Detroit dance music thrives on intergenerational connections. In the late '70s and early '80s, the late Ken Collier mixed disco, soul and early electronic dance music in eye-opening DJ sets that left a mark on up-and-coming artists like Delano Smith. Once Smith established himself in the city's explosive techno community, he, in turn, influenced soon-to-be legends like Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Jeff Mills, Norm Talley, Mike "Agent X" Clarke and others.

Now an elder statesman, Smith is etched into our history books as a crucial contributor to Detroit dance music, both house and techno. He's known especially for the Detroit beatdown sound he pioneered alongside Talley and Clark—slower, sexier records than what Detroit techno is generally associated for. (The trio even put out an RA Podcast under the name in 2010.) 

It's more recently that Smith has become known as a producer. He started his own label, Mixmode Recordings, and became a regular on Berlin imprint Sushitech, where he released many of his albums, including the jazzy deep house masterclass An Odyssey. His style has evolved over the years to incorporate ambient, dub and more contemporary techno influences.

More recently, Smith's career has been sidelined by an ongoing battle with a rare and untreatable form of cancer. He's hosted livestreams throughout his ordeal to keep in touch with his fans. His RA Podcast, which he calls his "Legacy Mix," is a celebration of his favourite sounds: euphoric chords, jacking drums and deep-space melodies, the elements that have and will continue to reverberate through Detroit and beyond. It also marks the beginning of a more hopeful period for Smith, as he gets ready to travel again, especially with his Legacy Detroit series, which celebrates the lineage he's an indelible part of, and always will be.

Over the last while Leeon has been making moves having appeared on the acclaimed Beats In Space alongside Tim Sweeney as well as dropping mixes on The Bunker NYC not forgetting spinning a lengthy one in Berlin's famous clubbing institution Berghain.

For the next interpretation of Far Blue, we have Belgium's Kim Kenis who has carefully weaved together a selection of tracks that represents a more clubby perspective of the concept. Recollecting dance moves. The podcast was made so you could move, as the set was recorded on Kim's home setup when she came back from a night out in Amsterdam. The mood was there, the flow as well. 

We are very much looking forward to having Kim and her flow over on the 24th of May for Pintai x Far Blue at Borisov, but for now we'll be enjoying this glimpse of what's to come.

With the mix, the German duo tells the story of a couple who slowly wake up from a dream-like state where everything was fine and realize that it's not working anymore. As the discussions become more intense and end in arguments, they break up and decide to go in different directions and move on, but not without continuing to appreciate each other.

Firstly, thanks to Dj wiggles for the opportunity to contribute to the Kinetic series <3

The mix is experimental and long-form, exploring ambient meditative selections as well as darker bass-heavy and textured tracks from across the bpm spectrum, with several tracks warped far from their original bpm. The pace, mood and energy fluctuate. Some tracks emerge quickly, like intrusive thoughts or distractions, others are  given more time to breathe merging into the mix more subtly. This reflects the often unpredictable and challenging nature of losing and regaining a sense of presence and control. The mix has a symbolic cyclical nature, returning to particular percussive sounds and motifs as it progresses. 

Many philosophies motivate me to DJ including the belief everything is connected to the collective and sound exists at that intersection, it is a universally connecting force that exists at the boundaries where mind and body meet the world. All creative practices are intrinsically informed by the personal experiences of their creator/s. This imbues them with narrative and gives them the potential for human connection at these boundaries. 

The title of the mix “decompression” alludes to the pursuit of emotive release. It is a response to life at present - from harrowing world events, to personal challenges and introspection. I hope people enjoy and connect with it, perhaps finding some peace of mind by its end.

𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐮𝐬 𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭?
I started the Fortune Sessions nights in 2019. Before then I threw a lot of house parties. When I had to move into a house unsuitable for big gatherings I began looking for a venue. 

The Fortune of War is a venue located on Brighton beach. It has an intimate dance floor space indoors for winter events and then a big outdoor space for parties in summer. It’s well-loved by locals, with a friendly and laid-back vibe. For a grassroots night it felt like the perfect fit. 

The first session went well but then Covid hit just before the second event was due to happen. I was disappointed but it gave me time to develop the aim and concept behind the events. I also acquired a better sound system to power them. The second session finally took place in March 2022 and two years on I’m preparing for the 15th!

The Fortune Sessions have always had a multi-genre format with a commitment to diversity behind the decks, and a low-key unpretentious vibe. The venue being a pub rather than a club means that the events draw a crowd of dedicated ravers as well as people just out for a good time. Not everyone who enjoys dance music vibes with the club environment, so I’m glad to be able to platform niche genres in an unintimidating space to a wider audience. The nights being free entry also means its more accessible, giving the opportunity for new musical discovery. On a few occasions I’ve been asked “what IS this music??” by people on the dancefloor.

The sprawling canopy of the banyan tree, with its aerial roots reaching down to the earth, symbolizes the diverse landscape of my musical exploration within this mixtape. Much like the banyan's ability to thrive in various environments, from dense forests to urban landscapes, my mixtape traverses through a multitude of electronic music genres. From the deep, atmospheric beginnings reminiscent of the shaded undergrowth to the vibrant crescendos akin to sunlit clearings, the mixtape mirrors the adaptability and resilience of the banyan tree.
