In light of the ongoing student protests in South Africa, on Saturday the 24th of September a group of academics from The University of Johannesburg and The University of the Witwatersrand hosted a public meeting to address the funding crisis in South African Universities.

The meeting invited students, parents and workers to engage in a dialogue to chart the way forward to the student movement's goals of free tertiary education. 

The meeting targeted the South African government as the main culprit in chronically underfunding higher education, resulting in universities pushing up their fees every year beyond inflation and putting unjust financial strain on students.

The speakers were Salim Vally, Patrick Bond, and Deliwe Mzobe, amongst others.

With our brilliant guest Nozizwe Dube, a law student who lived half of her life in Simbabwe, we compare how schools in Simbabwe, France and Austria are organized around race. We unpack how rooting out people of color to serve white interest is a global phenomenon and how colonial structures continue to be powerful  in education.  
Nozizwe is providing us with insight about the importance of universities in the process of decolonizing the mind and what it takes to decolonize academic institutions in the framework of her inclusion project "Undivided" on her campus at Leuven's university.

Welcome to the first episode of season 1 of Nozizwe delves into. 

In today's episode, I'll be delving into the coronavirus global pandemic.  This global pandemic is very political, as with everything that happens on the planet. 

As several countries took extensive lockdown measures due to the virus, some influential people spoke of how this pandemic was an equalizer as we were all in the same boat and would be impacted the same way.  I did not agree. A global pandemic can't be an equalizer in an already unequal society. If anything, this global pandemic will exacerbate pre-existing inequalities.   

So I'll be delving into how the coronavirus global pandemic is in no way an equalizer. And I'll be having this conversation with an amazing guest and friend, Sarah.  Sarah is a communication professional and a podcast host. Born and raised in France, she spent a few years in Singapore before moving to Brussels around 3 years ago.   She co-created and co-produced ‘Vocal About It’ - a podcast that celebrates Black women and women of color in Europe, provides positive representation, goes against racist stereotypes and normalises their presence.   Sarah is engaged in different forms of activism related to gender equality, youth education, anti-racism and intersectional feminism. She spent 2 years as a Youth Ambassador for UN Women in Singapore, hosted workshops on intersectional feminism and anti-racism for feminist association Period* and hosted various workshops on podcast creation.

Lighting Up (Dia De Los Muertos) is taken from the 5 track DARK HOURS EP which is available now from all digital outlets. It plays like a Day of the Dead parade via a truth or dare game of Russian Roulette. It's a nostalgic tune that's big on hooks. Produced by the legend that is Gavin Monaghan at Magic Garden Studios in Wolverhampton and recorded 3rd October 2020 on a wet and cold day. 

Track trivia : The tambourine that you can make out low in the mix used to belong to T-Rex front man Marc Bolan.

The rest of the EP was produced by Joe Chalmers (aka PUKK) at his bedroom studio (better known as the House of Blews) using a £10 acoustic guitar from local ads, a Windows 7laptop that boots every 9th attempt and free software. It's about as DIY as it gets. Even the cover art was made on a phone using free apps and some imagination.
