"No one can tell you how to be an artist, because being an artist is being yourself. Anyone who says it's easy to be yourself is either lying or utterly blessed. It's incredibly hard to stay honest, positive and confident. I work every day, 15 hours a day, to make music my profession. I grasp. I fall. I fail. We all do. It takes a toll. I wrote this song because I am truly sorry for any time this journey has gotten between me an the one I love.

The accompanying video (youtu.be/j-ozE6tBL1U) was one shot and one take (just like life) on the Venice Pier at 5:25 am. If you watch beginning to end, you can actually see the light change as the sun rises throughout the 4 minute video. By the end, warm oranges have overtaken the blue greens. I wanted to shoot the video for this song in an infinite space, like wandering through a canvas. Miriam Wilson came up with the genius idea to film on the pier. It's a perfect visual for a journey, a path, born out of an infinite sea and driven toward an inevitable conclusion that we are sometimes afraid to pursue."

Autarkic makes-up part of an unspoken alliance from Tel-Aviv, which is currently altering the state of contemporary house and techno music. Heavy Dreamer, the artist’s first, four-track outing on Life and Death, showcases much of what this bold movement is about, all while pushing it forward into progress.  

Ever-present tones of kraut and punk rock flow throughout the EP, beginning with Some Things To Keep, a pumping, warehouse floor-filler. Autarkic steps up to the mic, often re-amping and distorting his vocal delivery, placing it alongside finely-programmed keyboard riffs, tough drums and further psychedelia. Realistic Guru, the trippiest of the lot, is tailor-made for an early-morning DJ Tennis after-party excursion. Slowing down the pace on Powerhouse, Autarkic hints at moments of Bauhaus’ and Tones on Tail’s doom-and-dance pop, while offering-up a digital-only, stripped-down, bonus version. The title track stands as a testament to this new wave of artists, coming from the shores of Israel’s Mediterranean coastline. Bass, drums and guitar are recorded through bespoke boxes and presented through the lens of modernist club-culture.

Channel Tres grew up in the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles. His voice is effortlessly deep, as if Barry White didn't realize he was Barry White. "Controller", Channel's debut single on Godmode (Yaeji, Shamir), took classic Detroit house and reimagined it with the surly attitude of West Coast rap. Pitchfork, NPR, Gorilla vs. Bear, BBC Radio 1, Spotify, Apple, and KCRW were early champions, along with Australia's esteemed Triple J radio, who put "Controller" in full rotation.

In advance of his self-titled debut EP (out July 27 on Godmode), Channel blesses us with "Jet Black", another taste of his unorthodox union of four-on-the-floor and Compton. The song is an oozy ode to the blackest of black, over a ferocious modular synth instrumental that takes cues from industrial and early electro. "I never reply when you hit me/ I'm off the grid you can't get me" – it's hard not to feel invincible when this one plays. The video, directed by cult filmmaker Anthony Sylvester, captures Compton at its most contorted, where barbershops double as churches, where liquor stores become after-hours raves.
