John Rolodex - Vanquish [Premiere]

Lifestyle Music have been asserting themselves as one of the most game-changing independent imprints to come through in recent years. Their continuous stream of releases, as well as the platform that they’ve offered to newcomer artists, has enabled them to establish themselves alongside some of the drum & bass world’s most established labels. Their underground, finely polished cuts and the artists who’ve spent time in the studio creating them have ensured that they’re ahead of the game, pushing past their counterparts to pedestal music from across the spectrum of dance music that they’ve committed to. 

For their forthcoming release, they’ve brought duo Volatile Cycle into the fold; the second edition of their ‘Volatile Cycle & Friends’ EP delivers four cut-throat anthems which are sure to put both Volatile Cycle and their featuring artists into the clubsphere’s forefront. Vowel comes through first with the effortlessly-tech driven record ‘Dispersed’, pulled forward by his crashing drum sequences and swathes of clattering percussion. Volatile Cycle show their eye for indentifying upcoming talent through ‘Dispersed’, one more reason why they’ve become such a defining part of the Lifestyle Music roster. Wingz joins Volatile Cycle for ‘Time’s Up’, with its moody levels of bass and creeping atmospherics. An apt track for the darker months, ‘Time’s Up’ brings a brooding production standard and an intimidating technicality – the type which has become a standard for Lifestyle and their back catalogue. 

Long-time collaborator Barbarix jumps on board alongside Volatile Cycle for ‘Trauma’, a hectic journey which utilises crunching LFOs and gradually builds segment after segment. Then finally, London-based Philth offers up ‘Nowhere’, merging his minimalist, rolling style amongst Volatile Cycle’s chaotic signature. With four brand new tracks about to be released on Lifestyle, given a platform by an imperative part of their team, the label is entering the latter half of 2018 as strong as ever... another reason why they’re becoming tastemakers within the underground world of drum & bass.

M-Soul & S27 are both 27 years of age, they were born and raised in Sint-Niklaas and they love their drum and bass minimal and deep. You probably know this already, though. In the last 12 months they’ve delivered some straight up damagers on the likes of Vandal and Flexout. Prior to that they’ve featured on the likes of Proximity, Blendits, Halogen and Surfase. With clear dubby roots and occasional ventures towards the soulful and mellow, they’ve been repping the deeper side of Belgian D&B for almost eight years.

Coco Bryce steps up for LORE 006, setting the vibe instantly with the effortlessly anthemic tones of ‘Come 2 U’. Subdued chords and etheric vocals are draped over playful breaks and 808s in deadly style, one those rare tracks that will lift any dancefloor throughout the night! Dead Man’s Chest makes an appearance on ‘True Rebellion’ fusing ruffcut sample choppage with Coco’s riffs & melodies to roll out a hazy recollection of the raves of yesteryear.

Side B continues the theme with ‘Beats Like This’, a neon saturated breakbeat workout of whirling melodies, hardcore riffs & b-boy vocal chops. ‘Like Normal Death’ revisits Yaïr’s instrumental hiphop roots, signing off the EP with soaring pads, heavenly vox and a laid back crunch.

Law & Kola Nut - Somewhere New [Full Repertoire Vol 2 - Out Now]

The Inperspective Records founder finally commits an EP to his beloved label after his debut track “Wednesday Evening” appeared 15 years ago.  He dedicated his time to promoting and pushing the label, but a slew of releases on Fresh Trip, Immerse, Modern Urban Jazz, Cylon Recordings, Renegade, Exit Records and the recent upload of previously unreleased stuff on Spotify finally ignited his desire to get new music out again.  

Chris presents 4 tracks that some of the closest people in his life have chosen and insisted that he release.  Covering a myriad of styles, this release showcases the loves in Chris’s musical life.  

“Dragons In the World”, the title track, and a statement of intent, a purist Jazz break laden workout that is indicative of the Inperspective Sound.  It’s starts and never stops and showcases the most progressive side to his musical arsenal.  Inperspective stalwart Profane insisted that this tune should see the light of day, so here we are. 

“Clock Tower” was inspired by his trip to Croatia.  Having heard Caibire & Dbridge back to back at Hospitality on the beach. A inebriated Chris returned home, loaded up his laptop and this tune came out.  He played it the next day warming up with the Hospital Records crew and staff member Ed Priest suggested that the tune was release worthy, Diffrent Music & Med School manager Dexta echoed this sentiment.  The track harks back to an earlier version of Chris’s sound, a chunky half time monster. 

“Amber’s Bush” is an oldschool workout that happened quickly and fluidly.  Label family member Alex Jones enthusiastic response to it when played out told Chris that this should be on this EP.  A Smooth yet rugged roller that never stops once it starts. The bassline makes you think of whale sounds, put it that way!

“You Understand” is the result of a THC fuelled session with long time friend and fellow Black bespeckled jungalist, Will Miles.  It’s loopy, it’s rolling and it’s what many know his style to be. A fitting end to this most welcome return.
