According to Roy Murad, you should insist on complete transparency before entering to any type of business deal.

As in life, the first impression you make in any business interaction dictates your future success. Make no mistake about it, you are creating a lasting impression with that first handshake and first exchange and there will be a judgment made on your abilities with that first look. Make sure you do everything in your power to set yourself up for success because it is extremely hard to change first impressions. Worse yet, you may not get the chance to make a second impression.

While it may sound superficial, that first impression often starts with how you present yourself and your manner of attire.

Say you are meeting with the owner of an up-and-coming jazz bar; would you wear a full Armani suit? On the flip-side, you are meeting with the president of international affairs for a large sales company; would you wear jeans and a t-shirt? The answer in both cases should be “NO.”

“Whenever I went to a meeting, I reflected the culture of that business to allow for an easier interaction,” says Roy Murad. “I did my best to portray the image that those I was meeting with would be most comfortable. For example, when I met with bankers, I always wore a blue suit and red tie. It automatically made those in that meeting more comfortable because I was reflecting back their culture. It starts with knowing your audience.”
