Consumerism is a track coming out on the eve of Ms. Hill's release. She wanted to get this music out while she was incarcerated, as it is a product of the space she was in while she was going through some of the challenges she has been faced with recently.

We did our best to eek out a mix via verbal and emailed direction, thanks to the crew of surrogate ears on the other side. Letters From Exile is material written from a certain space, in a certain place. I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it. I haven't been able to watch the news too much recently, so I'm not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn't imagine it not being relevant. Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking it's level."

Dix shuttles Pratt's classic blues phrasing and alcohol soaked voice into a landscape of skittering rhythms, grand melodies, and distopian bass. The EP is comprised four epic songs, each more interesting than the next, and a hauntingly beautiful interlude in two parts, titled "Ode to the Modern Man". Best known for his hard hitting remix of Bomba Estereo's  "La Boquilla" which was featured in the film Limitless, starring Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper, Dix takes a left turn and delivers a truly satisfying and beautiful record that is equally at suited for a huge sound system, ipod, or home listening.

When asked about minstrel shows and the like, most people think of America in the 19th century, lampooning blacks in disparaging ways. Some recall traveling horse and buggy teams peddling miracle medications and other products. Yet others go back even further to the professional entertainer of 12th and 17 century: The juggler, acrobat, storyteller, secular musician and instrumentalist. But I will tell you a tale of magnanimous proportion that will expose the true origin of the minstrel.

See, the minstrel is older than time, for the minstrel is time and timekeeper. Let us examine time: “the Swiss manufacture it, the French hoard it, Italians squander it, Americans say it is money and the Hindus say it does not exist…” Replace the word time with God or the Devil and you would probably find the same attitude from each of the respective cultures. These Archetypes (Time, God & the Devil), these icons and symbols are all gifts from the “MINSTREL”, for he is the Great storyteller, the first storyteller, who sang the world into existence. Go to Africa now and you will see him sitting there in a cool earthen room pounding his rhythm out on a gimbrie singing his story, the oral tradition.
