Since 2014, Brighter Days has been a part of the rich tapestry of Amsterdam nightlife – a semi-regular party promoting positivity and inclusiveness run by resident DJs Kamma and Masalo. On the back of the platform provided by the party, the duo has notched up a string of memorable club and festival appearances, a regular Brighter Days show on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM, and a memorable Boiler Room set streamed live from Dekmantel Festival.

Now Kamma and Masalo have taken the next step and curated a Brighter Days compilation for Rush Hour, a collection that does a terrific job in offering up slept-on and unreleased gems – including a clutch of their own tried-and-tested re-edits – while also accurately representing the sound, style and ethos of the event that inspired it.

Like Kamma and Masalo’s event, which invariably takes place in intimate dancing spaces in Amsterdam, the Brighter Days compilation offers up an open-minded, club-friendly soundtrack that joins the dots between crate-digging obscurities from the recent and distant past, fresh cuts, ‘secret weapons’ and previously unreleased music from young, local producers who have become regular faces on Brighter Days dancefloors.

Across nine tracks, Kamma and Masalo deliver an enticing blend of tactile and colourful house, disco, basement-ready throb-jobs, inspired dancefloor dubs and righteous boogie jams, some of which are appearing on vinyl for the very first time (see Haroumi Hosono and Yasuhiko’s ‘Turquois’, an exceedingly rare, CD-only chunk of deep, throbbing tribal house intoxication).

There are highlights everywhere you look, from the piano-house rush of the ‘Subterranean Mix Edit’ of S’Xpress’s overlooked 1990 single ‘Nothing To Lose’ and the South African Kwaito-boogie brilliance of Cisco The Champ’s ‘Move On’, to the Italo-disco excellence of Hugh Bullen’s ‘Alisand’, and Mr Fingers’ jacking 1988 remix of ‘We’re Gonna Work It Out’ by fellow Chicagoan house producers North/Clybourn.

Kamma and Masalo’s remixing and re-editing skills are put in the spotlight, too. There’s the edit of Discotheque’s 1982 Dutch-Belgian disco classic ‘For Your Love’ and a previously unreleased ‘dub’ edit of French-Cameroonian artist Anyzette’s 1984 gem ‘Baladoun’, a low-slung slice of drum machine-rich body music that blurs the boundaries between Italo-disco, Afro-boogie and proto-techno.

Completing the package are two cuts that demonstrate the duo’s love of showcasing tracks by young and little-known Dutch producers. Peffa’s ‘Routine’, an immersive and emotive treat that blends elements of deep house and Detroit techno, is just one of numerous unreleased tracks by the producer that Kamma and Masalo has been showcasing in their sets in recent years, while Desmon – whose ‘Submerge’ is a woozy, off-beat deep house treat – has been a regular on Brighter Days dancefloors since the start. It’s a fitting nod to what makes Brighter days special: a close-knit community of dancers and inspired, lesser-known music old and new.

'An exciting member of the current crop of Dutch house talents, yet an artist with an endless list of co-signs from house legends - including Kerri Chandler and Louie Vega - Amsterdam-based DJ/producer Dennis Quin is adding the title of label boss to his resumé as he begins to uncover his major project for 2023, DQ Music. A vinyl-first imprint set to showcase his rich and diverse house sound, building on releases via Defected and Madhouse through to labels such as PIV and Dungeon Meat, the label is launched in style this April with a very special production with deep ties to his home country’s electronic scene, ‘The Gryphon’ - with further key projects on the label to be revealed later this year.
With roots dating back to the Gaultier Modern Dance Parties of the early 90s with regular guests including Carl Craig and Laurent Garnier, it was 1991’s ‘De Dance Krant Awards’ where Dimitri Kneppers and Eric Nouhan’s bootleg ‘The Gryphon’ as Alice D. In Wonderland first surfaced, sending those in attendance into raptures. Discovered 25 years later by Quin after tracking down footage of the night, continuously playing the two-minute section captured on repeat before being unable to find the track’s ID, the Dutchman got in contact with Dmitri to discover that the original DAT tape was lost and that footage was the last remnants of the production. It was then that Quin set about to recreate the production, and after interpreting the track and its rave sound in his own way, he reconnected with the original artists to uncover his take on the record.
“The crowd reaction after playing it was insane! I decided to give Dimitri a copy, and he instantly loved it. He said, ‘Thank you for making this amazing interpretation of the track; it’s amazing that I can play it after more than 30 years!’. He gave me the contact details of Eric, and he was willing to release it featuring Alice D. In Wonderland.” - Dennis Quin.
Alongside the heavy-hitting, energy-charged, rave-drenched title cut ‘The Gryphon’, with Quin’s tight drum programming on full display, the other three tracks on the package explore a wide-reaching range of sounds and styles. ‘Right On’ is an energetic, vocal-driven house cut combining warm chords and punchy bass stabs, while Quin’s reconstruction of ‘Tournesol’ - another production of Nouhan’s - is a deep dive into entrancing spheres available as an exclusive only available for vinyl purchasers. To close, the package is wrapped up by the jacking and snaking sonics of the second original and slick B2 cut, ‘Fame To Blame’.'

On ‘Minor fools’, Dam Swindle go into classic US house mode. Shuffling hats and bouncy bass lay the foundation for some crunchy jazz chords (think Underground Resistance, with a Swindle touch. The track keeps building up tension with haunting organs, looped vocals, and modulated keys. Add to that a bouncy synth section at the heart of the track and you’ve got a jam that slaps hard.

Deeply immersed in the ocean life & natural beauty of his home base on the Hawaiian Islands,  seasoned producer Marasco resurfaces with the NEED EP for Nordic Trax. Includes a remix from Summer (Brendon Collins). 

A veteran deejay, Marasco began his production journey over a decade ago and first caught our 
attention for his work with prolific producer Tuccillo (King St, Freerange, etc). Their collaboration on the Hawabiza Project gave birth to a more classic house sound and delivered stand-out releases for Seamless Recordings & CityDeep Music. 

Marasco's long connection with the US West Coast and producers like Halo (H-Foundation) opened doors in the house community. Soon his solo productions & remixes appeared on Underground Collective, the legendary Siesta Records, Bulletdodge, Iside, Ocean Trax, Orion Muzik and Halo's Surface Recordings, which included a remix by house heavyweight DJ Sneak. 

Combining his classic sound with more modern textures, Marasco is fully-focused on production these days. Occasionally taking breaks from the studio to deejay, he has toured Germany, Spain / Ibiza, Thailand, the US (including appearances at DEMF and WMC), and recently made his debut at BPM Festival in Playa Del Carmen Mexico.
