A rare interview with Stanley Kubrick (1965)

Une invitation à parcourir l’Altiplano Potosino, région désertique du Mexique au-dessus de San Luis Potosi, à 400 km au nord de Mexico. Sur ces hauts plateaux à 2000 mètres, le désert est loin d’être vide. On entend les habitants des villages et des hameaux, les bergers avec leurs troupeaux de chèvres ou de moutons. On part à dos d’âne ou en calèche pour aller charruer les champs. Entre cactus et arbustes, des vaches cherchent quelques brins d’herbes. De retour au village, on se retrouve tous à l’église et à la fête locale. Les coyotes chantent en écho au train qui traverse l’immensité de ce “désert” mexicain peuplé de vies et de sons.

Gay bars had been raided by police for decades. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people had been routinely arrested and subjected to harassment and beatings by the people who were meant to protect them.

But one night, in this place called the Stonewall Inn, when the police stormed in to continue their abuse, the clientele fought back.

"Remembering Stonewall," produced by Dave Isay of Sound Portraits and StoryCorps, was was first broadcast in 1989, on the 20th anniversary of the riots. It was the first documentary, in any medium, to explore what happened that night, and it weaves together the perspectives of survivors, historians, and people who were deeply affected by the events that night.
