has a soundscape of its own. But what about the places once known and now forgotten? While it’s interesting to ask what did they sound like before, it’s far more compelling to ask how do they sound now.

What will multiple layers of erosion, abandonment, aging, ghost-invasion and myth do to a place? What rests now in these wastelands? Which bells do they ring within us?

Well, you already know Roger Plexico has been around the world. But what he’s been keeping to himself is how fascinated by these forsaken corners he’s always been. 

Remember how you used to dare your friends to go wander the cemetery at midnight? Roger Plexico does that to himself and keeps a way broader definition of “cemetery”. 

“No Man’s Land” is an EP collecting tracks inspired by theses ungodly, unkept, unstable pieces of land. Capturing the crackle of its bones, the drumming of its phantoms and the thumping of its demons, he composed odes to these monuments of banished memory.

Thankfully, he focused on producing music (and a little video… and a little chorus writing… and well, all things creative). As SlimCutz’s sidekick, he’s travelled and played everywhere. As Monster Jinx’s go-to producer, he left his mark on almost every single release. But he’s still studying the craft. In all of its aspects. He may learn very fast, but there’s just always more to discover.

Quando o indie rap nasceu em Portugal, o Stray estava lá. Viu, estudou e colaborou com os MatoZoo, a primeira banda de rap alternativo do nosso rectângulo. Fez parte da Matarroa, a primeira editora do género a funcionar cá. Cresceu com ela. Viu-a morrer. Quando os pais dela desistiram e desapareceram, ele reuniu forças, chamou os outros órfãos e começou a Monster Jinx.

Desde aí, ganhou o estatuto de Vingador dos Nerds, o título de Batman do Rap e o reconhecimento geral como esventrador dos limites do rap. 

Todas as temáticas são permitidas, todas as palavras podem ser re-contextualizadas, todas as imagens podem ser criadas. Para ele, todos os ouvintes são inteligentes e nenhum é preguiçoso.

Chamam-lhe complexo, difícil, chocante, louco. Tanto nos arranca o coração como nos leva a um universo fantástico. Mas ele só quer escrever cada vez melhor (e encontrar cada vez melhor café).

Gajo denso. Ar pesado. Revoltado com o globo. Chateado com as modas.

No entanto, é fácil encontrá-lo com um sorriso parvo na cara, feliz sem saber bem porquê, sem pesos nos ombros, só a flutuar por aí.

J-K nasceu no Congo, cresceu na Sertã, viveu em Lisboa, morou no Porto e voltou a Lisboa. Não que isso tenha influenciado a sua música. Foram outros os poderes que açucaram a sua imaginação. Quando não está irritado com tudo ou contente com nada, distorce a vida, cria novos enredos para o dia a dia e novos finais para os guiões das conversas.

Existe em paralelo. De um lado, a fantasia. Do outro, aquilo que realmente existe. O que o confunde. 

E a única forma que conhece para organizar o cérebro é a música e o único método que lhe enche as medidas é o Hip-Hop.O J-K é um gajo casado com o cansaço e que tem uma amante no devaneio.  E nem vamos falar da sua Espada Gigante.

The world is quietly hoping for this future — this dyspotian version of society we suddenly found ourselves living in — to cease and be replaced by another era. Basically, everyone is sick of the future — or, at least, what the future turned out to be. So we took it upon ourselves to find another version of the impending. 

Realistically, we couldn’t shoot presidents and end shady world orders. Therefore, we did some Monster Jinx music under this idea. Could another present be found by searching for another version of the current future? Trust us, that banner did fly. Damn, even Frank Nitt of Frank n Dank ended up joining us. 

And that’s the way ROXO 3 came about — mainstays of the label brought their game and a few new or seldom seen faces surprised us with some fire. Take a listen!

"Roger Plexico é uma figura misteriosa e os seus exactos contornos biográficos são desconhecidos: a sua nacionalidade ou idade são motivo de especulação há muitos anos, mas certezas não existem. Ao longo dos anos, no entanto, algumas pistas dispersas foram dando espessura ao mito e aproximando-o do mundo dos homens. No universo do diggin' circulam histórias extraordinárias, mas que os mais respeitados dealers e coleccionadores garantem ser verdadeiras. Há relatos de armazéns carregados com as maiores preciosidades impressas em vinil, holy grails de que só se conhecem meia dúzia de cópias e que trocam de mãos por somas avantajadas estão na sua posse, normalmente em duplicado.

Como é que se constrói uma colecção assim? Estando no lugar certo, no momento exacto. Nem um minuto antes, nem um minuto depois... Sabe-se que Roger Plexico esteve em Nova Iorque na viragem da década de 70 para a de 80 onde assistiu de perto ao nascimento do Hip Hop. Roger era a figura discreta no parque quando Afrika Bambaataa tocava para os amigos, o tipo num canto do Roxy quando Kool Herc experimentava os primeiros breaks de funk. Por volta da mesma altura, Roger andou pelo Paradise Garage onde ouviu Larry Levan a inventar o futuro com o melhor sistema de som da cidade, cruzando disco, new wave e sons electrónicos da Europa como ninguém.

Irrequieto, Roger foi viajando por outras cidades americanas. Passou por Chicago e presenciou de perto a transformação do disco em House pelas mãos de Frankie Knuckles. Comprou discos da Trax e da DJ International na Imports e depois viajou até Detroit onde acrescentou à colecção toneladas de sobras de clássicos da Motown. Também passou pelo The Institute onde viu Juan Atkins a imaginar o futuro à custa de caixas de ritmos fabricadas pelos mesmos japoneses cujos carros estavam a deixar a principal indústria da cidade à beira do abismo.

Em meados dos anos 80, a curiosidade de Roger Plexico levou-o a atravessar o Atlântico. Por terras de Sua Majestade, Roger assistiu ao nascimento subterrâneo da cultura rave e envolveu-se na troca de passos às autoridades com desinformação sobre os endereços das festas onde alguns DJs pegaram nas ideias americanas fermentadas em Chicago e Detroit e as começaram a transportar em direcção ao futuro. Passou pelo Haçienda e pelo Shoom, viu a música ganhar corpo e velocidade nos sound systems que amplificavam as raves e percebeu as mudanças no som, numa evolução contínua: hardcore primeiro, jungle e drum n'bass depois, two step, grime e dubstep mais tarde. Muitas dessas mudanças ecoaram a partir das antenas montadas nos telhados de Londres. E Roger esteve sempre por perto, ao lado das Pirate Radios Até ao dia em que percebeu que o som que o entusiasmou no Plastic People estava a perder o norte e resolveu trocar de cidade. Depois de Londres, perdemos-lhe o rasto... O mais incrível é que há quem garanta que já o viu nas imediações dos Clérigos e até a abanar a cabeça numa noite especialmente agitada no Passos Manuel... Delírios, provavelmente."
