A one-hour selection by @nicolas-jaar aired first on May 15th, 2021 as part of the Sonic Liberation Front on @radioalhara, an initiative for Palestine by a group of audio platforms and sound artists who came together to unify their sound for Palestine and protest against the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.

Thank you for inviting me to be here today. 

These are difficult days and it is difficult to express the feelings that I have inside. 

We have seen the horrors of Israeli occupation. We have seen the hypocrisy of the European and American media. We have heard the silence of our peers. And we have felt the screams inside Al Aqsa, in Sheikh Jarrah, in Gaza, in Haifa, in Jaffa, in Lydda. But this is only news to those who don't know. 
In reality, this is nothing new. 

The past 2 weeks have been a microcosm for the past 20 years, the past 40 years years, the past 70 years. 

The Israeli government is a racist settler colonial project committed to the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. The legacies of systemic violence, racism and dispossession shaped by colonialism must stop. 

Today this means standing up and signaling clearly our support, our solidarity and our love for Palestine. Complicity with Israeli war crimes is found in silence and we cannot tolerate silence. 

As I speak something else is happening in another part of the world that is also very close to my heart. Chileans are right now electing  155 citizens who will write a new constitution for the country. It will replace the constitution that has been in place since the years of the military dictatorship. This constitution will be the first anywhere in the world to be written by an equal number of men and women. The only reason this moment of hope is possible in Chile is because of the incredible social movements that rose up to tell truth to power, to tell the story of life in the face of death. 
The courage and determination of Chilean activists, writers, artists has been astounding. I am sure many of them are inspired and influenced by the courage of Palestinians living under occupation. 

These social movements are creating change, and the forces of Empire are having a difficult time trying to control this change. When we see Israel bombing the tower that houses AP and Al Jazeera in Gaza, we understand that this war is being waged on multiple fronts. Journalism is one of them. Art and music is also one. 

So thank you for this initiative Radio Alhara and Recordat.

The Arab world back in the 70s and 80s gave us quite a few very interesting rock and pop acts. Ahmed Fakroun from Libya was THE one of them.
Here we have his 1983 album whose title means "Love Words" in English. And in fact his kind of ethno pop seems to go deeper than just to the charts where a song like "Soleil! Soleil!" - a typical yet outstanding synthie pop / new wave anthem that would have gone well with David Bowie or Duran Duran in the early 80s - definitely would have belonged. Other tunes are more Oriental with great string arrangements and those mystical melodies only Arab and Oriental music provides. It goes forth and back with these elements. "Mots d'amour" is a rather colorful affair, when it comes to 80s pop music and within the fine arrangements you will find a lot of solid handcraft from the instrumental section. Whoever worked with Ahmed Fakroun in the studio during the album production shall be praised and blessed for his talent as well. All in all this is one of the lost gems of 80s pop music which fetches prices up to 500,00 Euros for a nearly mint copy today. So fans of cool 80s pop with a memorable edge are now able to grab a copy of this forgotten jewel. Compared to many European releases from that year, "Mots d'Amour" can easily match up with all of them and has several outstanding evergreens on board. The sound is perfect for the time as well. So grab a copy of the reissue and make your dance party go crazy with this fascinating guy from Libya. Watch out for more fantastic releases of Ahmed Fakroun, published and distributed by PMG!
