There is nothing wrong with you because you are different. Everyone is different.

We do not have to be homogeneous; we do not have to be the same. There is distance and difference between even the closest of human beings. We do not have to walk the same path to share the same vision: that all view points are valuable; except for hate, which is not a viewpoint at all but a dark glass some people see through… losing all clarity and beauty.

We do not need to stand above someone. We can stand side by side and not be in each other’s shade…so that we all receive the same amount of sunlight. 

Two great things we can do in life: Have the courage to be yourself, your unique self and embrace what is different about you; and the second thing is to embrace what is different about everyone else …what is their unique contribution to the world?  (And maybe doing the second will only come from doing the first. Maybe you can’t accept everyone else’s differences unless you accept your own). 

Every power struggle, abuse, and essentially all inequity in the world is related. We need to solve the inequities in our own lives in order to impact the world’s inequities and essentially set a good example so that others will follow, not you; but your behaviour, by making changes on their own.

Differences are very important. We need them to understand things…without differences we cannot compare, understand, and get perspective. We wouldn’t even have a concept of time without differences! Differences create understanding if we embrace them and only difference can create change and growth…the concepts of change and growth are also not possible without differences! 

The ironic thing is that humans sometimes think that rejecting differences and striving to be the same will create unity. But the opposite is true: only through accepting all our differences and celebrating them can we truly unite and move forward.

Hello… so have you ever noticed certain things about yourself that never change? This song, ‘Just Like I Always Do’ is about that very thing. I found myself  outside the other day, playing with rivulets of snow melt. Making channels with a rake, for the water to run down and I laughed… my feet were soaking wet and I was having a grand old time. Reminded me of a time in kindergarten, when I arrived late to school, soaked to the bone, as I was playing in the rain along the way. So that playful side of me has not changed at all. I also noticed, like flowing water, how vital it is for me to keep moving. A fluidity when it comes to living and learning about life. Recently, singing has been like that for me. Bear with me on this. A little backstory: As a kid, I had a brief stint in my middle school choir. I did not want to join the choir, that’s for sure. The music teacher had picked us out, after brief singing auditions. After our first performance, my mother, God rest her soul, told me I did not have to go back to choir anymore, if I did not want to. Out of the 50 kids on stage, I was the only one not singing. I just looked down so no one could see my mouth… except my eagle-eyed mom. Simple as that, I was done with it. There were other things I wanted to do as a precociously rebellious kid, running around the neighborhood, as it were. Now, half a century later, I have been learning to sing on my own. It has not been easy uncovering that latent voice of mine. Looking back, sometimes I wish I had stuck with it as a kid. So about a decade or so ago, this dude I worked with asked me if I’d show him some stuff on guitar. His mom was a musician and music teacher and he grew up with music in his life. He was always singing and playing guitar. As we hung out, he noticed I never sang and asked me why. After basically dodging his question, he told me the only thing stopping me from singing was me. Talk about a hard lesson to swallow. So now, bringing us up to speed, I had some fun exploring my nascent singing voice on this song. The image is of me and Garnet running the hills in early Spring. I found this little piece languishing on my long-neglected soundcloud account. I couldn't remember how to play it, and the files were long lost, so I had a go at transcribing it from the original, with deliberated variations...just for fun.
