Holy shit, where did you get the track "D8" from? Never heard that before. I know 1941 is from "Let's Groove" and "Kimigayo". Fantastic stuff!

Some of the most memorable tracks are born out of failure. DJ Pierre's lucky 303 accident springs to mind, or Luciano’s classic “Orange Mistake”, which originated in a LFO filter malfunctioning. And the charmingly highpitched melody of “Do It Again” – a track we discovered through the Claremont 56 “Originals” compilation by Lexx – also came into being by a twist of fate: A midi channel was incorrectly assigned, young Shinichiro Yokota then fleshed out one of the most idiosyncratic house tracks of all time. That was 25 years ago. Rush Hour just re-released the Hunee-sponsored compilation “Soichi Terada presents Sounds from the Far East”, also spotlighting a couple of tracks the Terada apprentice Yokota produced. In this Q+A (the first ever published in English), Yokota (46) talks Yellow Magic Orchestra, Lil Louis and the lost charm of making house the old way.

Next up on the Local Selection Mix Series we welcome Josh Kavanagh, one of the founding members and faces behind the beloved Irish collective Bubblegum.

Joshua kavanagh is a Dublin based DJ & one half of the Bubblegum crew which run regular parties in Dublin, from it's beginning in The Bernard Shaw, to growing and packing out venues around the city as well as inviting over acts such as Orpheu The Wizard, Esa Williams and Bufiman. 
They base their sound at these parties around what they love, any strand of world music but not limited to, South African, Nigerian, French and everything else in between.

The mix opens up with some soul, lovers rock and reggae from Canada and Nigeria, moves into some boogie and then shifts into a more uptempo clubby sound throughout the latter half of the mix.

It’s always a pleasure to premiere material from a debut release. Today that pleasure comes courtesy of Glaswegian production duo, Denny Pally. Their record, Us Against The World, drops August 3 on Crash Reserve’s new sister label, Infinite Wisdom.

We could call it a ‘house’ EP, but that would undersell its diversity. Our premiere – the A1, called 'UATW' – fits snuggly in that category. But 'Vegan Chops' includes hints of 90s IDM, with some killer sax to match, while 'At It (Live Jam)' features an electro-style beat.

'UATW' is punchy and up-beat, simple, and effective. The classic house beat synergizes with a groovy bass synth to carry the track for its almost six minutes. Add to that some chopped vocal samples and dissonant-but-harmonious chords and the sonic picture feels well-rounded. It’s a dance floor tune, undeniably.

As into 'UATW' as we are, 'Vegan Chops' is perhaps the record’s highlight, and so deserves a notable mention. It’s unique; perfect for some quarantine-style background music that won’t put you to sleep but also won’t scream for your attention.

As its first release, Infinite Wisdom shows promising signs with Us Against The World. And as such, both the label and Denny Pally are making their mark as up-and-comers worth keeping an eye on.
