Collateral Intelligence's Butterflies In Funerals is widescreen, sometimes dark, often hopeful electronica with one eye on the stars, but grounded in the sheer cathartic necessity of its creation.

The new moniker from Maltese wunderkind Neil "Acidulant" Hales, the album was formed during a turbulent period in the artist's life, when his father was seriously ill in hospital. Butterflies in Funerals is his way of expressing the complexity of emotion he was going through at the time.

"To me it all looked like a very dark movie," he says. "That's why the tracks are are at times cold or have a sad, emotional, or hopeful feeling."

Drawing on his impressive background in acid house and electro – with releases on Balkan Vinyl and Jack Trax – the album takes in mutant breakbeat, battle-scarred ambient, and tripped out 303 grooves, but pushes his sound further and deeper than ever before.

The album cover features specially designed artwork by rising star Fei Meng, who will be exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists later this year.

So in 2021 join Collateral Intelligence on a journey into the recesses of the soul, and emerge, purified, and ready for the rest of the trip.

Pat Hyland Selections Label Mix May 2021

The last mix of the Spring Series comes from a selector who's mixes we've been loving over the last few months of lockdown - Evan Magee.

Based in Dublin, Evan is steadily becoming a familiar name in the local scene. With recent features on Hidden Agenda Club and Dublin Digital Radio, Evan has showcased his depth of selections and styles through his increasingly growing mix portfolio. As clubs are open, his sets typically consist of a combination of percussive rhythms, 4/4 grooves, and high paced breakbeats. Seamlessly threading them all together with his own eclectic style.

For this mix, Evan has put together a dancefloor ready combination of breaks, UK techno, and trance. It's high energy and carries momentum right to the finish. This one is not to be missed.

For the inaugural episode of the 'Darkroom Presents' podcast series, we're delighted to host a fantastic mix by Suddi Raval. 

There's not much that Suddi doesn't know about electronic music, he's literally written the book about it, with his highly successful 'A Brief History of Acid House.' As part of 'Together', he released 'Hardcore Uproar' in 1990 which smashed warehouses and clubs across the country. Now releasing EPs under his own name, this mix features, for the most part, both new and currently unreleased  tracks which champion his unique, space aged electro sound.
