A Salon des Amateurs family member, the man behind Aiwo Rec. has delivered a bewitching EP for Music from Memory sublabel Second Circle, proving that he is not only a master of breakbeat and rave, but also the keen commander of a very distinct 4th-World-meets-Industrial-German persuasion. There was something in the music, something which made sense. It pulsated and echoed between his hears, reverberating and bouncing with promise and intent. Is this the way it had always been? Was this what others had experienced and yet he had never been able to find? Now as he moved in time with the scattered drums, the wayward percussion and the bygone rhythm, he began to feel as one. 

Dan Curtin has been an ever present figure in electronic music, a producer whose music has been adored and collected over decades. His label, Metamorphic, is now back. A much loved imprint has been given a new lease of life and a new EP from Nico Lahs helps to set the scene. This one comes with high recommendations.

En el invierno de 2018, me comuniqué con el teclista / artista estadounidense Byron Blaylock, también conocido como Byron The Aquarius. Estaba convencido de que tenía todas las cualidades que podrían ser necesarias para crear un álbum innovador y después de algunas discusiones acordamos un plan maestro que se extendería durante aproximadamente 1 año y medio.

Durante un período de dos días, grabamos el álbum en Atlanta, Georgia a principios de 2020 en Patchwerk Studios. A medida que esta pandemia de virus actual se apoderó de muchas sociedades y paralizó el trabajo y la vida de muchas personas, también nos tomó por sorpresa, pero encontramos una manera de salvar el proceso de producción para continuar las sesiones de mezcla de las grabaciones de Byron. Usando una aplicación para compartir audio basada en la web, logramos mezclar todo el álbum de 3 ciudades diferentes de EE. UU. 

Chicago, donde tiene su sede el estudio e ingeniero Steve Kovacs, en Alabama, donde reside Byron, y en Miami, Florida, donde vivo. Para la ocasión, hice una instalación de alta fidelidad similar que se parecía a la que estaba usando el estudio en Chicago. En tiempo real, los tres escuchamos, editamos y mezclé todo el álbum hasta la satisfacción de Byron.

El álbum es una mezcla fantástica entre Soulful House y Jazz Music con un toque de Blues. Podría esperar que con cada músico en vivo con el que Byron se comprometiera resultara en algo diferente y este fue definitivamente el caso.

Por ejemplo, con el baterista veterano "Lil John" Roberts, las pistas de Byron se volvieron más sueltas, pero debido a que la técnica de "Lil John" es tan precisa, las pistas tienen una base firme en la que casi cualquier cosa sonaría genial. Con el trompetista Dashill Smith y la flautista Rasheeda Ali (ambos grabados en diferentes sesiones), en pistas graciosamente separadas para acomodar estos sonidos, casi como si estuvieran hechas especialmente para sus partes solistas. El bajista, Chocoalat, que inicialmente es de Brasil, le dio a las pistas una sensación de samba latina que fue maravillosamente inesperada.

Como productor, uno de mis objetivos era presentar al artista de la mejor manera posible. Asegurándose de que todas las pistas lleven su impronta, espíritu y diseño característicos ”. El objetivo general era crear algo que mostrara los rasgos y signos que llamarían la atención de un amante de la música. Alguien que se ha bailado en una relación con la música incondicional e innegable ”.
