This piece is part of a trilogy of Americana, of which “Chuck, Get Well”, a musical convalescent card to a friend in Oregon has been performed by Jamie Crofts aka Jim Simm (with a more recent recording by him at https://soundcloud.com/david-m-hoyle/chuck-get-well-2020-recording).

Each piece adopts a type of minimalism: here, what might be described as “adulterated minimalism” – within a stream of almost continuous arpeggiation the material throws up references, intentional or chance, to other styles and periods, e.g. to the film composer, Bernard Herrmann’s “Vertigo chord”; the meter fluctuates in a non-systemic way, there are occasional sudden contrasts in dynamics, interchange of harmonic light and shade, and a quasi-familiar structure with extended coda emerges.

The piece was partly inspired by photographs of various Manhattan streets in extraordinary light and mist conditions by Richard Haughton.

This first performance was part of a recital given by Karen Kingsley at the Friends' Meeting House, Brighton on October 5th, 2024.
