Why Wait

Peter Gabriel's 1986 classic hinted at the climate crisis our planet is facing. Continuing to pay tribute to artists who have been influential, running dog music paints a picture of a planet that is getting drenched and burning up at the same time. The goal is to create an homage to Peter Gabriel while at the same time updating Red Rain to our current moment.

I recorded my composition, Appamada, in this solo version during the recording of my quartet album, An Appropriate Response, in May 2015.  It's dedicated to my teachers.  In Pali, the word loosely translates as "to take care" and is thought to be the last word spoken by the Buddha - “Conditions are subject to decay, work out your salvation with care.”  

Stephen Batchelor talks about it this way:   it's (appamada) really more an ethical or moral perspective or sensibility, an intention which guides, directs, inspires, energizes and commits us to what it is that we consider to be good – wisdom, compassion, tolerance - all the virtues Buddhism encourages.  Asanga defines appamada as that which energetically cherishes the good and guards the mind against what gives rise to affliction.

This composition was composed for the modern dance company my wife and I run, Mikautadze Dance Theatre.

The music is scored for string quartet and small percussion ensemble.

It is based on the Fibonacci series, and the Golden Ratio. There are many hidden references to number sequence in the score. The most obvious reference is the length of the piece, 377 seconds, the 15th number in the sequence.

The piece has 3 main sections and coda.

running dog music is Tom Pile, veteran New York composer and multi-instrumentalist. Drawn from a combination of electronic and acoustic source material, the music spans a host of genres. No rules. If you like it, it's good music.
