Italian master, London based Stefano Ritteri takes centre stage for the latest edition of Shir Khan presents Black Jukebox — number 32 in this illustrious series. This one is a chiefly electro-flavoured affair, joining the dots between the genre’s past, present and future across four slick tracks — with a dash of garage at the end.

‘Slow Tripping’ is a homage to the charismatic boogie sound of the early ‘80s, resplendent with beautiful melancholic melody and a wistful air. As the name suggests, the lazy beat perfectly compliments the array of dreamy sounds, and there’s a definite nod to French disco/electro/hip-hop fusions of days gone by.

‘Donna’ is a collab with Mytron (Bordello A Parigi, Multi Culti)which continues the chuggy theme, its gently swaying synth arpeggios and unhurried beat recalling some of Soulwax’s more pared back material. Its simple arrangement is kept engrossing with synth automation and subtle atmospheric touches.

‘Brutesque’ strips things back to an almost minimalist approach, where twanging, monotone sounds slowly morph over a taut backbeat and a variety of bleeps and blips. With its spoken word sounds and Krautrock-ish mixture of sounds, it recalls the work of Public Service Broadcasting.

‘Robot Love’ takes its cues from the sweeter side of 2-step garage, bubbled down to a more laconic pace. Cute melodic refrains and big reverbs adorn the stuttering rhythm to make for a colourful, atmospheric, reflective track.

It's hard to believe DC Salas has yet to appear on Pets. A kindred spirit of Catz 'n Dogz, their paths have crossed many times and their sounds have crossed even more. Sharing a similar vision for deep, explorative, exciting and innovative house and techno, a release like this was only a matter of time.

Following big releases on Slowciety and Correspondant, Salas eases us into 2021 with four more wide-ranging cuts. 'Le Réveil' rings the alarm and wakes us up. An electrified maze of melodic layers and arpeggios, there's a great sense of mid 90s German house sounds that would eventually spill into the trance diaspora. Majestic, playful and crystal clean.

'Her Smile' takes us even deeper down the rabbit hole as acidic entrails weave in and out of the beats while more cosmic leads layer over the top. Reaching a great melodic crescendo mid-way, it's yet another great storytelling tune. And it's backed by two more late night delights: 'Another Chapter' takes us deeper and darker into the mix with a soaking wet, jelly-like bassline and big pads and chords that are reminiscent of Justin Martin or Ben Watt before 'The Morning Dance' brings us back home. Broken drums, clipped horn leads, a jacking spirit and an acid breakdown you could cook your breakfast eggs on. Good morning, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight. A release like this can be played at any time of day.

‘Aye Aye Mi Mi’ is the second single from Mano Le Tough’s new album, ‘At The Moment’ which is coming soon on Pampa Records; . The single really highlights the vocal & instrumental skills of the Irish producer, resulting in an indie dance ear-worm that’s hard to shake.

“It’s the only tune on the record that survived from my original batch of demos and sketches” says Mano. “It’s a kind of reflection on narcissism, social media saturation and the ego”.

NEAT return to Exploited with what might just be their strongest EP to date.

The title track features Swedish talent Storken, who has released on Running Back, and channels beautiful ‘80s Balearic vibes into its skippy house template. ‘80s electro bass funk leads the charge while wonky tape delays massage guitar chords and female vocal cuts into the distance. Bubbling synths subtly augment the central pillars of the track. The blissed-out breakdown makes for a stunning ambient / chillout interlude, allowing this glorious track to breathe and stretch out its arms.

‘What’s Up D?’ continues the retro theme, with diva house vocals cut up and set by turns against jaunty chime chords and a warped, nagging, pitch-bending synth hook. The ‘90s house percussion shuffles away with tinges of techno in its clap patterns and soft ride cymbals, while rubbery bass pulsates beneath. It’s a lean, punchy workout that flits between euphoria and heads-down intensity.

‘You Know What My Love’ rounds off the EP in beautiful style. The most gentle of the three tracks, its combination of stuttering vocal cut-ups, spine-tingling chord delays and succinct yet driving beat make for a dreamy experience. The breakdown is a stunning affair, where soaring pads float atop sensual melody and hypnotic FX, sunsets and lapping waves invoked by its heavenly sounds.
