Everyday life is often filled with many small anxieties that we deal with by simply pretending they do not exist.
Sometimes they thicken beyond the horizon of our field of vision, turning into a sense of impending danger, a floating leviathan, an immense bird of prey hiding in the clouds above the skyscrapers ready to grab us. Our only defence is to try to ignore it, hoping that oblivion will slowly devour it, relegating it to another plane of existence.

And sometimes, it is simply like dreaming of suffocating...

'Tra macerie di lutto' is a work about remembrance, about the ability of our mind to mutate an event into memory. How real is what we remember? How do time and memory change what we have actually experienced? The combination of acoustic instruments and electronics gives life to two compositions that seem to change continuously while remaining static, where the sound appears volatile while chasing an end that seems to never come. This release is inspired by ‘Tra macerie di lutto’, a poem by Alessandro Izzi.

The record delves into the haunting history of the former psychiatric hospital in Colorno (Parma – Italy, in use from 1873 to 1978). Titled "Retrograde Amnesia”, it explores the lives of patients who were once confined to the institution, many of whom were forgotten by society. 
The hospital, which is now abandoned, was once home to over a thousand patients, including those who were deemed "dangerous" or "marginalized" by society. Among them were prostitutes, alcoholics, vagabonds, and even small children. The psychiatrists who worked at the institution were free to experiment with new treatments, including practices such as electroshock and frontal lobotomy. While these doctors saw themselves as innovators and experimenters, many of the patients were no longer considered people. One of the devastating consequences of the treatments administered at the hospital was retrograde amnesia, which is the loss of memories of past events. Many patients who underwent these treatments were left with gaps in their memory, unable to recall important moments of their lives, as their identities were fragmented and their shared human experiences obliterated. Forgotten by society and stripped of their own sense of self, they were consigned to the shadows of history. 
"Retrograde Amnesia" is a haunting and emotional record that aims to shed light on the lives of these forgotten patients. Through the use of ambient soundscapes and atmospheric textures, the music captures the sense of isolation and despair that many of the patients must have felt. Enveloped in the echoes of empty corridors and abandoned rooms, one easily feels consumed by the weight of the lives that once occupied these desolate spaces.

En ce début de mois de Janvier 2024, quoi de mieux qu'une rétrospective des sorties qui ont marqué l'année 2023. Entre coups de cœur, découvertes et artistes phares de la scène, je vous propose une sélection d'une vingtaine de morceaux, pour un résumé hautement partial des plus belle sorties de la cuvée échue.
Replongeons nous dans la très riche et foisonnante année 2023, au sein d'une scène ambient toujours aussi vive et prolifique. Entre labels qui s’affirment, artiste émergents qui émergent forts, newscommer talentueux, et artistes phares au sommet de leur art, on ne s'est pas ennuyé durant cette année, qui j'en suis sûr ,ne nous a pas encore livré tous ses secrets. Tour d'horizons non exhaustif, tant il faudrait au moins deux volets supplémentaires pour faire le tour du sujet. Mais on aura l'occasion tout au long de cette saison radiophonique d'égrainer les morceaux qui sortent du lot.

Pepo Galán is a composer, multi-Instrumentalist and producer born in Málaga. His compositions create a characteristic sound with micro-textures, noisy atmospheres and melancholic melodies loaded with beauty and elegance like dense sound mists. He began his career in the early 90's, forming part of several bands where, in addition to playing bass, guitar or drums, he connected with eclectic styles such as punk, metal, experimentation or electronics.
