Ciarra Black is a U.S. producer and DJ based in Berlin. Born in New Jersey, her initial tastes were informed by the local music scene in neighboring Philadelphia, attending punk, noise and dance music events from a young age. It was there she formed the duo Appetite with Jane Chardiet (Ascetic House) and began DJing at local underground dance venues. She moved to New York in 2012 and began her monthly event series “No-Tech,” which later developed into a label showcasing underground techno and experimental electronic producers from New York and throughout the U.S. After moving to Berlin in 2018 she has focused on live and DJ sets at venues throughout Europe, began a collaborative duo with sound artist Zoe McPherson called Carbon 96, and  released an EP in 2020 on her newly founded label Pendulum Recordings.

Refuge Worldwide ~ Signal Shift w/ Ciarra Black May 24 2022

We were very excited to host Exist Palestine, who hold their first-ever Berlin event at Oona Bar, Weserstr. 166 on Saturday, August 20th.

Exist is a festival and event series founded in Palestine, with the aim of building bridges between artists, musicians, DJs and curators from Palestine and across the globe. Its broad, transnational family are united in a desire to use art to impact their environments in critical ways, and through their engagement with anti-colonialism in the context of Palestine and beyond.

Exist Festival’s event at Refuge Worldwide will include DJ sets by Exist extended family members Ciarra Black, Dirar Kalash, Falyakon, Kujo, Oldyungmayn, Sainte Marina, No Plastic and the festival's co-founders Odai Masri and Bint Mbareh. 

There will also be two installations on-site at Oona: an audiovisual installation by Sarah Risheq titled if_the_archive_could_speak, exploring Palestinian physical and mental archives; and a sound piece by Dirar Kalash called To Exist In Sound, which draws from audio recordings of the 1948 Nakba and 1967 Naksa.

Ziúr has emerged as one of the world’s most striking and innovative electronic music producers in recent times, so it stands to reason that her DJ sets should be similarly wide-ranging. In this exclusive mix the Berlin-based artist covers a huge amount of sonic ground. Beginning with Nancy Wilson’s soulful ‘(You Don't Know) How Glad I Am’, @ziurziurziur then zips between deconstructed club tracks, driving rhythms from Nyege Nyege Tapes, ambient music, artful electronic composition, leftfield dancehall and much more besides across the mix’s near-hour-long runtime. All of this stylistic hot-footing could make for a disparate set of tracks, but in Ziúr's hands they come to form a composite whole, one that is alien and futuristic yet also deeply emotional.

UNIZONE: ALEXMALISM [s02e10] 𝖑𝖎𝖛𝖊 𝖘𝖊𝖙

It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing - or refusing - to fit the patriarchal, neoliberalist mould we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. We discover that the stability we were instructed to obtain whether it be financial, political or ecological, is fleeting, if at all. The resulting anxiety is an instrument of neoliberalism that prevents many of us from being able to raise consciousness of the structural injustices that alienate us.

In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Barad teaches us that the world is a dynamic process of intra-activity and materialisation, an ongoing ebb and flow of agency. The Buddhist Law of Impermanence proves that nothing in this world is eternal. Regardless of ones point of reference we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

Each month we invite an artist to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate modes of existence that escape hetero- patriarchal systems of oppression.

This month we have invited @floating-spectrum to respond to this concept.
