Gatecrasher 2000 reunion mix - TC

An absolute honor to be invited to play the opening set for the legendary Sasha, at one of the best clubs in Brooklyn.  Held down the main room for a little over 4 hours.  Not many DJs in my position in NY have had the opportunity to do this, so I am very grateful to have the experience, as it is something I have been waiting patiently for.  Got the chance to push the envelope just a bit, and hand it off to Sasha to take it over into the later (or early) morning hours.  

For me, there is something very special about starting off a club night and witnessing the club slowly fill up, as the people gradually loosen up and get into their zones on the dance-floor as the night takes off.  It''s definitely one of my favorite things to watch and experience as a DJ, looking out into the crowd, and experiencing that at Output was certainly something memorable for me.

Thanks to Brad Miller and the Output team for inviting me to play and having me back once again.  Thanks to everyone who came out to hear me play and showed support.  Was quite delightful to see so many familiar faces in the sea of hungry clubbers.

‘What if the headliner doesn’t show up and you have to play the whole night??’  

I’ve played many opening/warm-up sets in my ‘moonlighting as a DJ’ career over the years, here in NY.  Over these years, I’ve found a system that works for me (and still stick by it) on how I prepare, and it all depends on who I am gonna to be opening for.  This way I can properly prepare, most importantly, the music I need for just the right level of energy I can reach, if I decide to take that route, without outshining the headliner.

Another thing I prep for is this ‘what if?’  So as I get myself prepared for the opening, I always make sure I throw in more than enough music in case this ‘what if’ comes true and the headliner actually does not make it, for whatever the reason, because that shit happens.  But, it has never happened to me..until now.

July 6th, I was scheduled to play an opening set for a specific Drumcode artist, in Atlanta.  I had prepped music appropriate for the night as it was the first time I was going to play a set geared towards an artist who dwells more in the techno realm….and that is not my usual go to style as many of you may know.   After a few stressful hours between the promoters and managers and the headliner dealing with delayed flights, I was told that the main act was not going to be able to make the gig.

At 10:30pm the promoter came up to me and said ‘Rory, the headliner isn’t gonna make it.  The night is yours.  Do what you can til closing.’  At this point (as slight panic set in for 9 seconds), I immediately thought I had to shift my set towards me….me as a DJ, the style I depict…the style a lot of you out there know me for. 

For longer sets, I like to go in with some sort of structure on how I can build the set and construct a full journey, but this one was special and impromptu.  

Here is my first ever ‘open-to close’ set - groovy…moody….raw…structured as it was happening.  This is where the night and the people that experienced it led me.

Thanks to Atlanta and the Substance crew for having me back once again, and to everyone who made it out on this night.  It is another night I’ll never forget.  As long as I have been doing this, I learned a lot about myself as a DJ.  Hopefully one day, I will be able to do an OTC right here in my hometown of Brooklyn..

Substance: Blackout - Rory James @ The Music Room (ATL) - Open to Close 07 06 18

Hey guys, i got around to uploading my all vinyl 'live' set in it's entire, original form, direct from the club speakers from the Trance Classics night @ National Underground on May 4th 2012.  I said before, that it has been a long time dream of mine to play a trance classics party, ever since I slowly watched all my old vinyl trance gems morph their way into the 'classics' category.  Zack Roth and the Sub Mission crew have made this possible for me, and to make it even better, this was recorded 'live' to encompass the crowd noise and vibe of the club - the way it was meant to be!  For this, I am forever grateful, and it couldn't have been any more perfect so thank you to you guys!

This is roughly a 3 hour set filled with a handful of some of the greatest trance records ever created from the years of 1997 to 2004.  Paul van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, The Thrillseekers, Oliver Lieb, Above & Beyond, M.I.K.E., Airwave, Solarstone, etc etc are all names synonymous with classic trance, and of course, are included in this live classics mix.  At the exact start of the mix, I am mixing out of Zack Roth's last track which was 'Rank 1 - Airwave', into my opening track of 'Paul van Dyk - Another Way'.  Since this is an all vinyl set, please have some patience for a few record skips, needle jumps, loop repeats, snaps, crackles, and pops haha!

At the 1 hour and 49 minute (1:49:00) mark, Frank Chiarello makes his second appearance of the night (after opening things up lovely back to back with Ryan Tyas in the beginning of the night) to finish the night off with me with some back to back techno and tech trance action.  Again, I would like to give a shootout to the Sub Mission crew, and everyone who made this event possible.  This was def a night to remember for me and I am sure as hell it was a night that many who attended will also remember!  Entire tracklist below!  Enjoy The Journey….

Rory James @ The National Underground (All vinyl set)-Trance Classics Night 5/4/12 (NYC)

As a follow up to one of my last status posts on FB at the end of 2018 regarding Output’s closing, here is one of my last recorded sets in the building.

April 2018, I played an all vinyl set in Halcyon The Shop @ 74 Wythe here in Brooklyn (for those that don’t know, Halcyon was the record store inside of the club).  A mix of all kinds of shit ranging from more recent sounds to the older gems and a few classics - a compilation of various styles I was exposed to throughout my years of clubbing and learning.  Older S&D and GU heads would really appreciate this one, as their is a lot of that BEEFY prog-house from back in the day (among other sounds).

Here is last Friday's recording of pretty much the full 3 hour set as I started it a little late. A bit of a dirty recording - some of the hard settings on the recorder must have gotten shifted in my travels but it was meant to be. The dance floor didn’t let up for the entire duration and what a pleasure it was to look out into the crowd and see nothing but pure bliss. I completely lost track of time towards the end of the set and didn’t get the chance to properly wind down the energy for the closing moments, but still managed to think fast for a memorable ending. Big shoutout to those last 30 to 40 people who didn’t want to go home!

A mix of light, dark, grit, perfection, mistakes and mishaps, highs, lows…a journey..in all it’s ugliness and beauty..

Institution_YWG, thank you so much for continuing to make my dreams into reality. DJs, If you ever get the chance to work with the Institution_YWG team, you are very lucky. A hell of an experience.
