 In this episode, Rafay Alam, an environmental lawyer and activist in Lahore, Pakistan, speaks about the social and economic challenges the government faces in addressing endemic environmental issues. Much of the conversation revolves around problems with poverty and access to natural resources, and how Pakistan's national identity is defined by the Indus River. Rafay also tells the story of starting Critical Mass Lahore, a bicycling advocacy group and how, person by person, it is changing people's lives.

Cédric Villani won the prestigious Fields Medal for his work in 2010.  He wrote a book about his experience called Birth of a Theorem: A Mathematical Adventure. It is a book about where ideas come from. There is something spider like about Villani, and I say that not just because of the pins he is famous for always wearing. He knows how to catch ideas, and he wants to teach us how as well. We also talk with Maria Popova about another great Science book: The art of Scientific Investigation. Academy Discourse - Count Dracula and Bram Stoker

Terry Eagleton was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He has been a Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge and was formerly Thomas Warton Professor of English in the University of Oxford. He is presently Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Universities of Lancaster and Notre Dame, and a Fellow of the British Academy. He is the author of over forty works of literary, cultural and political criticism, which include studies of Irish history and culture such as Heathcliff and the Great Hunger. He has also written plays which have been staged in Ireland and Britain, including Saint Oscar, and a novel about Ireland entitled Saints and Scholars.

The lecture considered Bram Stoker’s Dracula in the context of some traditional notions of evil, including the very different presentation of the idea of evil in Flann O’Brien’s The Third Policeman. It also raised the question of Stoker’s Irish Protestant background and its relevance to his fiction.
