Recorded in just six days at Brighton Electric in September 2010, As The Spirit Wanes will be released in the UK on January 31st, 2011. Whilst from the outside last year has looked rosy for Codes In The Clouds with a remix album release, successful tours and festival slots, it’s also been a difficult year behind the scenes. Yet personal loss has proven a collective driving force, bringing the band closer as a group and shaping their surprisingly optimistic second offering:

“It’s not that the album has a set concept or theme, it’s just that each member of the band went through similar experiences around the same sort of time. So naturally, this is reflected in the album. We all feel really close to it, and it’s definitely the music we want to make. It’s a very personal record to us and we feel it’s a big step forward from the first release. The songs are definitely a better reflection of us as a collective of people. Hopefully others will identify with the ideas within the record and can relate it to their own experiences.” 

Co-produced by Erased Tapes initiator Robert Raths and label mate Ryan West, then mastered by Nils Frahm at his studio in Berlin, As The Spirit Wanes could almost be described as a family affair. Even the artwork has been inspired by the band’s time in Iceland, performing as part of the Erased Tapes label night at Iceland Airwaves 2010. Most importantly, it’s all about songs with As The Spirit Wanes offering its listener stunning melodies and razor-sharp hooks. From the Beach Boys pop appeal of Look Back, Look Up to the euphoric Washington, down to the emotionally charged two-minute hymn If I’d Have Known This Was The Last, Codes In The Clouds embody their genre in its most rewarding form.

“Rumour Cubes’ sound is a luminous re-imagining of very many constituent parts” (Louder than War). The London-based six-piece are a gathering swell of strings, electronics and layers of guitars, underpinned by a bass-infused rhythm. Formed in 2009, the band have since cut their own path, crafting music that is by turns melodic and abstract, raucous and reflective, joyful and melancholy.

The band’s two albums Appearances of Collections (2014) and The Narrow State (2012) draw on a wide range of instrumentation, influences and ideas, both packed with Rumour Cubes’ signature changes in pace, texture and form. Appearances of Collections has been described as “a far-reaching and fearless work, a dizzying instrumental adventure” (The Skinny), “music overflowing with a delicate, but nonetheless significant, passion” (Drowned in Sound) and “a labyrinth of vivacity, an album of beauty and transcendence that is meticulously crafted but holds no sense of rigidity, leaving plenty of room for wonder.” (Echoes and Dust).

Rumour Cubes’ performances are underpinned by their love of new technology. The band's live shows often feature mi.mu gloves (guitarist Adam Stark is part of the development team), which allow the wearer to manipulate sound using hand gestures, alongside a host of other technological elements, including joysticks, samplers, synths and a huge array of effects pedals, many of which are custom-built. Adam has also written custom software to synchronise videos to the band’s live performances, turning their shows into a multimedia experience.

Since their inception, the band have collaborated with poets, film-makers and a wide spectrum of other musicians. Collaborations with poet Steve Willey can be found on debut album track The Gove Curve and the 1871 / Letters To Palestine release; and Appearances of Collections includes contributions from 10 guest musicians. In 2013 Rumour Cubes played at Glastonbury, Village Green and Truck festivals alongside Sam Duckworth (Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly). The set at Glastonbury was Sunday's headline act on the Leftfield Stage, and was a live mixtape with artists including Billy Bragg, Kate Nash, Sweet Billy Pilgrim, Jehst, Riz MC and Grace Petrie.
