Is dark funky back? Kaval is working hard to revive this more or less forgotten genre.

In contrast to the enthusiastic nature of most of the tracks in the main UK Funky genre, the darker sub-genre has a much more ominous atmosphere and more minimalist rhythms. Sometimes very Uk funky, sometimes close to grime, Uk techno, early dubstep or even hard drum. It's this side that I wanted to revive by concocting these tracks at different tempos.

Always using my usual process: MPC, Samples, Ragga-Dancehall vocals, Drums , texture & video game sfx!

For those of you who have been following the Délices du midi project since its inception, my passion for logos and characters will not seem insignificant.
I'm particularly fond of logos from the 80s, 90s and even the early 2000s. The logos of dancehall labels are particularly incredible, so I've put together a selection of some of my favourite logos and tracks.
1 h of anthems beat-matched as possible (over 16 bars) + dancehall FX special (air-horn,lasers,wheelz)

Given the number of logos in existence, a vol.2 mixtape is highly envisaged.

When I started buying my first UK Funky records, I was immediately hooked on this syncopated style with its aggressive, swaying snares. The first record was bought and found by chance in a “grime” bin in Paris during a trip with friends. It was Emvee's “Groove EP”. I already had some affinity with bass music, but I didn't yet know anything about the genre. 

There was a very danceable, enthusiastic side to most of the tracks, with lots of vocals and euphoric elements. But on the other hand, there was a much more worrying atmosphere and more minimalist rhythms on some tracks. Sometimes very Uk funky and sometimes close to grime, Uk techno, dubstep or even hard drum. It's this side that I wanted to revive when recording this mixtape with selected tracks released between 2008 and 2024. Some are big classics, others a little less well known...

So I asked Loofi to create a visual representing dark funky with a cartoonish edge and a Halloween theme, since October had arrived and autumn was starting to show its face.

To accompany the mix, I added a whole host of samples from video games, including : Luigi's Mansion, Silent Hill 2, Medievil but also other samples from my personal database.

Originally from Toulouse and a member of the Egregore collective, Kaval is known for his raw, percussive productions. His sound is rooted in the French bass scenes, with a focus on rhythm-heavy tracks that hit with intent.

A regular presence in Toulouse’s underground, Kaval has steadily released music through labels like Délices Du Midi and holds a residency at Ruff Club Tlse. His sets—often spanning tempos from 90 to 150 BPM—lean into system-ready blends that balance surprise and energy.

He’s also hosted the Lost Drums Show on Egregore Radio and contributed a guest mix on Rinse FM, with support from names like Pearson Sound, Skream, and DJ Python.

We’re genuinely happy to have him on Cellar Door—since first discovering his music on Bandcamp and catching his Rinse show, his tracks have been a steady fixture in our wishlist.

It's certainly one of my best recorded mixes. There were no imperatives, no obligations, no need to do this one. Just two afternoons, one to dig and one to record.

This mix transcribes my influences and my musical universe with enthusiasm. With lots of new tracks this time. 125 to 140 bpm.
