"How is health data used in harmony with research? Health data research group Connected Health Cities and composers from the Royal Northern College of Music are collaborating to transform five key projects into contemporary musical pieces.
 
If you could hear your health data, what would it sound like?
Connected Heath Cities (CHC) has been conducting research across the North of England, using health data to improve the lives of patients and increase our understanding of disease.
Now, CHC is bringing its research out of the lab by collaborating with composers from PRiSM (RNCM Centre for Practice and Research in Science and Music) to transform five key projects into contemporary musical pieces.
Come and find out how health data is used in harmony with research at a live performance at Manchester Museum, from making sure that stroke patients are identified and treated as quickly as possible to improving care for children with asthma.
This is part of CHC’s wider commitment to engage the public in the discussion on the use of health data in health and social care research and NHS service improvement with their successful public campaign #DataSavesLives. CHC is a project led by the Northern Health Science Alliance and funded by the Department of Health."

I developed my piece after collaborating with Peter Mellor from Connected Health Cities to understand the work which had been undertaken to improve the processes around stroke diagnoses and treatment in Greater Manchester. 

My research involves looking closely at the relationship between digital technology and the complexities of real-life performance situations, so it seemed like the most salient choice for this project was to focus on the implementation of their Paramedic App used in identifying strokes.

In my writing, I sought to tease out the theme of how data can (or even should) influence and inform action. One way I attempted to do this was by reflecting on my recent work with live coding - which involves programming musical algorithms in the computer and populating them with information, which in turn generates sound when the code is executed. I was interested in recreating aspects of this approach with live instrumentation, so I began by constructing chord clusters for the winds which evolved in the same way my musical programming would.

Later, I began transcribing my score into the computer, and acquiring synthesised recordings of it. I then began sculpting and layering these sounds to create new ones, and even put them through an app of my own which could cut them into small fragments and play those back at different speeds. The effect would often be – for example – to have a flute playing at a quarter of its normal speed, and so to be pitched down dramatically, at which point it became hard to distinguish its sound from that of the horn or the bassoon. This ability to play with the identity of the instruments tied in well with the notion of false positives entailed in identifying stroke mimics.

Subsequently I attempted to recreate these same sounds with the live instruments. Both the results and the original electronic sounds can be heard in this piece, and perhaps this will evoke questions about whether the sound source is genuinely what it is perceived to be.

Pilipinas is a response to a poem of the same name written in Tagalog by the young Marc Jardin from All Hallows Catholic College. I liked the way his poem touched on an innocent love of one’s country, its natural beauty and spirit, while also not shying away from the darker aspects of its history, and hoped that my piece could capture those contrasts.
