Dear Liza

‘When I was fifteen, I had a high school boyfriend whose mother was a free-spirited, unconventional and lenient single parent who would often leave us unattended with her impressive collection of classic albums. Upon her departure we had a custom of randomly selecting an album and listening while we laid together on the sofa. One day we selected Joni Mitchell’s ‘Blue’, and in that moment, that voice and those chords, my passion for songwriting began. Her songs went straight to the marrow of my heart. When the flighty love between me and my high school boyfriend dissolved, and all the subsequent broken hearts that followed, Joni Mitchell was always there, inviting me to be sad but promising that life would go on. It’s in the memory of those assailable and heartsick moments I so often shared with Joni, that ‘Songs of Blue’ was written’. -Scarlett

This is a song about a vitriolic and heartbroken individual begrudgingly reminiscing over the memory of their ex-lover while drinking and listening to Joni MItchell's iconic album 'Blue'.

Downtempo indie soul/pop/folk ballad. 6/8 Tim signature. Nostalgic sound reminiscent of old motown ballads. Harmonic vocal hooks  and dreamy tenor Saxophone solo. Sorrowful lyrically content delves into personal struggles associated wth coming of age. The principle emotion at the heart of the song is one of longing. The song voices a pining to return to a time of girlish carelessness and imprudence.

Calls of Prudence

A plaintive acoustic heart-breaker with both sound and sentiment that echo in the cannon of classic 50's AM country radio. Safety Pin has deep country bona fides; weeping slide guitar and the melodic integrity and warmth of a Patsy Cline ballad.  The song showcases a more subdued side of Running Red Lights, stripping away the packaging and letting the contents of the delicately heartbreaking lyrics un-spool. The  unrelenting ache of living a life of loveless stagnation reverberates in Kevin Howley and Scarlett Flynn's tear-stained voices, packing a serious emotional wallop.

Flower in the Concrete is a warm and fuzzy, mid-tempo empowerment jam. The song's roots synthesize classic-country verve with dreamy soft rock. The saxophone accents are bright points on a towering constellation of misty vocals and shimmering synthesizers. Flower in the Concrete sets a celestial stoner tone that leaves you blissfully floating in the stars.

Mulberry Love

Isadora is yet another fresh sound for a band that has explored everything from classic 50’s AM country to 80’s darkwave. This time RRL takes a dive into the weird and wonderful world of pop psychedelia. The song opens intimately to a mesmerizing soft vocal and a Mellotron piano that sway back and forth like a cradle song.In the span of a few measures Isadora unpredictably unfurls over a fuzz guitar that rushes like water toward a technicolor collage of piano, electronics, Prince-styled harmonies and a distinct1967 Beatles influence. Isadora builds into an entrancing and amplifying interplay of orchestral instrumentation.It’s a fittingly cinematic escalation for a song about the uncomprehending power of collective human consciousness and universality. The melody sails and swells through the dreamy imagined world of Isadora before waking where it began, with a lullaby. The song closes with Scarlett’s voice softly passing on the sage and timely reminder that we are more alike than we are unalike and that everyone carries within them the possibility of a changed world.

This song did not make it onto "There's A Bluebird In My Heart" sadly. But we love it just the same and we will set it free at some point. And it will hopefully continue to be a favorite at the live shows!

Sour Grapes

Born into a space between the notes of Fleetwood Mac and the words of Sylvia Plath, we are Running Red Lights. Back in 2006 we were on our way to catch a train when we we fell into yesterday's sunset. Littered like paper over the road to nowhere we blew like tumbleweed into 2018. Along the way we swallowed a few bitter pills, collected the sum of a thousand mistakes and ultimately un-earthed an anthology of songs and a sound. We look out of the sunset still dreaming of a way out. We're older than when we were young and though we never did yet catch that train here's to hopin...
