Part of me just did not want her anymore
The part that wanted something less difficult
casually exploring promiscuity
The part that was very content when we ended
a smaller part, but not a small part

I HAD to be that guy, you see
that bad person
for a little while
It's true
Shameful truth
I could not resist it
and shw was leaving anyway

I had to dally with women
I had to see what it was about
what it was like
Curiosity beckoned me
and the lifestyle tempted me

I wanted those unknown girls
more than I wanted her
for a while
just a brief while

Lots of reasons for that
lost in excuses
about the difficulties of our relationship
and the obstacles that seem so stupid
when unpacked and examined

But also
I wanted to be THAT guy
that my friends talked about
and craved the glory of it
the jocularity and war stories

I think losing her
put all of that on steroids
What would have been a few became a few dozen
because I couldn't stand to be alone at night
thinking of her
But that's not the reason for it
just gasoline on a fire already burning

Maybe I had to be that guy
so I could be THIS guy
The guy I am now
From the excesses, came the wisdom

That guy became the Me
who is faithful to his woman for decades
who will never stray again
in no small part because
I have seen it and done it
and have no curiosity or desire for it

I confess
she did not deserve that, to pay for my growth
and I admit
she was always so much better than me -Confession from That Guy.
