Such is the motto and ethos of Melbournes newest and most invigorating musical collective, Freak Technique. Comprising musicians from a range of disciplines and backgrounds, and drawing from a deep pool of influences such as Fat Freddies Drop, Crazy Penis, Groove Armada, The Greenskeepers and Pnau, Freak Technique has catapulted onto stages across town with a sound truly origional in Melbournes Current Dance music scene.
Reaching beyond the realm of the traditional instrumental based line-up, and even further past the conventional club and dance floor vibe, the ensemble presented by Freak Technique contains a spectacularly organic cohesion – unsurprisingly, considering its talented roll call of artists.

Melbourne House Producers and Djs Fergus and Craig Pringle form the production behind the band. With both having had multiple releases on respected house labels worldwide, including Greenhouse, Prozent, Smashbang and Midwest Hustle, Fergus and Pringles stand out production skills, coupled with their innate ability to collaborate, has resulted in a firm a backbone of jackin’ beats, bad assed bass and sampled delights. Perfectly complimenting the vocal and instrumental cast they are surrounded by, this duo is unstoppably mutable in a live environment, their many years of pleasing crowds as DJs seamlessly translating to the live arena.

As a rising star as a soloist performer, guitarist and vocalist Jame Forbes bring his own brand of soulful roots to the evolving collective. Returning to Melbourne after five years as a solid fixture on the live music scene in Capetown, South Africa, He has been delighting audiences with his sessions at Veludos, World Bar and other hot spots around the Melbourne, his folk-acoustic, post-rock stringed rhythms, and down to earth, punchy lyrics perfectly compliment and punctuate the flow of the 'Techniques creations.

No stranger to the band scene, Kathy Hinch cements an inimitable equilibrium within the vocal section with her versatile, and uniquely luscious, tones. With her VCA Jazz background, lead singer kudos from afro-beat funk/pop band Keshie and with her new foray into the realms of Eryka Badu and Jill Scott influenced song writing in her newly formed Kathy Hinch Band, she is uniquely placed to add yet another eclectic facet to the overall body and tone of Freak Techniques work.

Percussionist, flutist and backup vocalist Jay Petch helps round out the ‘Techniques tightly interwoven dynamic, consistently delivering a veritable menagerie of sound across the stage. As a member of Melbourne’s kings of underground dance music Smash Bang, Jay also plays alongside some of Melbourne’s leading DJs, and is no stranger to the various manifestations of funk - adding his own special brand of groove to an already burgeoning mix.

Completing the fray, Sammy Sturgess brings a brazen wind to the band. With his styling saxophone whipping up a frenzy riffs, Sammy throws more than just a little funk into the group. Hailing from the more sunny climes of Brisbane, Sammy led the eight piece funk band Gorgonzola through four tours, and four CD releases before settling in Melbourne in 2005. From there, he founded funk band The Grand Bizarre and has been DJing under his solo moniker Vinyl Itchy on a weekly basis around the city, both in clubs and in regular slots on radio station Kiss FM. As the founding director of production, management and artist agency Make Believe Music, Sammy’s head for musical structure is matched only by his soulful tone.

Together, the dynamo that is Freak Technique has found a way to meld its member’s wide range of disparate influences and styles into a unique sound, one that is constantly challenging the often niche-strapped ideas of modern song writing. In true chameleon fashion, they are a rarity amongst the wash of bands found on today’s stages - formulating and performing musical entendre's with the ability to transcend and blur the lines between house, chill, jazz, roots and out right jacking dance floor grooves.

Somewhat definitively, Freak Technique can be summed up by their possession of those rarest of gifts - the sounds, style and sheer funkiness that only this 21st Century could have ever provided.

Fergus wears many hats in the Melbourne electronic music scene, from Label Manager at Long running institution Smash Bang Records and as a mentor to its roster of up and coming artists, Through to one half of Live Tech house outfit Oddphonic who have had a string of successful releases in Australia and overseas and smashed dancefloors both in Melbournes clubs and festivals. As a solo artist and DJ, Fergus has shown to be an extremely prolific producer appearing on over 50 releases with both original works and remixes, on highly regarded underground house labels all over the world including Greenhouse, Chicago House FM, and Sonny Fodera's label Beatdown, as well as having one original tune and a remix on Mark Farinas Compilation Greenhouse Construction. He has also been supported and played by legends of the Genre including Mark Farina, DJ Sneak and Derrick Carter. Currently working on an Album of Downtempo Electronica with a series of gust vocalists, the releases will keep on coming.

Darkness has advanced his DJ career more and more over the past 3 years in the Melbourne clubbing scene. Throughout his high school years, Darkness had developed a deep passion for music, being influenced by his jazz motown and rock musical upbringing which has put a unique sound signature on his spin.

With his funky underground electro beats and sweet collision of house and RnB, Darkness has moved and grooved crowds in clubs all over Melbourne. When listening to the versatile but selective musical range; he can play any genre within electro, house & RnB music while still keeping it deep.

With such a broad genre of musical influences, Darkness has really set the individuality for his music and the bar high for competing DJ’s, making his mark on some of Melbourne’s most prestigious and popular clubs such as Korova, Circus, Wah Wah, Jett Black, White Charlie, Qbar, Ocean Blue, Exchange Hotel, Somewhere On Chapel & Silk Road

Darkness is definitely on Melbourne’s forefront to being one of the most highly regarded and unique DJ’s around. All this, combined with his fierce passion, talent and determination makes Darkness the new musical spice of life and force not to be reckoned with!

Combining Fergus's taste for a rich jack'n funk filled house sound, and the forward thinking chug of Craigs rolling techno influences ignite, indulge & amp; re-calibrate the soul. In their live sets these blokes have humbled and stylized such a unique, trusting cutting edge nest of flavors, with a healthy kick and silk sown synthesizers, this music doesn't grow on trees... but it grows on you as it manifests being played within the trees at an Australian bush gathering. These guys have sealed and delivered your sine wave &amp; feel the wivver to high fortresses... Lock in and get ya sonic shoes on and enjoy this truly Oddphonic experience.




Follow Bill and The Jerks to a better place. a 5 member band with a variety of different styles including but not limited to, Blues, Psychedelic, Funk, Hip Hop, Rock and Jazz. Known more for their eclectic, energetic, fog machined laser lighted shows, Bill and The Jerks bust out fun in more than one medium. After finding each other at various music schools, Bill, Alex, Ian, Micky and Mason finally got together and jammed around mid July 2011, one month later they were on stage and since then have gigged nearly every week with people always calling for more. So far only 5 demo songs and a live improv jam have been recorded properly, and since Bill and The Jerks don't play music for the money they thought the people needed to hear their songs. So if you like any of these songs let them know. Give them some feedback, constructive critisism or just insult the shit out of them its all cool... it's just how they roll
