The Travellers’ Black Black Minds is an obscure roots reggae classic from 1977,  a four-part harmony vocal album from an under-recorded Jamaican group. The record is one of the earliest productions of Lloyd “Prince Jammy” James, who would become “King Jammy” within a decade. The album was made at roughly the same time as his debut LP from Black Uhuru. 

This edition is remastered and expanded with additional tracks, liner notes, and the original cover art.

“Collectors’ enduring fascination with ’70s Jamaican reggae stems partly from the sheer volume of good music generated from an island of less than 3 million people. The competitiveness of Kingston’s studio scene, with queues of aspiring singers arriving for auditions and sessions musicians knocking out rhythm after rhythm every week, meant even releases that didn’t cut through at the time could become greatly loved by aficionados years later.”

So it was with Black Black Minds, the debut and sole album by four-part harmony quartet, The Travellers. Recorded for prodigiously talented engineer, and pupil of King Tubby, Lloyd ‘PrinceJammy’ James, the album is a delicate, lovingly crafted work that captures the beauty and fervor of the “rockers” era of roots reggae. On its 1977 release it fell short of the same success as LoveCrisis, Jammy’s debut long-player for another group from the same Waterhouse area of Kingston, Black Uhuru. Yet its distinctive close harmonies, heartfelt lyrics, precision musicianship and crystal-clear Jammy’s production, make it worthy of attention.” - Angus Taylor

The lineup of The Travellers (also known as the Mighty Travellers and the BlackAces) consisted of Neville Morris, Leroy Hoffman, Ashley Fray and Wesley Codner. When the band initially approached Prince Jammy they only had a small repertoire of songs so Jammy asked them to “just sing, create something on the spot. And it was good, so I decided to record the album.” These songs of sufferation, hope, love and classic Jamaican storytelling were all completed within a month utilizing Jammy’s existing rhythms and new bespoke recordings, all of which were mixed at the legendary KingTubby’s studio. This glorious obscurity has now received the reissue treatment it so thoroughly deserves, with fully remastered audio, restored artwork, updated credits and extensive sleeve notes from King Jammy’s specialist Angus Taylor.

After over a decade of releasing classic official remixes and perhaps even more legendary bootlegs like "Call Me a Marley" with Stylo G, Deejay Theory finally steps into solo album territory with “Everything is Energy”. Delivering 10 tracks of original compositions produced and mixed fully by Theory, the album also features standout vocal performances from Kabaka Pyramid, Eesah, Runkus, Royal Blu, Suku Ward, and Blakkamoore. Traversing the landscapes of dancehall and reggae while saluting Theory’s bass, jungle, hip hop and soulful beginnings, “Everything is Energy” is an authentic taste of Theory’s musical persona, and an exciting take on modern sonics as a whole.

Azizzi Romeo Releases First Official Mixtape Worldwide

19-year-old Jamaican reggae singer, Azizzi Romeo, announced the release of his first official mixtape on Thursday, November 22. This mixtape, dubbed The Progeny, was created in collaboration with Lion Trod, a notable roots-reggae dub selector from Kingston.

The young artiste’s musical prowess as a singer, instrumentalist, songwriter and producer showcased on his inaugural mixtape is deemed outstanding. It features roots-reggae dub-style selections that address several worldwide issues, with stylings by his father, Max Romeo, and sister, Xana Romeo. His intricate vocals and word-play are underscored by a few of his own ‘riddims’, as well as notable preexisting roots-reggae ‘riddims’.
