"The Emeralds", from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, recorded a polka-inspired version of the song. The album "Bird Dance" went double-platinum in Canada, and gold in Australia. The song also contributed to the success of multiple gold albums for the Emeralds in 1983 and 1984. The song went on to further fame when it was used in two movies: John Paizs's cult classic Crime Wave, and Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and it was also used in the Only Fools and Horses episode The Unlucky Winner Is.... A remix was also released by the Belgian band Brussels Sound Revolution in 1990.

Founded in 1972 Helping Hand Music Ltd, now known as Royalty Music Publishing Inc, was the first wholly owned Canadian music publishing company from western Canada to be invited to join the Canadian Music Publishers Association.  The song publishing company now holds administration or copyright ownership on a significant catalogue of music of mainly western Canada based writers.
