Close your eyes and let the soundscape of chalak’At’sit envelope you in her emerald, verdant embrace. Layered embers of ethereal tones flicker, then quickly disappear across undulating waves of pirouetting idiophonic vibrations. Thus begins a psychedelic trip through exothermic rainforest-scapes and climaxes nestled in lush, majestic reverie.

Billowing indigo moods erupt into sumptuous, sidewinding derangements, then repose into gurgling, glacial meltwater.

Monologue

For RA.1000, DJ Sprinkles' first mix in over a decade is a powerful meditation on the genocide in Gaza.

Dance music often relies on simple narratives: release, escape, unity. But those narratives can often feel inadequate, and even at times, hollow. Or, as Terre Thaemlitz might bluntly put it, just "shitty."

For her first mix in around 15 years, Terre Thaemlitz AKA DJ Sprinkles, challenges us to think differently. "I felt this 1000th podcast should reflect the moment in which it was made," she told us in her Q&A.

And what is this moment? Every day since Israel's 2023 assault on Gaza began, an average of 28 children have been killed. That's an entire classroom, every day, for over 600 days (at the time of writing). It's a staggering figure that only captures a fragment of the listless cruelty imposed on the strip.

Faced with such a genocide, what can music really do? How political can it truly be?  For their RA.1000, Thaemlitz gives us an unflinching rebuke to the idea that music should provide escapism. The mix weaves ambient fragments and jazz passages, woven around samples from Israeli media and the voices of outspoken Jewish critics like Gabor Maté and Norman Finkelstein. 

The result is not just a protest, but a document of our time. For Terre Thaemlitz, music is never just music. Her RA.1000 serves as a reminder that in an age of relentless suffering, the most political act is to reject the illusion of escape, and search for something greater.

RA.1000 Terre Thaemlitz / DJ Sprinkles

ZamZam is proud to present a long-awaited 7” from Portland pillar Gulls AKA Jesse Munro Johnson.  Johnson is known the world over as label boss of Boomarm Nation, one of the jewels of underground Cascadian sound.  The Boomarm aesthetic is one of experimental brilliance, sound system music from outer worlds and inner dimensions, responsible for many heads’ first exposure to artists such as El Mahdy Jr and Iskeletor.  

A&R moves aside, some of the most unique and memorable moments in the Boomarm catalog are Gulls’ own.  In a scene full of copycats strong on presets but weak on voice, Johnson is a producer that has fully digested many influences to create a truly unique sound.  Deploying hardware, software, live instrumentation and desk-as-instrument, Gulls knows his history and the present moment but stays focused on manifesting his saturated, distorted out sound from way in.  

Water Creature is a 110 bpm beast of fuzzed bassline, panned toms, 80s claps, syncopated snares, shimmering, distorted synth melody and insistent rave-ish stabs. Dubbed & delayed guitar figures recall West Africa without resorting to ethnographic forgery or facile sampling.  An enveloping, mesmerizing, neck-snapping journey through shades of dancehall and dub techno that will demand replays, lingering in the psyche long after the runout groove.

On the flip Gulls delights as band leader of the Gulls Rhythm Force, a real-time ensemble of horns, percussion and electronics deployed in the service of the same simmering, shimmering Gulls aesthetic.  A steady 140 bpm 4/4 kick pulse anchors a hallucinogenic world of ghosting skanks, a static, hazy motif that feels like double and triple exposed silver-gelatin prints, clear images giving way to abstract grain. Mirage-like guitar, smearing trumpet and bubbling keys float in and out of focus, emerging from a haze of pink distortion and purple reverb, only to be subsumed in the thick atmospheres and overlapping echo trails once more.

Raised on a diet of  1970s Afrobeat, Jùjú music & genre-defying Black American pop, Ruoho's music draws upon the visceral aesthetics of dub, techno, garage & impractical melodic leitmotifs from experimental electro-acoustics, fusing them into imaginative new exhilarations, sometimes 4-on-the-floor, other times Avant-dubwise or ambient. His music has been described by some as “vaporous”, “aching and expansive” & “a wicked dub abstraction”.

Ruoho won an international BBC Radio 1 remix competition, reshaping Steve Reich's seminal piece “Music for 18 Musicians” & has released 12" vinyl records on numerous boutique labels like Unfulfillment (Montréal), Zero G Sounds (Boston), Thoughtless Music (Toronto), de'fchild productions (San Francisco), Adjunct Digital (Los Angeles), Skor Records (Los Angeles), Auralism (San Francisco) & Creaked Records (Switzerland). He has performed live at the Winter Music Conference (Miami), Decibel Festival (Seattle) as well as numerous underground venues across North America.
