Since the birth of the label in 1997, FatCat has always had a solid engagement with material sent to us as demos. Where numerous labels will throw demos straight into the trash unopened, at FatCat we've always made an effort to listen and reply to every demo received. Numerous FatCat artists have been picked up having been discovered in this way (including Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad, David Karsten Daniels, Welcome, Odonis Odonis, Get Back Guinozzi!, Silje Nes, Ensemble, Xinlisupreme, Songs Of Green Pheasant, Janek Schaefer - to name just a few), and it has always been really exciting to unexpectedly discover something great in this way. Just as when we started, this philosophy of keeping an ear to the ground and attempting to support good new creativity remains at the core of what we do.

With rapid changes in technology of recent years, the majority of demos are now sent to us electronically, but we are still happy to receive material through the post as CDs (please mark as 'demo submission' and mail FatCat Records, PO Box 3400, Brighton, BN1 4WG). Whilst we are still receiving a high quantity of demos, with our ever-busy release schedule and ongoing commitments to an expanding roster of signed artists, FatCat are now finding fewer opportunities to physically release material from new artists. As an antidote to this, back in 2004, we began using our website to showcase the best of the demos we were receiving. Alongside a DIY microsite built specifically to help people who wanted to release their own music, we hosted the our favourite demos online, with artwork and MP3s available for free download. In 2010 we began to use the more immediate freedom of SoundCloud as a platform - setting up a dropbox for people to submit tracks to and a player on the front of our site to showcase the best demo submissions. 

In February 2012, the new and improved FatCat demo site you are now using was launched, again using SoundCloud as the engine to drive the site. We have kept all of the the original demo artists on the new site - grouping them in collections archived by year. There is a lot of really great material stored away here, so please do spend some time looking around. 

The choices of who we have asked to join this archive are highly selective, and we make no apologies for this. These are tracks we consider to be really good quality material, tracks that we are happy to help promote and to have associated with FatCat. Luke Tuchscherer is an acclaimed singer/songwriter from Bedford, England
 
His introduction to the UK Americana scene came via the highly regarded alt.country band The Whybirds, with whom Luke sang and played drums.
 
The band released three studio albums (The Whybirds, 2008; Cold Blue Sky, 2010; A Little Blood, 2013), a live album and an EP. Their records attracted strong reviews from the British and international music press, including notices in Uncut (ALB - 7/10), Classic Rock (CBS 7/10), R2: Rock N Reel (ALB 4/5, LRv1 - 4/5, CBS 4/5), Maverick Country (CBS - 4/5), Daily Express (ALB - 4/5), Powerplay (ALB - 7/10) and Songwriting Magazine (ALB - 5/5).
 
In 2011, Luke and Suffolk-based producer Tom Peters (who worked with the ‘birds on Cold Blue Sky) went into the studio to start on what would become Luke’s debut solo record. Named You Get So Alone At Times That It Just Makes Sense – a title lovingly borrowed from Charles Bukowski – the album was released on 6 October 2014.
 
Upon release, the record garnered universal critical acclaim (see press for details). It was voted second best album of the year in Americana UK's reader's poll (while Luke was named second best male artist) and featured on multiple "Best of 2014" lists.
 
In August 2015, Luke signed a publishing deal with Southern Crossroads Music, and in March 2017, signed a record deal with Clubhouse Records.
 
His second album, Always Be True, was released through Clubhouse on 2 June 2017. The album again received universal critical acclaim, and reached #15 in the UK's Official Country Chart  and #25 in the Americana Chart.

The Whybirds are a three-piece rock 'n' roll band from Bedford, England. 

All three members (Dave Banks, Ben Haswell and Luke Tuchscherer) are singer/songwriters – giving the group a diverse range of songs and vocal styles – but without straying from The Whybirds' sanguine brand of rock 'n' roll. 

Classic Rock journalist Derek Oliver said: "The Whybirds have it all; songs, musicianship and a sense of maturity that most acts of this kind can’t even comprehend. I’ve lost count of the amount of times that Q, Uncut or Word magazine has banged on about alt.country artists to hear music that sounds like its been recorded in a bathroom by clueless embryonic singer/songwriters.

According to Americana UK, The Whybirds "...sound like Pearl Jam having a fist fight with The Allman Brothers in Don Henley’s back yard. But what’s more important is that The Whybirds might just be the hardest working and hardest rocking band in Britain right now – a band destined for greatness". 

The Whybirds release their eagerly awaited follow up to 2010’s critically acclaimed Cold Blue Sky (7/10 – Classic Rock, 4/5 – R2 Rock N Reel, 4/5 – Maverick Country) on 14 October 2013. 

Entitled A Little Blood, the album was produced by Nick Mailing and features single “The Cure”.
