An Interview with the mother of an infant murdered by the army in Pauktaw Town

I interviewed with a  Rohingya from Kyauktaw, the interview goes as follows:
Soe: Could you please tell me in detail briefly about a 6 years girl who was killed on 18th November 2013?
Eyewitness: 18th night at 2:30AM Rakhine after their Bon Katin festivals, they started talking about the girl, security came to our village and called me I went  with Ward Administrator, checked around the village, there was no sign of any murderer. Later they found
thrown the girl in paddy field near river,it seemed that they pre planned the whole event systematically, thrown there and blamed us.

Soe: OK, how far is it from your village to the place where they found dead body of the girl?
Eyewitness: 100 yards, between Rakhine and Muslim village.

Soe: How far in mile?
Eyewitness: One mile far
Soe: 1 mile far, OK, they threw her there, right?
Eyewitness: Yes, they threw her there and went
Soe: Is there any festival in Rakhine village?
Eyewitness: There is always festival there, they watch video and enjoy.
Soe: Was the girl, 6 years old, found dead?
Eyewitness: Yes, she was found as dead.
Soe: Al right, Could you please tell, 3 Muslims who were arrested;
Abul Gafur, Hafiz Ahmad, Jamal Husein, do you why were they arrested? There are many people in the village, why did they arrested them, how was the relationship with that case?
Eyewitness: Their houses are edge of the village, closer to the place.

Soe: OK, among those three, there is an old man, more than 60 years old, two are young, why did they arrested those 3 Muslims, are those of one family?
Eyewitness:  As their houses are on the edge of the village, they have contact with some good Rakhines who bring vegetables and necessary things for us, we can’t go anywhere to buy things, and we are starving, we survive here because of those people, they have good
relationship with some good Rakhine who bring things to us for sale.

Soe: According to you, you are living in a prison like village, can’t
go and buy anything, those 3 Muslims help buying things for you from Rakhine, and are that true?
Eyewitness: Yes, Yes.

Soe: You can’t buy anything they help you accompanied by Rakhine, is that true?
Eyewitness: Yes, Yes.
Soe: How many family members does the old man, Abdul Gafur  have?
Eyewitness: 8 , 8
Soe: Oh Allah! OK, has Jamal Husein married?
Eyewitness: Yes, married
Soe: What about Hafiz Ahmad ?
Eyewitness: Also married
Soe: How many children does Jamal Husein, son of Abdu Rahman, have who
is 38 years old?
Eyewitness: 7 children.
Soe: What about Hafiz Ahmad?
Eyewitness: 5 children
Soe: As you said those 3 are helping you as they have good relationship with Rakhine, buying necessary things for you, right?
Eyewitness: Yes, sir
Soe: Were they arrested from their houses?
Eyewitness: They were arrested in the morning 8AM from their houses to the Rakhine village, and we couldn’t see them from that time, they were being tortured brutally.
Soe: Hello, tell, please tell, if phone line cut up I will call you again. Where are they now?
Eyewitness: They are now in the temporary security station, still they are being tortured.

Soe: Are those police who are torturing them in the temporary station Rakhine or Burmese?
Eyewitness: There is no Bamar here, all are Rakhine, they have been torturing us a lot, now we have no strength to be patient

Soe: Is there anyone among the Muslims who could go there and appeal for them?
Eyewitness: We are not allowed to approach there.
Soe: They accused those 3 Muslims who help you for survival through Rakhine, right?
Eyewitness: They are forced to admit, torturing to say they did, they may not survive because of torturing,

Soe: Is there any way to appeal for them, in the police station how can they survive, can they be released?
Eyewitness: Ask me , I will explain.

Soe: Is there any  possible way that they can be released?
Eyewitness: You are talking about release, they are under torture, no
way to survive.

Soe: Could you please tell about Muslims in Kyauktaw, population and situation?
Eyewitness: Muslims are in critical condition, all are in their own village starving, we can’t go anywhere, only in the village

Soe: So, you can’t go out anywhere, right?
Eyewitness: Yes, yesterday, all Muslims gentlemen from Rohingya Ywa(Rohingya village) were called in the school, and checked our private parts.
Soe: Who called them?
Eyewitness: 360 men’s private parts were uncovered and checked in Rohingya village.
Soe: Who called them, police?
Eyewitness: Police and military checked, uncovered their longyi and checked their private parts.
Soe: Were they called to school, which school?
Eyewitness: Madrasa, brought us to our village Madrasa and checked.
Soe: Was it happened yesterday?
Eyewitness: 360 Muslims were brought to the Madrasa and uncovered our longyi and checked our private parts 

Soe: Why did they see? Why?
Eyewitness: They accused us that we raped a 5 years old girl, and
checked all our private parts.

Soe: Are there 300 Muslims men?
Eyewitness: We are 363 Muslims men here.
Soe: Were those three arrested first or after checking all, they chose
those 3 from you after checked.
Eyewitness: Those 3 Muslims were arrested and took away first, later
they came and checked us.
Soe: I understand now. You cannot go anywhere, can’t do like before, right?
Eyewitness: We have no way to survive, if you can please take away all Muslims of Kyauktaw to your place and save us.

Soe: You are in prison like village now, can you buy food and things
easily there, or not.
Eyewitness:  We can’t buy anything, can’t go anywhere from the village.
Soe: Can you go from village to another?
Eyewitness: Can’t, only to the river nearby village for fishing.
Soe: How many villages are there?
Eyewitness: From yesterday, they are not allowed us to go river even.
Soe: So you are not allowed fishing then,
Eyewitness:  Yes, we are not allowed to fish.
Soe: How many Muslim villages are like you?
Eyewitness: 5 villages
Soe: Are all the same like you. Eyewitness: ……….. voice is not clear
Soe:  Are all Muslims villages the same?
Eyewitness: We were provided 1 tan rice(measure basket for grains, equal to 120tins) per month
Soe: Who provided rice, UN, NGO or Government?
Eyewitness: Rakhine, Rakhine provided rice, all Rakhine
Soe: Will those 3 Muslims be killed by them.
Eyewitness: Torturing made them half dead now.
Soe: Where are their families now?
Eyewitness: All their money were confiscated by them(police)
Soe: What did they do with their families?
Eyewitness: They came to my house and crying a lot , we can’t stop
their crying .
Soe: I understand. Who really killed that girl, do you know anything about her?
Eyewitness: That’s their plan………..
Soe: hello, hello.. Who really killed that girl, do you know anything about her?
 Eyewitness: Rakhine killed that girl,
Soe: Rakhine killed her and accused you, right?
Eyewitness: Yes, Yes, Sir, They killed her thrown near our village.
Soe: So, they killed and thrown there, right?
Eyewitness: Yes, Yes, they killed and accused us
Soe: Do you have anything to share with us, this message will be
listened the whole World.
Eyewitness: We are in critical condition, we are starving now, we have
no way to survive, we are in very difficult situation now, we can’t go
from one place to another. It will be better if you could call us
there.
Soe: Is there anything to say?

Eyewitness: I would like to request the World as well as all Muslim
countries to save us. Oh my fathers and brothers of the World, for the
sake of God, save us, take us away from here, we are in dire
situation, we appreciate you.

An Interview with a Rohingya Muslim on the alleged rape of a Buddhist girl in Kyauktaw

I interviewed with a Rohingya from Maungdaw, the interview goes as follows: 
(Burma Time - 4:00pm) (14/1/2014)

Soe : Could you please tell me what happened in Kila Dong ( (Du Chee Yar Tan) village last night? It said 2 trucks of people were arrested and taken away; please tell us what happened there.

Rohingya from Maungdaw: Rakhines from Rakhine village and Hlun Thin (Police) came to the village to rob, as they have been persecuting us since long time ago, people from the village became impatient, some Rohingya came out of their houses, tried to defense, they fought, after that they blamed that Rohingya killed a police officer.
Soe: Is it a rumor that Rohingya killed a police officer and hide his weapon?
Rohingya from Maungdaw: Yes, they are blaming today, but that news is not true. They said a Hlun Taine(Police) was killed, his gun was hidden by Rohingya. They said they saw blood of his.
Soe: That’s a rumor, as they said you killed him and hide his weapon, right?
Rohingya from Maungdaw: Yes, it was a rumor, they spread the rumor to torture us, and Government has been planning to create such story since long time, they usually create the same ways.

Soe : What time did it happen?
Rohingya from Maungdaw: Night time,12:30 AM Soe : OK, Did they arrest any person?

Rohingya from Maungdaw: They said a police was missing, his name is Kyaw Sein Aung 
Soe: Who? Kyaw Soe Aung 
Rohingya from Maungdaw: Kyaw Sein Aung, a sergeant, Hlun Thin (police), some people from Gadusara village were also attacked.
Soe: How many people were arrested so far?
Rohingya from Maungdaw: 2 trucks of people were arrested.

Soe: Where did they bring those people?
Rohingya from Maungdaw: To the Maungdaw police station, 
Soe : Is there children and women?
Rohingya from Maungdaw: Yes, whoever they saw all including children and women
Soe : What kind of truck, were they, military truck?
Rohingya from Maungdaw: Yes, military trucks, big trucks.

Soe : Please keep in touch with us about the situation, do you have anything to say?
Rohingya from Maungdaw: We can’t go there, we are trying to get more information, we will inform you if we get.

Interview with Witness to violence in Duchiradan Village In Maungdaw

I interviewed with a Rohingya from Gudusara Village , the interview goes as follows:

SOE: Could you please tell about the event of Kiladong ?
Villager: Some Rakhine from Natala accompanied police came to the village (Kiladong) and beat some young (Rohingya) severely, when some people tried to defense, police shot, rape women.

SOE: I heard what you said. Now I want to know about the women whom were kept, raped and tortured, I heard 8 women were kept in a Rakhine village, could you please tell me about that in detail? 
Villager: A Rohingya from Salbonnya Fara (Zaw Ma thet) Village was brought to a Rakhine village as force labor by HlunTaine (Police), there he saw some women were kept ground floor of a Rakhine village, one of the lady told him from the hole of bamboo wall. She said “We were raped and tortured by the Rakhine, we, 8, girls were brought, the day before yesterday, 2 of us died because of rape and torture”

SOE: When did they die and when were they arrested?
Villager: They were arrested on 13.1.14, from Kiladong, carried 80 girls and women by truck and distributed them among the Rakhine villages.

SOE: From which village, were they arrested, from Kiladaong?
Villager: From Kiladong East.

SOE: Brought to which village, what is the name of Rakhine village? 
Villager: That Rakhine village locates east of Salbonnya Fara (Zaw Ma thet) Village, it is called Mya Waddy.

SOE: What is the name of the Rakhine village? 
Villager: Mya Waddy

SOE: What kind of Rakhine are they, were they born in Maungdaw, or from Natala, or came from Bangladesh?
Villager:  Those Rakhine are all came from Bangladesh, authority confiscated Muslims lands, and forced Muslims to build houses for them, 

SOE: According to you, 80 women were brought, divided, and distributed from the monastery, right? 
Villager:  Yes, Yes. 80 women were arrested and brought, 8 women were kept that village, 2 died, and the rest are raped and tortured day and night.

SOE: When did the 2 ladies died. How do you know that?
Villager: They died on 19.1.14, dead bodies were brought somewhere.

SOE: 19th right?
Villager: Yes,19th , 2 died, dead bodies were brought, the rest were raped and tortured, a person who is from Salbonnya Fara(Zaw Ma thet) Village, Hlun Tain (Police) brought him there as a force labor, he met the lady who told him the event. 

SOE: Where were those dead ladies brought? 
Villager: They said “Dead bodies were brought somewhere; we don’t know where they were brought?

SOE: Is there any news? How many ladies are kept in Rakhine villages?
Villager: Out of 80 women 6 are in Mya Waddy and the rest are in all Natala and Rakhine villages. They were provided to Rakhine terrorists who rape daily and torture them, some of them may die and some survive. People from Kiladong scattered, some became beggars, some died, and authority came and said they would provide everything but did nothing. They can’t get in the village. Authority spoke orally but people are starving and dying.

SOE: Some minister, authorized people, State Media went there, they said no one died in Kiladong, the World Media are lying, what do you know? How many people were killed by them? 
Villager: More than 200 were killed, many corpses were floated in river, children were thrown and killed brutally, at least 100 children were killed, many were seen by us, now all those corpses were brought somewhere by trucks, we heard some were buried in the mountain.

SOE: From which village are you talking now? 
Villager: I am in Gudusara we are hiding here, Hlun Taine (Police) are looking for us to arrest.

SOE: Insha-Allah, we will report the World, fight for justice for massacre of our brothers and sisters in Kiladong, do you have anything to share?
Villager: Rakhine Prime Minister and team came here yesterday (22.1.2014) , we all told them the detail event crying, after they left, National MRTV broadcasted today, no one died; nothing happened there, everything is in normal. They are lying, Government announcing false news, they are liars. Whatever news announces from TV are false, not true, they have been persecuting us. They tortured us a lot. 

SOE: Can people go to Kiladong? 
Villager: People are in fear, no one dare to go there because killing.

SOE: How many people were in Kiladong?
Villager: There were nearly 4000 people lived in Kiladong.

SOE: Do have anything to say?
Villager: People of Kiladong who survive are suffering a lot, they are starving now, and the villages where they are hiding are also very poor villages. How can people go to Kiladong, all their properties including cattle, were taken away by HlunTaine and Rakhine .There is nothing left in the village, when Minister team came, that certain time, even in front of them Rakhine were carrying our properties, they saw that but they are lying now. All properties were brought by trucks.

SOE: How can we save those women kept in the Rakhine villages?  Government announced no one died, no one was killed. How can we help?
Villager: We beg you to tell the World to send international Media here, International force here to save, they are killing us, will kill us continuously, they are torturing us , please help us, please help us, we hope you could do something. 

SOE: So sorry. We will try our best.
Villager: They will kill us, they will kill us, please help us, our women were brought and raped, we are not allowed to go there and see, Government is doing, police are doing.

SOE: Yes, Government is doing everything 
Villager: Police are torturing us, 80 of our ladies are being tortured, please help us, they will kill us. 

SOE: How’s situation of Maungdaw now.
Villager: Very bad, we are blocked, no one can go out, if they see any man in the street, arrest them and torture, we are not allowed to go from one village to another, no right for work, all man are in danger, whenever they see any man arrest, I would like to request International Media to come and see what’s going on here.

An interview with a witness from Gudusara to the violence that took place in Duchiradan village

I interviewed with a Rohingya from Nurullah Village , the interview goes as follows:

SOE : Could you please tell me about fire of Duchiradan, Kiladaung West hamlet of Maungdaw, on 28.1.14 at 8:45PM?
Villager : That day, Town Administrator, police chief officers and other people from authority had a meeting at Bagguna Rakhine village of Maungdaw, in the morning. At Magrib time (6 to 6:30PM), authority said from every Muslim village, some people should go Kiladaung for security purpose, before that day, Muslims took place around the village, that day, police commanded Rohingya to stay in the school of Kiladaung East, only. Authority announced that no one can keep victims of Kiladaung in their houses. So some victims (ladies) who were staying other village went to their houses in Kiladaung West, when fire started at 8:45PM, Rohingya form Bagguna tried to go there and stop burning but Hlun Taine who was guarding Kiladaung west didn’t let them to reach there.

SOE : Was there Rakhine mob accompanying with Hlun Taine (Police)?
Villager: Yes, when Hlun Taine pointed their guns towards (Rohingya) people, they couldn’t dare to go there. 

SOE : How did fire start, before fire started, was there any police and Rakhine mob there?
Villager: Hlun Taine and Rakhine were there, they said for security purpose. 

SOE : The place where fire start, was there any Rohingya living in those houses or around.
Villager: There was no man in Kiladaung West, some ladies lived in house, and those ladies were forced to go there in the morning by Ward administrator of ShariFara. As Rohingya couldn’t approach there, couldn’t put fire out, a lady from the particular house ran to us and told us “We were staying that house, we saw fire from distance, and we saw Hlun Taine and Rakhine holding swords and wooden sticks in the light of fire clearly from distance. 

SOE : Before fire started, did any Rakhine get into the village with help of police?
Villager: Yes, they were there after Magrib time (6 to 6:30PM), Hlun Taine (Police) and Rakhine were seen on the road as well as in the village,“Hlun Taine police was surrounded and let Rakhine mob got into the village to set fire” said eyewitness who saw it.

SOE : Sorry, how did they set fire, surrounded police and let them who to set fire? 
Villager: Rakhine mobs, 

SOE : How did they reach there, by car or by motorbike? 
Village: Rakhine mobs are always together with police, Rakhine came with police, they are doing as if there is no law in the World, they conduct whatever they want, if people could approach, no house would burn.

SOE : How many houses were burnt down there?
Villager : 27 houses were burnt down.

SOE : Do you have anything else to say ?
Villager: We are now living in surrounding village, every village is in danger, is there anyone who is thinking to save us, does the World let these oppressors right to persecute us? We are so worry that they will eliminate all of us soon.

SOE : Today, EU delegate there, how’s situation now?
Villager: Some Rohingya ladies were met by the delegate?

SOE : From which village did they come (Are they victims of Kiladaung)
Villager: They were from Kiladaung, Ward administrator brought them there. When Ward Administrator informed that they had to go to meet (the delegate), many ladies were ready to go and followed with them but on the way, there were Hlun Taine who stopped them, only a few ladies were allowed to go there (to meet delegation)

SOE : I would like to confirm again that before fire started at 8:45PM, did Hlun Taine, police and Rakhine from Natala be there together? Could you please confirm it again? 
Villager: Everyday, 2-3 Hlun Taine police are on petrol but that day, many Hlun Taine (police) started their activities at Asar Time(4-5PM), looking their activities people were worry that something would happen, they were coming and going the whole day. Then at night time they set fire. 

SOE : Government announced that Rohingya burnt their own houses and ran away as they have plan, what do you want to say about that? 
Villager: No, what Government announced was not true. The World is strange now, Government has been persecuting us, the World asks from the Government which has been persecuting us, not from the victims. Government arranges some brokers among us to deceive the World, whenever any foreign delegate come to investigate, Government doesn’t allow real victim reach there, their fake evidence are brought there, the reality is concealed in this way, real victims and real place are covered by fake things.

SOE : Government said “Rohingya burnt their own houses and ran away?
Villager: No, No, that’s wrong accusation 

SOE : How can we help you, what can we do for real victims who lost families and properties? 
Villager: It is very important that any International team, if they come here, they should meet the real victims who lost their families; someone lost his mother, sister, brother, we request International Organizations to meet real victims. Government arranges their brokers every time to conceal the reality.
They built a new road from the west, they use that road now intentionally, not old one, because it is easy to reach and Muslims not aware coming behind them.
