Aurora Halal - EOS-01 Tape

Mindscan Tapes, an English label that was active between 1988 and 1994, who released, amongst others, Beatronic and UK Electronics, two compilation series that had a notably wide style for the time. At the end of the '80s, it was deemed appropriate to stick to stylistic zones. However, Robert Maycock, the sole young Englishman running this DIY structure, mixed electro, early techno, ambient, experimental, house and industrial music, all while keeping it cohesive. We're still amazed to this day, with regards to the quality of these compilations, how underground his work was, best seller did only sell 30 plus copies.  Here at Delodio, we decided to select our favorite tracks from these two compilation series, with Robert Maycock's blessing, and make an album out of them, which we hope will help pay our respects to the contributing artists, and highlight the "artistic direction" work that Mindscan Tapes made, via these flawless choices. We want this album to also be a celebration of the way things were done and the typical mindset of this era from before the internet. A time when people had no other choice than to help each other out, to advance the common cause, to hopefully push their own projects forward, with the single goal of introducing people to new music. To be a transmitter amongst transmitters. Copied on demand on home tape decks, these cassettes were circulated via mailing lists that people tried to somehow promote by send flyers by post to other music fanatics, who were doing the exact same thing, to try and grow the network. "UK Electronics 1988-1994" is the sound of an era, via the very personal vision of a young Englishman who would spend all of his dole money on the production of underground compilation cassettes.

Deep Breakfast 142 - Pareidolia

An emotional rollercoaster of a mix comes to us this week from Groovy Groovy boss Akanbi, recorded live and direct from the Nowadays booth deep in the summer of 2021, alongside DJ Voices and EQUISS. These were the early days of our reopening and New York's return to nightlife, after a difficult year of closures due to the pandemic. There was a sense of cautious optimism in the air for some, and exuberant joy for others. Akanbi's set on this night met the dancers where they were, merging a tender emotional tenor and uplifting soulfulness with headier rave moments through his unique sense of pacing, all laced in groove and full of surprises. Here's two hours of a DJ fully immersed in their signature style, a set packed to the brim with bubbling percussion and downtempo interludes.

Currently based in Vancouver, BC, Adam 2 (@adamtwo) is a DJ, producer, organizer, and perhaps above all, a devotee of the dancefloor. They are the kind of person who's likely to have a meet-cute story with a surprising number of your friends from everywhere in the world (we met over a popsicle in the front row of No Way Back once upon a time). They bring the same spirit of community and giving they bring to the dancefloor to their engagement with the music community, most recently through their label @pprzrecords with DJ Hockey and their Afrofuturism is NOW mix series.

"So for mixes usually, I’ll find a few songs which have a common narrative/story. Then with that narrative in mind, I'll think about what the start and the end of the story sound like and do I have songs which I can use for the start and the end. I’ll usually then split the mix into 2-3 parts (3 parts for a recorded mix, 2 parts for a live performance) and each part will have the same shared theme but different energy levels.

For this one, I had a few electro tracks which weren’t really based on phrases, but were long and evolving, so I could mix them as textures kinda like how I would mix techno. There is a mix of electro/bass/techno throughout, however I purposely tried to avoid songs with 4x4 kick patterns.

In terms of a narrative I envisioned a soundtrack to a science fiction movie, recounting a story of a journey gone wrong, and elements known (science) vs. elements unknown (religion/ritual). It is always interesting to reflect on when a mix was recorded and how it reflects that period of time; for me it reflects a period of Winter, an ongoing pandemic and a bleak view of the future. I wouldn’t be able to record the same mix now because I am in such a different place emotionally and musically compared to a few months ago.

It was honestly so fascinating while writing the interview for this mix series to realize I’d come full circle and I was playing electro again but in a new way, after discovering it years ago and leaving it behind after getting so tired of it."

Lychee (@lycheefrut) & I had a lovely time joining May's Nowadays Nonstop with an extended back-to-back, and I'm glad we're able to revisit the moment.

We wanted this set to be as fun as possible while distinctly ourselves, and I love that you can hear a bit of both of us in the recording, dancing side-by-side in one of our favorite venues and building steadily toward a euphoria of our own.

Last February @Humanaut hosted @Savile, for his 3rd session in the hot seat that is the Hot Mass booth. Since his last set at the club and now, he has moved to a new city, put out some top notch releases and played sets the world over, garnering him residencies at some of best clubs around (also championing those around him all along the way.)

Following a warm up set by Detroit’s 2 Lanes, Savile proceed to play a set that could honestly be described as nothing but a roller coaster ride. Track after track gave way to rapid shifts in genre and style, causing the crowd to responded with enthusiastic cheers to each unexpected twist and turn. So find a seat and enjoy the ride, this one has something for everyone.

“I picked-up a lot of interesting records on tour in 2019 with the intent to share them for the first time at Tangent in 2020 at our yearly gathering. I spent the days before NWB listening to these records and thinking about which I felt were most powerful to share in that moment of missing you all. As I prepared I thought of what I would have played if we were all together in that room, the system tuned for our intentions. 
 
The night of the recording, Octa, Q and I built a little homage to the event in the basement of the cabin. I ate mushrooms. And I played the records too loud. The selections were meant to reflect my evolving take on the NWB sound. As usual my interest in genres is mostly in trying to blend them, so this mix is an ecstatic collage of electro techno post-dubstep hip-house-informed psychedelic turntable chaos and breaks. 
 
Watching the stream live with so many of you meant a lot to me. It’s hard to put into words how much I would like that experience of togetherness right now. 
 
Thank you to all who watched live including those who donated, your support was extremely generous. It made me feel more secure during a truly difficult time.

"It's the Celtic holiday that Halloween spawns from. It was the loop point, the new year. Ancient people dealt with grey areas in strange ways, the change between years caused this loose period existing between the end and beginning. This is where it gets interesting: they believed dimensions were colliding in a sort of interdimensional crosstalk, where the planes of the living and the dead were touching, so the dead could walk the earth. A way to convene with your ancestors, and a great reason to burn fires and scare your friends and neighbors. There's way more to it, most of it can't be written, it can only be felt, which is usually elusive but somehow easy at this time of year."
 
The original recurring party for Interdimensional Transmissions is Samhain, celebrating the ancient Celtic holiday that acknowledges the loop point of time, and the origin of IT. Had there not been Covid-19 the plan killer, we would have had the 20th anniversary of this party in Detroit, with Eris Drew headlining. As it stood, we celebrated Samhain XX with an over the top stream celebrating so many facets that we find fascinating, a place for total immersion into interesting music and cutting edge thoughts for a whole weekend at our favorite time of year. This was broadcast continuously for over 30 hours on October 31 — November 1, 2020. 
 
If the world is going to burn, this is what we want to hear, who we want to be surrounded by. Thank you so much to every artist for sharing your art and musical vision.
