May 12, 2014: I've been freestyle singing what I call "#freemantra." I was listening to Autobiography of a Yogi just now, and figured I'd probably do well to try and chant a well known mantra. You know, like this one from the homie Paramhansa Yogananda.

You can call this a scratch vocal. I'm going to call it a one take, no studio and a prayer. I'll re-record it someday. For now... thanks for the music Shyamala Sajnani.

Never heard those words before
I repeated them, and took them into my Monday morning by recording the #freemantra below.

2014 presents to us with several examples of the hellish negotiation of power.
Cops are killing fathers in broad day.
Missiles are killing children the same.
There is an ever-growing need for us to learn how to respond.
The Beast isn't much concerned with matters of the Heart,
and will encourage everyone to be Numb, deaf and blind.

So, as you do whatever you do...
learn, discuss, build, organize, resist, rinse, pray, mourn, stack paper, count blessings, (repeat)
don't you forget to stay concerned with matters of the heart.

We spend hours doing the work, being in solidarity with the workers, and we should continue.
It’s also fine to spend a few mins every day reading a poem, singing a song, settling down.

Continue to be in communication with the human spirit.
Continue to be in communication.

A quick freestyle thinking about people we love that we need to regularly leave, and come back to.

Inspired by what I've learned from Hip-Hop, you go, you say, you concern yourself with what you've said after, and if it's useful, you share. That's what freestyle is, off the top, honest, and what ever words you can conjure in the moment.

I wrote this for my daughter.

I call them #freemantra.
